Clinical cross-reactivity between Artemisia vulgaris and Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile).

Artemisia vulgaris is a common weed and an important source of allergens on the subtropical island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. It pollinates mainly from July to September, although, due to some local climatic conditions, it may flower throughout the year. Cross-reactivity with hazelnut, kiwi, birch, several Compositae (Ambrosia, Chrysanthemum, Matricaria, Solidago) and grass allergens has been suggested. Few studies have addressed the issue of in vivo cross-reactivity between A. vulgaris and Matricaria chamomilla. The objective of this study was to perform conjunctival and bronchial ch

Species-associated toxicological trajectories in social bees exposed to sublethal metribuzin: A multi-omics perspective on host-microbiome interactions.

The divergent sensitivities of honeybees (Apis mellifera) and bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) to agrochemicals challenge the one-species-fits-all framework of ecological risk assessment, yet the mechanistic basis for this variation remains underexplored. Here, we used an integrated multi-omic approach, combining transcriptomics, metabolomics, and gut metagenomics, to map the species-associated responses of these pollinators under sublethal metribuzin (MET) exposure (30 mg/kg). Honeybees, exhibited broad transcriptional activation accompanied by suppressed P450 and glutathione S-transferase (GST

Genetic Evaluation and Selection of Growth Traits of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis Half-Sib Families.

Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis is a major commercial conifer in subtropical Yunnan, China, yet systematic genetic evaluation of its breeding populations remains scarce. We estimated genetic parameters for growth and stem form (SF) traits to support advanced-generation selection. In a progeny trial of 113 open-pollinated half-sib families established in 2013 at Pu'er, 2201 surviving trees were assessed at age 11 for height, diameter at breast height (DBH), stem volume, height to crown base (HCB), crown width, and an ordinal SF score. Variance components and breeding values (BVs) were estimated

Herd immunity underlies homologous recombination in stationary phase bacteria.

Homologous recombination is ubiquitous across evolution, generating variation through genetic reshuffling. Although bacteria lack meiotic recombination, homologous recombination has been known to extensively shape their genomes. However, the mechanisms and ecological conditions sustaining frequent recombination in bacteria remain unclear. Using an Escherichia coli - P1 phage model system, we reveal how frequent recombination emerges from CRISPR-based herd immunity to a generalized transducing phage (DNA vector). Herd immunity maintains phage-susceptible donor bacteria, recipient immune bacteri

BEEHAVEecoGUTS - a new module for mechanistic predictions of lethal effects in honey bee colonies.

Honey bees are important pollinators of wild and cultivated plants. They are therefore a key species in the environmental risk assessment of plant protection products in the European Union. As empirical assessments of effects on honey bees on field and landscape level are challenging, mechanistic modelling offers a powerful complement. Such models can predict exposure and effects in the field and are therefore increasingly accepted within the regulatory framework. The BEEHAVEecotox model is a model which links exposure to colony effects in a mechanistic manner. It uses standard regulatory data

Spatiotemporal infestation patterns of Aceria litchii Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) in a lychee orchard in South Florida.

The lychee erinose mite (LEM), Aceria litchii, is an invasive eriophyoid mite posing notable risks to lychee (Litchi chinensis) production worldwide. First detected in Florida’s Lee County in 2018, LEM has since spread to all lychee producing counties in the state. This study investigated LEM’s dispersal dynamics following its initial detection in a lychee orchard in Homestead, Florida. A total of 190 lychee trees (‘Brewster’, ‘Mauritius’, and ‘Sweetheart’ cultivars) were monitored bi-weekly to detect new infestations and determine the LEM spread within the orchard and in the canopy of each tr

Effects of Glyphosate and High-Temperature Stress on Queen Larvae of the Honey Bee (Apis cerana cerana).

Against the backdrop of agricultural intensification and climate change, bee colonies are increasingly exposed to both agrochemical residues and extreme temperatures, posing a growing threat to their survival. Glyphosate (GLY), one of the most widely used herbicides worldwide, and high temperature are two major environmental stressors associated with pollinator decline. However, their combined effects on queen larvae remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined the individual and combined effects of sublethal GLY exposure and 40 °C heat stress on queen larvae of the honey bee Apis cera

Effects of a formulation of the veterinary drug moxidectin on the performance of a plant-insect food chain.

The increasing use of veterinary anthelmintics, which mainly enter the environment via livestock feces, raises concerns about side effects on non-target organisms in agricultural landscapes. While most studies have focused on species at a single trophic level that are directly exposed to these drugs, little is known about their indirect effects on interacting species across trophic levels and the associated ecological functions. To address this research gap, we conducted the first experimental study on a terrestrial species assemblage exposed to soil spiked with a formulation of the commonly u

Characterization and expression analysis of UBC gene family provide insights into the potential roles in pigment biosynthesis in pepper fruit.

BACKGROUND: Ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (UBCs) are a critical part of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and play diverse roles in growth, development, and abiotic stress responses in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Although UBC genes have been reported in several plant species, genome-wide characterization of this gene family remains unexplored in pepper. RESULTS: In this study, 56 putative CaUBCs were identified in pepper, which were clustered into 11 groups based on phylogenetic analysis, including ubiquitin E2 enzyme variant (UEV), SOMO (HUS), and COP10. CaUBCs within each subgroup showed re

Mad honey poisoning in Nepal: ecology, epidemiology, and clinical spectrum of grayanotoxin intoxication (2009-2026).

