Ankle sprain and postural sway in basketball players.

The present study compares postural ankle stability between previously injured basketball players, uninjured players and a control/group. Postural sway was recorded and analysed by stabilometry using a specially designed computer-assisted forceplate. Recordings were obtained for 60 s on each foot. The stabilometric results in the players with no previous injuries did not differ from those in the controls. Players with a previously injured ankle differed significantly from the control group. These players had a larger mean postural sway and used a larger sway area.

[Wallenberg's syndrome: an assessment of the dysphagic and postural symptomatology].

Dysphagia and postural disorders are the most important symptoms of the Wallenberg [correction of Wallemberg] syndrome, which takes in a considerable number of neurological symptoms including an alternate sensitive syndrome, the Claude Bernard Horner syndrome, paralysis of the half palate, of the half pharynx and of the vocal fold on the side of the injury, a vestibular syndrome and, finally, a cerebellar hemisyndrome. In the course of this study, four patients with the Wallenberg [correction of Wallemberg] syndrome were examined and underwent further periodical checks after injury. All the pa

Vestibular and postural findings in the motion sickness syndrome.

The motion sickness syndrome constitutes varying degrees of subjective motion intolerance and three objective findings: hyperactive VOR (79%), hip sway strategy (60%), and positional nystagmus (42%). It is present in subjects who have a strong history of motion sickness. Vestibular rehabilitation appears to help control symptoms. The study also suggests an inheritance pattern, but a structured pedigree could not be constructed. Prospective studies are warranted to further establish the patterns of the motion sickness syndrome.

Postural sway during retinal image stabilisation.

Posturographic measurements using a piezoelectric platform were made in normal subjects while wearing a combination of spectacle and contact lens providing partial stabilisation of the retinal image (RIS). The amount of postural sway seen while wearing the device at rest is intermediate between the "normal vision" and "eyes closed" conditions, and increases with increasing amounts of RIS. However, when large active head-and-eye movements are performed, postural sway is dramatically increased when using RIS, and is then worse than while performing the same task in the "eyes closed" condition. I

Mechanism of the postural vasoconstrictor response in the human foot.

1. The mechanism of postural vasoconstriction in the skin of the foot was examined in 102 healthy subjects by using laser Doppler flowmetry. 2. In 45 subjects, when one foot was lowered 50 cm below heart level and the other foot kept horizontal, blood flow was progressively reduced in the dependent foot (by 79%) with a concomitant, but less pronounced, reduction in flow in the horizontal foot (by 18%), indicating that a central mechanism is involved. After lumbar sympathetic blockade (in 10 patients with epidural anaesthesia), the flow in the horizontal foot remained virtually constant, indica

Postural load and the development of musculo-skeletal illness.

Early in the 1970s, high rates of sick-leave due to musculo-skeletal complaints were frequently recorded among workers at Standard Telefon and Kabelfabrik's (STK's) factory in Norway. Workstations were redesigned according to ergonomics principles that allowed workers a wider choice of working postures and following their introduction in 1975, there was a marked reduction in sickness absence. Postural load was studied in groups of female workers in well defined assembly tasks. Trapezius load was recorded by electromyography (EMG). Simultaneously, postural angles of the upper arm in the shoulde…

Postural hypotension: adrenergic responsivity and levodopa therapy.

Four subjects with orthostatic hypotension were given intravenous infusions of methoxamine and isoproterenol. Methoxamine caused an elevation in systolic blood pressure. Isoproterenol resulted in a fall in blood pressure in three of the subjects. The heart rate decreased with methoxamine, but increased with isoproterenol. The responsivity in orthostatic hypotension was compatible with denervation supersensitivity. These effects were compared with the responsivity to methoxamine and isoproterenol of five labile hypertensives. Two patients with severe orthostatic hypotension were treated with re

Modification of the postural response of the normal dog by blindfolding.

1. Normal dogs were trained to stand quietly upon a movable platform. The animals' postural adjustments in response to sinusoidal motion of the platform were assessed in both the normal and the blindfolded condition. The induced postural adjustments were described by the Fourier coefficients for the fundamental of the input together with the coefficients which were integral multiples of the fundamental.2. All of the output variables, including motion at the hind limb joints and of the body, showed modifications when the dogs were blindfolded. The body motion increased in amplitude, as measured

Factors Influencing Postural Instability in Bilateral Vestibulopathy.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) causes chronic postural instability refractory to treatments, leading to a reduced quality of life and increased risk of falls. However, the severity of postural instability varies considerably among individuals with BVP. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify clinical factors associated with postural instability in patients with BVP. METHODS: Fifty-two patients with BVP (26 males, 26 females; mean age: 57.0±15.5 y) were enrolled. Associations between postural stability assessed by center of pressure (COP) velocity during posturography (4 condition

Bridging postural biomechanics and knee arthroplasty success.

Despite advances in surgical techniques and implant design, a significant number of patients remain dissatisfied after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), often because of factors unrelated to the arthroplasty itself. Among these, pelvic biomechanics play a vital yet frequently overlooked role in affecting knee alignment, load distribution, and functional outcomes. This review explores how pelvic orientation, tilt, and dynamics, as well as coronal asymmetries and spinopelvic mobility, influence knee biomechanics and TKA planning. By viewing the pelvis not as a static reference but as a dynamic biom

Postural alignment differences in children with urinary incontinence.

This study examined whether postural alignment differs between children with urinary incontinence and asymptomatic children. Participants were children aged 5-14 with daytime urinary incontinence (n = 14), monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (n = 13), non-monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (n = 13), and asymptomatic children (n = 13). Postural alignment was assessed with the PostureScreen Mobile application. Lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated using the Dysfunctional Voiding and Incontinence Scoring System, Vancouver Bladder/Bowel Dysfunction Questionnaire, and Childhood Bladder and Bow…

Prevalence of Central Sensitization in Postural Tachycardia Syndrome.

IMPORTANCE: A previous study showed a high prevalence of central sensitization syndrome (CSS) in patients with autonomic symptoms. The prevalence of CSS in postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia, is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the prevalence of CSS in POTS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study included patients with a POTS diagnosis confirmed by autonomic testing at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital between 2022 and 2025. Data were analyzed from April to August 2025. EXPOSURE: POTS with and without CSS. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Central

Postural Sway Characteristics Distinguish Types of Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: The increasing number of patients with dementia necessitates the development of rapid and convenient tools to assist with dementia diagnosis. We previously demonstrated the difference in the postural control characteristics during static standing among Alzheimer disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and vascular dementia (VaD). In this study, we evaluated the classification accuracy of the postural sway test to assess its capacity to distinguish between types of dementia. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Memory clinic outpatients aged 65-85 year
