Genetic divergence among Venezuelan populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) is the primary vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela. An analysis of alleles at seven enzyme-encoding loci among four populations from different geographic and epidemiological regions revealed strong genetic substructuring. Isozyme analysis indicated that L. longipalpis in Venezuela is a complex of at least two subspecies. Possible differences in population size during their evolutionary histories, varying colonization histories and geological events may explain discrepancies in the patterns of variation observed at genetic markers between these fou

Leishmaniasis in greater Athens, Greece. Entomological studies.

Greater Athens, the largest urban area in Greece, has a population of 3.1 million and is home for most of the human and canine cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) reported in Greece. Seven species of sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were identified in light- and sticky-trap surveys in the area in 1993. Although none of the flies was found in wooded areas or scrub, flies were collected from quarries, corrals, wells, walls, houses and animal shelters. There were small 'island' populations in residential districts and moderate or large populations in the quarries and corrals in the foothills of

Populations of larvae of anopheles spp. in natural breeding sites in western Venezuela, an area of refractory malaria.

Studies have been undertaken into on the diversity and relative abundance of larvae of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) spp. in 22 permanent or temporary pools in an area of 70 km2 in the eastern piedmont of the Venezuela Andes, between the mountains and the plains, an area in which malaria is refractory and A. nuñeztovari is present. Twelve species were identified, the most frequent, abundant and sympatric being A. triannulatus, A. albitarsis, A. nuñeztovari, A. oswaldoi and A. strodei. The samples from the permanent pools showed greater diversity of species and greater numbers of larvae than the sa

The effects of model selection on confidence intervals for the size of a closed population.

One encounters in the literature estimates of some rates of genetic and congenital disorders based on log-linear methods to model possible interactions among sources. Often the analyst chooses the simplest model consistent with the data for estimation of the size of a closed population and calculates confidence intervals on the assumption that this simple model is correct. However, despite an apparent excellent fit of the data to such a model, we note here that the resulting confidence intervals may well be misleading in that they can fail to provide an adequate coverage probability. We illust

The transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in an area of Lake Province, Tanganyika.

This paper records the results of detailed studies carried out over a two-year period on the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in an area of Lake Province, Tanganyika. The ecology of a variety of snail habitats is described; and data on the biology of the principal molluscan host (Bulinus (Physopsis) nasutus productus), on seasonal fluctuations in its population density and associated cercarial infection rates, on its response to desiccation and on other aspects of population dynamics are presented and discussed.Taking into consideration the seasonal fluctuation in snail numbers which oc…

[A descriptive profile of the canine population in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, from 1994 to 2004].

From 1994 to 2004, the canine population in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, suffered two major canine zoonoses: rabies and visceral leishmaniasis. Changes in the dog population during this period were evaluated using canine census data from 1994 and 2004 and the results of blood samples for diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis in 1999. The ratio of dogs per 10 inhabitants varied from 1.7 in 1994 to 2.0 in 1999 and 1.8 in 2004. The percentage of puppies less than 1 year of age increased from 20% to 32.5%, and the number of euthanized dogs also increased after 1999, when visceral leish

Decoding the impact of environmental shifts on snail density dynamics in the Yangtze River basin: a 26-year study.

BACKGROUND: With the intensification of climate change and human engineering activities, environmental changes have affected schistosome-transmitting snails. This study explored the influence of environmental changes on the evolution of snail populations. METHODS: Data from annual snail surveys and related factors such as hydrology, temperature, vegetation, etc., on nine bottomlands from 1997 to 2022 were collected retrospectively from multiple sources. Interpretable machine learning and the Bayesian spatial-temporal model assessed the relationship between environmental change and snail densi

Anopheles gambiae (s.l.) is found where few are looking: assessing mosquito diversity and density outside inhabited areas using diverse sampling methods.

