Autofluorescence imaging-assisted medical thoracoscopy in the diagnosis of malignant pleural disease.

BACKGROUND: Medical thoracoscopy (MT) does not always provide a conclusive diagnosis of pleural diseases because the endoscopic appearance of pleural diseases can be misleading. Autofluorescence imaging (AFI) is an effective assistive diagnostic tool. However, its clinical application for pleural disease remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: This prospective study evaluated the clinical usefulness of AFI-assisted MT for diagnosis of malignant pleural diseases. METHODS: Patients with unexplained pleural effusion admitted to our clinics between December 2018 and September 2021 were enrolled. We p

DNA image cytometry ploidy analysis technique improves the detection rate of pleural effusion cytology.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical diagnostic value of DNA image cytometry (DNA-ICM) ploidy analysis in malignant pleural effusion cancer screening, this study analyzed the effect of exfoliated cell smears (ECSs), cell blocks (CBs), and immunochemistry. METHOD: A total of 830 cases of pleural effusion were considered for the DNA-ICM ploidy analysis. The ECSs were centrifuged, the CBs were formed, and the DNA-ICM ploidy analysis was carried out in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion. Immunochemistry and biopsy was applied to differentiate between benign and malignant pleural effusion a

Malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare diseases of the thoracic cavity. They frequently grow unnoticed until they exert compressive effects on adjacent organs. Treatment of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura is surgical resection. Post-operative surveillance is recommended to identify early recurrent disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of a 76-year-old female patient with no previous pulmonary history who presented with progressive dyspnea, fatigue, and involuntary weight loss. On chest X-ray and computed chest tomography scan, she was found to have a 16.

Report of a Non-Hodgkin lymphoma case presenting with pleural effusion.

Initial presentation of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) as primary pleural lymphoma is extremely rare. We report a case with NHL, who was initially presented with pleural effusion and pleural thickening. Our patients at first received intensive treatment of broad spectrum antibiotics for 10 days with no change in the clinical status, and then were diagnosed with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma with the examination of pleural fluid by using cytologic and flow cytometric methods, and treated with LMT89 group B treatment protocol. Our case points out the necessity for considering the NHL within the different

[Combined endoscopic treatment of malignant tumorous lesions of the pleura accompanied with exudative pleurisy].

The article is devoted to a combined method of treatment of malignant tumorous lesions of the pleura accompanied by exudative pleurisy. The main result of using the method is cytoreduction, discontinuation of exudation and loss of protein, reduction of inflammation, intoxication and pain syndrome. It results from argonoplasmic electocoagulation of the pleura followed by photodynamic therapy. The treatment was used in 10 patients with a palliative aim. In all cases persistent discontinuation of the accumulation of pleural exudates was obtained that was confirmed by better state of the patient,

[Primary pleural non-Hodgkin's lymphoma without chronic pyothorax].

Most cases of primary pleural malignant lymphoma develop following chronic pyothorax. We report a case of primary pleural non-Hodgkin's lymphoma without chronic pyothorax. A 63-year-old woman was referred and admitted to our hospital with a right pleural effusion that was detected during a routine physical checkup. Her liver, spleen, and superficial lymph nodes were not palpable on physical examination. The massive right pleural effusion and a pleural mass were demonstrated on chest X-ray films and thoracic computed tomograms. Diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed by needle

[Sonography of the diaphragmatic pleura in tumor patients].

Report on twelve patients suffering from malignant primary disease associated with pleural effusion and diaphragmatic metastasis, basically diagnosed via sonography. In no case tumour formation could be detected by x-ray film. Cytohistological evidence of diaphragmal metastasis can be found by sonographically detected pleural tumours malignant effusion must be assumed, despite negative exudate cytology. In such cases diagnostic thoracoscopy is not necessary.

[Value of the assay of pleural carcinoembryonic antigen for the diagnosis of neoplastic pleurisy. Correlation with plasma levels and anatomopathological results].

The authors specify the contribution of pleural carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assay in the diagnosis of malignant pleuritis by comparing it to plasma concentrations and pathologic findings. 45 patients with pleuritis were studied. Etiology was malignant in 15 and non-malignant in 27. Analysis of results shows that a pleural CEA concentration above 5 ng/ml is very suggestive of malignancy. Determination of the pleural CEA/plasmatic CEA ratio provides no additional information compared to pleural CEA assay alone.

Preclinical Efficacy and Proteomic Prediction of Molecular Targets for s-cal14.1b and s-cal14.2b Conotoxins with Antitumor Capacity in Xenografts of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm with increasing incidence and mortality rates. Although recent advances have improved the overall prognosis, they have not had an important impact on survival of patients with MPM, such that more effective treatments are needed. Some species of marine snails have been demonstrated to be potential sources of novel anticancer molecules. This study analyzed the anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo of two peptides found in C. californicus. The effects of s-cal14.1b and s-cal14.2b on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cytotoxicity were eval

Thoracic solitary fibrous tumors with small cell features: A clinicopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of 5 cases.

