"Pharming": the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in teens.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prescription and over-the-counter cough and cold medication abuse is rapidly becoming a national health concern for adolescents. Increased awareness of this growing epidemic is essential toward diagnosing, treating and preventing this type of substance abuse. RECENT FINDINGS: Data from surveys and poison control center records demonstrate an increased nonmedical use of prescription and over-the-counter cough and cold preparations, particularly those containing dextromethorphan. The nonmedical use of prescription medications may result in serious clinical effects with potent

Acute toxicity profile of tolperisone in overdose: Observational poison centre-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Tolperisone is a centrally acting muscle relaxant that acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels. There is a lack of information on the clinical features of tolperisone poisoning in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographics, circumstances and clinical features of acute overdoses with tolperisone. METHODS: An observational study of acute overdoses of tolperisone, either alone or in combination with one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in a dose range not expected to cause central nervous system effects, in adults and children (

Balanced CO/OH Intermediates for Efficient and CO-Resilient Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation via Pt Supported on La-Doped α-MoC.

The electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) over Pt-based catalysts is critical for renewable energy applications. However, its performance is often hampered by CO poisoning and the inefficient utilization of active sites. Regulating the kinetic balance of the CO and OH intermediates through microenvironmental control has emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate these limitations. Here, we present a Pt catalyst supported on lanthanum-doped molybdenum carbide (La-MoC), which leverages the exceptional water-dissociation capability of α-MoC to supply abundant OH species, while prec

Injury prevention content in social media posts by Children's hospitals: a missed opportunity for education and advocacy.

BACKGROUND: Preventable injuries are the leading cause of pediatric death. Most healthcare organizations and the general public engage in social media (SoMe) to disseminate and consume health-related information. It is unknown how frequently pediatric hospitals leverage their SoMe platforms to educate on injury prevention (IP) topics. We sought to better characterize SoMe messaging and IP content by children's hospitals. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of US children's hospitals' primary SoMe Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram accounts. Included hospitals were associat

A cluster of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) poisonings following insufflation of a white powder sold as cocaine.

OBJECTIVE: Adulteration, substitution or contamination of illicit substances can have clinically significant implications when other illicit substances are included. Such circumstances can present as clusters of poisonings, including severe toxicity and death following exposure to unexpected illicit substances. We report a cluster of laboratory-confirmed lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in a powder that was sold as cocaine and used recreationally. METHODS: The Prescription, Recreational and Illicit Substance Evaluation (PRISE) program established by the New South Wales Ministry of Health incl

Acute renal failure in dogs after the ingestion of grapes or raisins: a retrospective evaluation of 43 dogs (1992-2002).

A review of records from the AnTox database of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Poison Control Center identified 43 dogs that developed increased blood urea nitrogen concentration, serum creatinine concentration, or both as well as clinical signs after ingesting grapes, raisins, or both. Clinical findings, laboratory findings, histopathological findings, treatments performed, and outcome were evaluated. All dogs vomited, and lethargy, anorexia, and diarrhea were other common clinical signs. Decreased urine output, ataxia, or weakness were associated with a n

Ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen toxicosis and treatment in dogs and cats.

Toxicosis to 3 commonly available analgesics--ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen--occurs in dogs and cats after acute ingestion or repetitive administration of therapeutic or excessive doses. Whereas in acute exposure, where the clinical course of an overdose to all 3 drugs is predictable in relation to the amount ingested, in chronic exposure to therapeutic doses of aspirin and ibuprofen, the development of gastric ulcers and analgesic nephropathy is unpredictable. Ibuprofen is not recommended for prolonged treatment in dogs and cats due to the likelihood of ulcer formation. Although gastri

Distribution and expression of toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 gene among Staphylococcus aureus isolates of toxic shock syndrome and non-toxic shock syndrome origin.

Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of TSS. TSST-1 production is subject to physiologic and environmental constraints. Thus, DNA probes that detect the chromosomal gene encoding the toxin are of value diagnostically, epidemiologically, and for studies of gene expression. Several synthetic oligonucleotide probes complementary to two regions of the TSST-1 gene were used to ascertain the presence of this gene in the chromosomal DNA of 261 strains of S. aureus from various TSS-related and non-TSS-related sources. Isolates were from clinically confirm
