Colloidal stability and aggregation of polyethylene (PE) nanoplastics under UV weathering and PFOA contamination.

The colloidal stability of polyethylene nanoplastics (PE NPs) impacts their environmental fate. UV weathering and pollutant adsorption modify the surface of nanoparticles, alter particle-particle interactions and, in turn, modulate their colloidal stability. This study reports on the colloidal stability of 200 nm PE NPs as a function of salt concentration and surface treatment. Colloidal stability is determined for the as made particles, after UV weathering, and in the presence of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). Aggregation kinetics is determined using dynamic light scattering and zeta potential

Lipid Headgroup Hydration Regulates Distinct Remodeling of the Membrane Interface by Polyethylene Glycol and Dextran.

Water-soluble polymers commonly interact with cell membranes, but their interactions are poorly understood. Here, we investigate polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX) interactions with different model lipid membranes. Using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, we observe that PEG and DEX trigger strikingly different membrane responses - DEX induces extensive membrane remodeling, including localized multilamellar domain formation, while PEG does not. Combining fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence anisotropy, and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy, we show that DEX per

From Melt Miscibility to Crystallization: Rheological and Thermal Analysis of Polyethylene Blends for Recycling Applications.

Plastic waste management remains a major challenge, and the mechanical recycling of polyethylene (PE) is complicated by the coexistence of HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE grades that are difficult to separate. This review critically examines the miscibility, apparent miscibility, compatibility, and crystallization behavior of PE blends, with an emphasis on linear viscoelastic rheology and thermal analysis. Rheological criteria, including additivity, Cole-Cole, time-temperature superposition, Han, and van Gurp-Palmen analyses, were evaluated, together with DSC and successive self-nucleation and annealing

Highly Efficient Recycling of Polyethylene Glycol With Benzaldehyde Over OH-Functionalized Ionic Liquid.

The chemical recycling and utilization of plastic waste and its transformation into value-added chemicals are of great significance for sustainable development and have broad research prospects. Herein, we report a green, simple, mild, metal-free and efficient strategy to obtain oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds by inducing the cleavage of the C-O and O-H bonds of polyethylene glycol (PEG) through the hydrogen bonds (HBs) of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs). Through experiments and theoretical calculations, it is found that the anion and cation of IL could respectively activa

Selective Upcycling of Waste Polyethylene into Propane Facilitated by the Undulation Confinement Effect in Zeolite Channels.

Selective conversion of polyethylene (PE) into high-value bulk chemicals holds significant industrial application value. However, the uniform C-C bonds in the PE main chain render directed cleavage a formidable challenge. Here we developed a channel undulation-confinement hydrocracking (CUCH) strategy, achieving selectivity of propane up to 70.2% from PE conversion using a ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst. This selective conversion process originates from the deep β-scission of C-C bonds and the match of propane molecular size with the channel undulation factor (Ω = 0.71) of ZSM-5. Reaction kinetics ana

Polyethylene microplastics as emerging reproductive toxicants: Evidence from an oocyte-based mammalian model.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants detected in biological fluids, including blood and follicular fluid, raising concern about their potential effects on mammalian reproduction. The present study investigated whether polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs; 10-30 μm), at concentrations reported in vivo, affect bovine oocyte maturation and subsequent embryonic development. Bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured in vitro for 24 h in the presence of 0, 0.025, 0.5, or 1.5 μg/mL PE-MPs. Nuclear maturation, mitochondrial distribution, mitochondrial content, mitochondrial mem

Polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene microplastic bioaccumulation in human blood and cancerous tissues in Algerian cases.