Wild honey from the Himalayan cliff bee Apis laboriosa, commonly known as mad honey, has been consumed across Nepal's mid-Himalayan belt for centuries for its perceived medicinal and psychoactive properties, yet its capacity to cause grayanotoxin poisoning has never been systematically documented. The bee forages on Rhododendron species whose nectar contains grayanotoxins, which become concentrated in the honey it produces. We reviewed 27 publications describing approximately 68 cases of grayanotoxin poisoning spanning five decades, situating the clinical epidemiology within the ecological fra

Exploring oxidative stress and epigenetic biomarkers in bees: insights into health effects of air pollution and diet - a pilot study.

Bees are vulnerable to environmental pollution, including toxic emissions from fire events, which can impact oxidative balance. This study was conducted as a pilot investigation with a relatively limited sample size and aimed to assess the levels of specific biomarkers [8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoGuo), 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NO₂Tyr), and 5-methylcytidine (5-MeCyt)] by HPLC‒MS/MS analysis in bees sampled before (May) and after (June) a landfill fire. The bees were divided into three groups: untreated (control), suppleme

Varroa mite resistance in a hybrid honey bee (Apis mellifera) population in Southern California.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are important ecological and agricultural pollinators. In the United States, beekeepers experience substantial annual colony losses, largely driven by parasites such as the mite Varroa destructor. We studied a Californian hybrid honey bee population in Southern California, a genetic mix of Western European, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and African lineages. We predicted that these bees would show lower mite infestation levels because they survive and persist without human intervention. To test this, we monitored 236 colonies over a four-year period. We found th

New generation of QSAR modeling for bee safety: predicting toxicity using graph neural networks and apistox data.

Accurate prediction of chemical toxicity is essential for environmental risk assessment and the protection of non-target organisms, such as pollinators. In this study, a Graph Neural Network (GNN) was employed to model the toxicity of organic compounds to bees, using molecular graphs derived from SMILES strings. The model achieved an average AUC-ROC of 0.76 on the test set and 0.97 on the training set, with low standard deviations (± 0.03), indicating consistent performance across cross-validation folds. The combined ROC curve of all test folds yielded an overall AUC-ROC of 0.802, demonstratin

Advances in the Evolutionary Mechanisms and Genomic Studies of Sexual Differentiation in Lauraceae Plants.

The Lauraceae family, a keystone group in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest ecosystems, exhibits exceptional diversity in sexual systems (including hermaphroditic flowers, functionally unisexual flowers, and pseudo-dioecy), serving as a natural model for studying plant sexual differentiation mechanisms. This review synthesizes advances in the evolutionary mechanisms and genomic studies of sexual differentiation in Lauraceae, focusing on three key areas: (1) the evolution of taxonomic classification and floral morphology, (2) molecular trajectories of sexual differentiation, and (3) cha

Greater difference between airborne and flower pollen chemistry, than between pollen collected across a pollution gradient in the Netherlands.

The prevalence in allergic diseases has increased considerably in the past decades. An important trigger of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is the pollen of wind-pollinating plants. This pollen is developed by plants and is released into the air where it gets exposed to environmental influences and air pollution. We investigated the chemical changes to pollen that occur after release from the flower in a rural (Veluwe) and an urban (Amsterdam) site in the Netherlands using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. During the spring/summer of 2020 (during the COVID pandemic)

Confirmed Grayanotoxin Poisoning with Bradycardia from a Gift of Imported Honey.

BACKGROUND: Human grayanotoxin poisoning is distinctly uncommon in North America, as the predominant source of human exposure is honey made by bees pollinating rhododendron species in the Mediterranean. We present a case of confirmed grayanotoxin poisoning from honey imported from Turkey. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old man developed nausea, lightheadedness, and lost consciousness. Onset was 30 min after the ingestion of honey that was brought to the United States from Turkey. Emergency medical services found him bradycardic, hypotensive, and unresponsive. He was treated with atropine, saline, and

Neonicotinoids: mechanisms of systemic toxicity based on oxidative stress-mitochondrial damage.

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used pesticides in the world. However, research studies have shown that it can affect the cognitive abilities and health of non-target bees and other wild pollinators by inducing DNA damage, apoptosis and mitochondrial damage, injure to its central nervous system, and it is even developmentally neurotoxic to mammals and humans, with mitochondria being an important target of neonicotinoids. Therefore, this article reviews the role of mitochondrial morphology, calcium ions (Ca2+) homeostasis, respiratory function, apoptosis, and DNA damage in neonicotinoids-ind

Wild Bee Exposure to Pesticides in Conservation Grasslands Increases along an Agricultural Gradient: A Tale of Two Sample Types.

Conservation efforts have been implemented in agroecosystems to enhance pollinator diversity by creating grassland habitat, but little is known about the exposure of bees to pesticides while foraging in these grassland fields. Pesticide exposure was assessed in 24 conservation grassland fields along an agricultural gradient at two time points (July and August) using silicone band passive samplers (nonlethal) and bee tissues (lethal). Overall, 46 pesticides were detected including 9 herbicides, 19 insecticides, 17 fungicides, and a plant growth regulator. For the bands, there were more frequent
