[Pseudophlebitis of the lower limbs. A critical study from 102 suspected cases of deep venous thrombosis].

Clinical diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis appears as uneasy, because of inconstant and non-specific symptoms. When studying a phlebitis, the risk to diagnose venous thrombosis is over 50 p. 100. This review of 102 patients, supposed to present with phlebitis, confirms such data. The diagnosis reliability depends mainly on the physician's experience. Examination and clinical research, combined with Doppler data make possible to perform a good diagnosis in 4 cases out of 5. However, in 20 p. 100, phlebography is strongly required, appearing as an essential examination. Analysis of epidemiolog

Campylobacter fetus septic arthritis: report of a case.

We report a case of septic arthritis caused by the fastidious gram-negative rod Campylobacter fetus. We suggest that the organism may be part of the endogenous flora and that the clinical infections tend to occur in compromised hosts. Our patient is the first to be described with multiple myeloma and C. fetus septic arthritis. The documented cases of culture-proven C. fetus septic arthritis reported to date have occurred in three men and one woman, all in the seventh and eighth decades of life, with a mono-articular large joint distribution. The septic arthritis always occurred in previously i

The etiology and management of cystic adventitial disease.

BACKGROUND: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition that affects arteries and veins. The etiology remains controversial and several treatment methods have been described. By understanding the pathogenesis of CAD, we can improve the surgical treatment, reduce recurrence rates, and improve patient outcomes. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of the world's literature. METHODS: We searched across multiple scientific databases and cross-referenced each article to collect the world's literature on CAD. Studies included were those that reported a case or cas

A novel microvascular arterio-neural pathway for intraneural ganglion cyst formation secondary to cystic adventitial disease: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) and intraneural ganglion cysts (IGCs) are rare mucinous lesions typically linked to an articular origin via macroscopic conduits. While secondary propagation between vascular and neural systems may occur through shared fascial sheaths, a direct microvascular route has not been previously described. OBSERVATIONS: A 60-year-old man presented with progressive left tibial neuropathy. High-resolution 7T MRI and surgery revealed a large popliteal CAD lesion connecting to the knee joint via the middle genicular artery, alongside a secondary tibial IGC lac

[Features of pathological changes of fibro-cartilaginous tissue knee in patients with Baker cyst.].

OBJECTIVE: Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate the characteristics of pathological changes of fibro-cartilage of the knee in patients with Baker cyst, to assess the compliance of degrees of damage stages of osteoarthritis on a scale of Kellgren–Lawrence (K–L), and compare the results with the data of other researchers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included patients (38–82 years) with a cyst Baker accidentally detected during ultrasound veins of the lower extremities. The subjects underwent a single knee MRI. MRI was made in three dimensions using 3D gradient-echo protocol.

Prevalence of knee abnormalities in patients with osteoarthritis and anterior cruciate ligament injury identified with peripheral magnetic resonance imaging: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: 1) To assess, with a peripheral magnetic resonance imaging system (pMRI), the prevalence of bony and soft tissue abnormalities in the knee joints of normal subjects, osteoarthritis (OA) patients, and individuals who have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture; and 2) to compare the prevalence among groups. METHODS: Magnetic resonance (MR) images of 28 healthy, 32 OA, and 26 ACL damaged knees were acquired with a 1.0-T pMRI system. Two radiologists graded the presence and severity of 9 MR image features: cartilage degeneration, osteophytes, subchondral cyst, bone marr

Turning the Page in Osteoarthritis Assessment with the Use of Ultrasound.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review summarizes the last 5 years of published, peer-reviewed research on the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) in osteoarthritis (OA). RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple features relevant to OA can be visualized on US, including synovitis, erosion, enthesitis, osteophytes, cartilage damage, meniscal extrusion, and popliteal cysts. US can be used to confirm a diagnosis of OA or make an alternate diagnosis in the clinical setting. When a standardized protocol is used, US is a reliable modality for assessment of the features of OA. Findings on US can predict progr

[Lipoma arborescens occurring in both knees at different times: a case report].