Five cases of thoracic solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) with small cell features are presented mimicking a neuroendocrine neoplasm. The patients were four men and one woman aged 43 to 74 years who presented with symptoms of chest pain, cough, dyspnea or hemoptysis. Two tumors were intrapulmonary neoplasms, while three were pleural-based. Grossly, the tumors ranged in size from 4 to 6 cm and were white and solid; in two tumors necrosis was apparent. Histologically, they were characterized by a cellular proliferation composed of small cells with round nuclei and inconspicuous nucleoli. The cellular

Anaplastic large cell T-cell lymphoma: insights from cytological and immunological profiles across ten diverse cases.

While the latest WHO classification of hematological neoplasms helps refine the diagnostic criteria for anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCL), their diagnosis can still be challenging. This retrospective series of 10 ALCL cases illustrates the cytological appearance and immunological profile obtained through flow cytometry (FCM) from various sample types, including lymph node biopsies (LN), peripheral blood (PB), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and pleural fluid (PF). ALCL exhibits a polymorphic cytological appearance, ranging from "doughnut" cells to Hodgkin-like cells, very large cells, and smal

Benign Spindle Cell Lesion of the Nasal Cavity: A Rare Presentation of Solitary Fibrous Tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms primarily found in the pleural region but have been documented in diverse extrapleural sites, including the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, albeit infrequently. Here, we present a case of a 48-year-old female who presented with a right-sided nasal mass and associated ophthalmologic symptoms, ultimately diagnosed with a benign spindle cell lesion localized to the nasal cavity. The patient underwent a comprehensive evaluation involving clinical examination, radiological imaging, and histopathological analysis, leading to the identification of

Bladder Leiomyoma with Synchronous Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura.

Bladder leiomyomas (BLs) are extremely rare benign tumors of mesenchymal origin. The exact pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to their appearance remain unclear including hormonal disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, and fetal remnants in the bladder. They usually remain asymptomatic for a long period of time. Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are also rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with malignant potential usually affecting the pleura. The pathogenesis of SFTs remains unclear. We report the case of a 28-year-old male presenting with SFT of the pleura and synchronous BL. The patient p

Gamma/delta T cell lymphoma presenting in the subcutaneous tissue and small intestine in a patient with capillary leak syndrome.

Peripheral T cell neoplasms originating from gamma/delta T cells are rarely reported, despite the development of hepatosplenic lymphoma from gamma/delta T cells. We report a case of multiple generated gamma/delta T cell lymphomas presenting in the subcutaneous tissue and small intestine in a patient with accompanying capillary leak syndrome. The patient, a 43-year-old male presented with remarkable systemic edema, pleural effusion, and ascites. Widespread tumors were evident in the subcutaneous tissue and in the small intestine. A biopsy revealed anaplastic large cell lymphoma in these lesions

[Pulmonary embolism in malignancy of the lung: a retrospective clinical evaluation and pathomorphologic personal material].

The incidence and clinical significance of pulmonary embolism (PE) in pulmonary malignancy were analysed among 111 autopsy cases including: 65 primary and 24 metastatic lung cancer, 8 hematological malignancies and 14-malignant pleural mesothelioma. In 34 (31%) cases PE was found, in 4 (12%) patients cancer tissue emboli was documented. In nonsmall cell lung cancer the frequency of PE was 40%, compared to 24% in small cell, 25% in metastatic lung cancer and 14% in mesothelioma. Deep venous thrombosis of lower extremities was the source of thrombotic material in 35% cases. In remaining cases th

Massive chest wall resection and reconstruction for malignant disease.

OBJECTIVE: Malignant chest wall tumors are rare neoplasms. Resection with wide-free margins is an important prognostic factor, and massive chest wall resection and reconstruction are often necessary. A recent case series of 20 consecutive patients is reported in order to find any possible correlation between tumor histology, extent of resection, type of reconstruction, and adjuvant treatment with short- and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Twenty patients were submitted to chest wall resection and reconstruction for malignant chest wall neoplasms between 2006 and 2014. The mean age (ten males) wa

Pleural fluid pH: diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic value.

Measurement of pleural fluid pH has diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic implications in exudative pleural effusions (Table II). A parapneumonic effusion with a pleural fluid pH below 7.2 indicates an empyema is forming which necessitates chest tube drainage in all patients, whereas a pleural fluid pH over 7.3 does not require drainage. If the pH of a parapneumonic effusion is 7.2 to 7.3, serial pleural fluid pH measurements with clinical observation will help to determine the need for chest tube drainage. A pleural fluid glucose level of below 60 mg/dl and a lactic dehydrogenase level over

The role of concurrent determinations of pleural fluid and tissue carcinoembryonic antigen in the distinction of malignant mesothelioma from metastatic pleural malignancies.

A combined determination of pleural fluid and tissue carcinoembryonic antigen (PF-CEA and T-CEA) by radioimmunoassay and immunoperoxidase staining technique respectively was performed in patients with malignant mesotheliomas (12), metastatic pleural carcinomas (17) and benign pleural diseases (seven). All PF-CEA-positive (greater than 39 ng/ml) cases were T-CEA-positive metastatic carcinomas. In contrast, 4/30 PF-CEA-negative (less than 39 ng/ml) cases were T-CEA-positive metastatic carcinomas (three cases) and idiopathic pleuritis (one case). These results suggest that CEA, though present in