Due to poor waste management and excessive plastic consumption, Algeria faces an escalating concern over plastic pollution, particularly microplastics (MPs). This pioneering study provides the first baseline assessment of MPs in human biological samples from Jijel Province, Algeria. MPs were detected and characterized in blood samples and cancer tissues (breast, colon, and rectal) using organic digestion, density separation, and filtration. More than 220 MPs (100-200 µm) were identified in cancer tissues, averaging 25 particles/gram. Blood samples contained 172 MPs (50-300 µm), averaging 3 par

Widespread detection of Polyethylene glycol reveals chronic human exposure through pharmaceutical drugs.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a synthetic polymer ubiquitous in pharmaceuticals, personal care products, food additives, and industrial manufacturing. Despite its widespread use and potential importance as an exposure chemical, the prevalence of PEG exposure and its excretion in human populations remain largely uncharacterized. Moreover, PEG detected in human biofluids is frequently assumed to arise from analytical contamination during sample preparation, potentially obscuring its contribution to the human exposome and confounding metabolic phenotyping studies. Here, we show that PEG as a compo

Preparation and characterization polyethylene Glycol @ Alginate-Chitosan nanocomposite tailored for oral insulin delivery.

The incidence of diabetes is rising globally in large numbers due to genetic factors and dietary habits. Much research has gone into creating a safe and efficient particle drug delivery system for insulin. Polyethylene glycol @ Alginate-Chitosan nanocomposite was prepared using the ionic gelation process. Its diameter was examined using TEM and found to be in the nanometer range, with a spherical shape. FTIR verified that the nanoparticles' carboxylic groups of alginates were connected to chitosan's ammonium groups. The encapsulation efficiency was 96.6 ± 1.8% (n = 3). The DSC and FTIR results

Oral absorption of high molecular weight polyethylene glycols: mechanistic, safety and regulatory insights.

The gastrointestinal absorption of macromolecules represents a major challenge in both drug development and regulatory evaluation, as the intestinal barrier is highly effective in limiting the systemic uptake of large molecules. Nevertheless, understanding the mechanisms that govern macromolecule permeability is essential for assessing the safety, efficacy profile, and regulatory qualification of substance-based healthcare products. Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) represent a useful reference system for understanding the physiological limits of macromolecule absorption and for supporting evidence-

Synergistic degradation of polyethylene by a restructured bacterial consortium isolated from marine plastic debris.

Polyethylene (PE) remains environmentally persistent due to its inert backbone and high molecular weight, with biodegradation hindered by low efficiency and unclear community-level mechanisms. In this study, we reconstructed a synthetic consortium, Z123, comprising Nitratireductor sp. Z-1 and Gordonia spp. Z-2 and Z-3 isolated from a consistent enrichment system. Z123 achieved 9.98% weight loss and 50.88% molecular weight reduction within 30 days, outperforming most consortia degrading pristine low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Integrated genomic and proteomic analyses suggested functional diff

Functional and Histological Outcomes After Polyethylene Glycol Fusion of Rat Sciatic Nerve Transection.

PURPOSE: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) fusion has been reported to restore axonal continuity after nerve repair if initiated before Wallerian degeneration (WD). Sterile α and Toll/Interleukin-1 Receptor motif-containing 1 (SARM1) inhibition can potentially delay WD. We hypothesized that PEG fusion in SARM1 knockout (KO) rats would allow for improved strength and nerve regeneration following nerve transection. METHODS: A total of 32 wild-type (WT) and 32 SARM1-KO rats underwent sciatic nerve transection, followed by standard neurorrhaphy or PEG fusion. Baseline compound nerve action potentials (CN

The effect of sequentially increased polyethylene constraint on impingement in reverse shoulder arthroplasty: a biomechanical investigation.

BACKGROUND: The constraint of the polyethylene liner in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) can affect glenohumeral joint stability. However, its influence on glenohumeral range of motion (ROM) remains unclear. Therefore, it was the objective of this study to determine the effect of sequentially increasing polyethylene liner constraint on impingement-free ROM following rTSA. Additionally, these sequentially increasing constraint designs were evaluated with various humeral neck-shaft angles (NSAs), glenosphere diameters, and a new variable termed the polyethylene rim width. METHODS: Twe