Lipoma arborescens is a rare intraarticular lesion, mainly affecting the knee. A fourteen-year-old girl presented with a slow-growing painless mass in the right knee, of a six-year history. There were no limitations in the movements of the knee. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple lesions showing villous lipomatous proliferation of the synovium in the supra- and retropatellar regions and effusion in the knee joint. The mass was excised with arthrotomy and synovectomy and a histopathologic diagnosis of lipoma arborescens was made. Two years postoperatively, and when the right kne

[Magnetic resonance imaging of the knee menisci. Normal aspects. Misleading images. Meniscus degeneration. Anatomic correlations].

The authors report the result of a study on 5 knees of fresh corpses explored with magnetic resonance imaging, including 1 examined before and after intraarticular contrast injection, and on 15 asymptomatic subjects examined with the same procedure. A very thorough study of the menisci and of their attachment, ie. The tibial insertion of the menisceal horns, the transverse ligament, and the meniscofemoral ligament, is possible with T1-weighted MR sequences. The T2-weighted sequences, either following intraarticular contrast injection or in cases of articular effusion, allow analyzing the capsu

Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are generally complicated by thrombosis and distal embolization, whereas rupture is rare. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcome in a cohort of patients who had surgery for ruptured PAA (rPAA). METHODS: Operations for rPAA were identified from the Swedish Vascular Registry, Swedvasc, 1987-2012. Medical records and imaging were reviewed. Comparison was made with patients treated for PAA without rupture. RESULTS: Forty-five patients with rPAA were identified. The proportion with rupture among those operated o

Association of complicated Baker's cysts with knee pathologies as compared to simple Baker's cysts.

Baker's cysts (BCs) are known to be associated with intra-articular pathologies. BCs can be classified into 2 types: simple and complicated. Although some studies have focused on BC using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is the gold standard examination, no study has compared knee MRI features in patients with simple and complicated BCs. To assess the relationship between the type of BC (simple vs complicated) and other knee pathologies using MRI. Seventy patients who underwent knee MRI examination due to symptomatic knee were retrospectively recruited from April 2011 to April 2021 at a

An unexpected event after deep vein thrombosis in spinal cord injury: Ruptured Baker's cyst.

Context: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a well-known complication of spinal cord injury (SCI). Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) may be used in SCI patients who develop DVT, but can lead to subcutaneous bleeding. If subcutaneous bleeding occurs, then lymphedema, cellulitis, muscle or tendon tearing, or baker's cyst rupture should be considered in the differential diagnosis.Findings: Herein, we present a 61-year-old female patient who was hospitalized for rehabilitation due to paraplegia, and used LMWH due to DVT development. The patient suddenly developed pain, swelling, and discoloration of

Demonstration of Lesions Produced by Cooled Radiofrequency Neurotomy for Chronic Osteoarthritic Knee Pain: A Case Presentation.

UNLABELLED: This case presentation demonstrates radiographic evidence of lesions created following cooled radiofrequency (cRF) neurotomy of the knee. A 67-year-old man presented with chronic left knee osteoarthritis, pain, and disability. After a failed trial of conservative treatments, the patient underwent diagnostic genicular nerve blocks and subsequent cRF neurotomy of the left knee. Shortly after cRF, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left knee was performed. On MRI, lesions created by cRF ablation were identified. The images presented in this case offer a visual explanation for the

[Pigmented villonodular synovitis. A rare differential diagnosis of popliteal space-occupying lesion].

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a disease that involves the lining of joints, bursae and tendon sheaths. The incidence is low and estimated to be 1.8 patients per million population. The cause of PVNS is unclear and discussed to be either inflammatory or neoplastic. PVNS has been described in 2 forms different for prognosis and treatment (nodular and diffuse). The articular form almost appears in the knee joint as we describe below in a 14 year-old patient. PVNS was first defined in 1941 by Jaffe e.a. [7]. Because of the uncommon occurrence of the disease it is difficult to amass pa

[Arthroscopic therapy of Baker's cyst].

Arthroscopic therapy of Baker's cysts contains repair of all intraarticular lesions and sealing of the junction between Baker's cyst and the dorsal recessus of the knee joint. All therapeutic steps can be sufficiently done throughout the ventral standard approaches. 18 patients have been treated by this technique between 1992 and 1994. 14 of them were examined after an average of 27 months. In all patients one or more lesions were detected arthroscopically. (12 cartilage-damages, 10 synovialities, 9 meniscal tears, 2 ruptures of the a.c.l.). Cyst recurrence was found arthrosonographically in t