BACKGROUND: One of the promising current approaches to curb malaria lies in genetic vector control, the implementation of which will require an improved understanding of the movement of genetic constructs among mosquito populations. To predict potential gene flow from one area to another, it is important to begin to understand mosquito dynamics outside of the commonly-sampled village areas, and thus how genes may move between villages. This study assessed the presence and relative abundance of mosquitoes in a 6-km corridor between two villages in western Burkina Faso. METHODS: The area surrou

Life histories and conservation of long-lived reptiles, an illustration with the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

Successful species conservation is dependent on adequate estimates of population dynamics, but age-specific demographics are generally lacking for many long-lived iteroparous species such as large reptiles. Accurate demographic information allows estimation of population growth rate, as well as projection of future population sizes and quantitative analyses of fitness trade-offs involved in the evolution of life-history strategies. Here, a long-term capture-recapture study was conducted from 1978 to 2014 on the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) in southern Florida. Over the study period,

Exploring the contribution of host susceptibility to epidemiological patterns of Schistosoma japonicum infection using an individual-based model.

We recently reported the analysis of epidemiological data suggesting variability in individual susceptibility to infection by Schistosoma japonicum among rural villagers who reside in Sichuan Province of southwestern China. By supplementing the data used in the earlier analysis from other studies we have reported from this region, we presented improved estimates of cercarial exposure, which in turn, result in stronger evidence of susceptibility. This analysis was conducted using an individual-based mathematical model (IBM) whose use was motivated by the nature and extent of field data from the

Surveillance of Aedes aegypti: comparison of house index with four alternative traps.

INTRODUCTION: The mosquito Aedes aegypti, vector of dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever viruses, is an important target of vector control programs in tropical countries. Most mosquito surveillance programs are still based on the traditional household larval surveys, despite the availability of new trapping devices. We report the results of a multicentric entomological survey using four types of traps, besides the larval survey, to compare the entomological indices generated by these different surveillance tools in terms of their sensitivity to detect mosquito density variation. METHODS: The

Heterozygote Advantage in a Finite Population: Black Color in Wolves.

There is a striking color polymorphism for wolves in the Yellowstone National Park where approximately half the wolves are black. The genetic basis for this polymorphism is known, and fitnesses of the genotypes are estimated. These estimates suggest that there is strong heterozygote advantage but substantial asymmetry in the fitness differences of the 2 homozygotes. Theoretically, such fitnesses in a finite population are thought to reduce genetic variation at least as fast as if there were no selection at all. Because the color polymorphism has remained at about the same frequency for 17 year

Phlebotomine sandfly fauna and natural Leishmania infection rates in a rural area of Cerrado (tropical savannah) in Nova Mutum, State of Mato Grosso in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) has been reported in every municipality of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, but the transmission epidemiology remains poorly understood. Our study was developed in a rural area of the Nova Mutum municipality where four autochthonous cases of ACL were reported in 2009. Our aims were to describe the local phlebotomine sandfly fauna and to investigate the infection rates and infecting Leishmania species in the captured sandflies. METHODS: Entomological captures were performed bimonthly at 10 fixed sites close to the edge of a forested area be

Plague circulation and population genetics of the reservoir Rattus rattus: the influence of topographic relief on the distribution of the disease within the Madagascan focus.

BACKGROUND: Landscape may affect the distribution of infectious diseases by influencing the population density and dispersal of hosts and vectors. Plague (Yersinia pestis infection) is a highly virulent, re-emerging disease, the ecology of which has been scarcely studied in Africa. Human seroprevalence data for the major plague focus of Madagascar suggest that plague spreads heterogeneously across the landscape as a function of the relief. Plague is primarily a disease of rodents. We therefore investigated the relationship between disease distribution and the population genetic structure of th…

Evaluation of a linear spectral mixture model and vegetation indices (NDVI and EVI) in a study of schistosomiasis mansoni and Biomphalaria glabrata distribution in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

This paper analyses the associations between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) on the prevalence of schistosomiasis and the presence of Biomphalaria glabrata in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Additionally, vegetation, soil and shade fraction images were created using a Linear Spectral Mixture Model (LSMM) from the blue, red and infrared channels of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer spaceborne sensor and the relationship between these images and the prevalence of schistosomiasis and the presence of B. glabrata was analysed
