Mindfulness attenuates both emotional and behavioral reactions following psychological contract breach: A two-stage moderated mediation model.

Breach of the psychological contract between organization and employee often evokes employee hostility, which in turn can instigate deviant behaviors. We examine whether employee mindfulness attenuates these reactions to psychological contract breach. Specifically, we develop and test a two-stage moderated mediation model in which employee mindfulness moderates the mediational path from psychological contract breach via hostility to deviance by attenuating both emotional and behavioral reactions. Findings across four studies (with 872 employee participants) both measuring and manipulating brea

Applied cognitive psychology: Implications of cognitive psychology for clinical psychology and psychotherapy.

Cognitive psychology has made numerous contributions to clinical psychology, and these contributions are considered especially with reference to the anxiety disorders. It is argued that there are four major contributions that can be identified. First, the cognitive approach has led to the development of complex models showing the main cognitive processes and structures of relevance to an understanding of anxiety disorders. Second, controlled laboratory studies permit a more detailed investigation of cognitive biases in anxious patients than generally is feasible in more naturalistic settings.

[Training teams in suicide risk assessment: the role of advanced practice nurses].

Suicide risk encompasses a variety of complex clinical situations that require specific skills on the part of nurses. A process of reflecting on past experiences provides a better understanding of the role of advanced practice nurses in their interdisciplinary collaboration and clinical leadership responsibilities. The implementation of a training program on suicide risk prevention at a medical-psychological center concretely illustrates their contribution to enhancing team competencies.

Treatment-resistant depression: Established and emerging therapies.

In 2023, the percentage of people in the US who experienced depression in their lifetime was at an all-time high of 29%. Depression causes considerable distress and functional impairment affecting quality of life, employment, and interpersonal relationships. Many patients fail to respond to treatment with antidepressants and psychological-behavioral therapy, resulting in a condition known as treatment-resistant depression (TRD). TRD contributes to negative outcomes for patients and increased costs to the healthcare system. Recognizing TRD and understanding TRD interventions are important aspec

Reading the Child Within: How Bibliotherapy Can Help the Victim of Child Sexual Abuse.

Bibliotherapy, the use of storytelling as part of the healing process, has been successfully incorporated into clinical practice for a variety of indications including psychological trauma. This therapeutic modality, which incorporates mindful meditation, non-threatening use of metaphor, and autonomic regulation, can help children and adults alike, who are willing to engage in a story. Yet, bibliotherapy has not been widely adapted as a routine part of the therapeutic toolbox in the context of sufferers of childhood sexual abuse. Here, we review current practices regarding the adjunctive use o

Clinical and anthropological perspectives on chemical relaxing of afro-textured hair.

The culturally engrained practice of 'relaxing' afro-textured hair has been linked with hair and scalp disorders. Herein, we discuss the evolution of human hair types, focusing in particular on afro-textured hair. We explore the biological features of this hair type, and discuss the different methods employed to straighten afro-textured hair, focusing in particular on chemical straightening. We also examine clinical, anthropological, and psychological issues associated with this latter practice. Examples of common scalp pathologies associated with chronic hair relaxing, such as alopecia, hair

NBDE Part II practice analyses: an overview.

The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing emphasize the importance of documenting and describing the procedures followed in developing valid test content. As a result, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, the testing agency responsible for administering the National Board Dental Examination Part I and Part II, routinely communicates information about the validity of Part II to dental schools and other communities of interest. Since 2000, the content of Part II has been validated through the use of three practice analyses. This article provides an overview of thes

Management of unusual case of self-inflicted penetrating craniocerebral injury by a nail.

During war, sharp high-speed missiles have been driven inside the brain; however, in civilian practice it is rare to see such episodes. An approximately 10-cm long nail was driven inside the brain in an attempt to commit suicide by a schizophrenic patient. The case is being reported for its rarity in civilian practice and as a case of clinical interest. After investigating the patient by plain X-rays and a CT scan, he was operated by a neurosurgical team and the nail was successfully removed. In post-operative phase, patient was given medical and psychiatric care along with psychological couns

Post-intensive care interviews: implications for future practice.

The measurement of outcome from intensive care, including the long-term physiological and psychological effects of disease and intensive therapy has tended to receive scanty attention. Little consideration has been given to the implications this may have for the patients, relatives and for future practice. Patients were interviewed in their own homes after 6 months of recovery, to allow freedom of expression and comfort within their own environment (territory). This study demonstrates that data generated by face-to-face interviews can be of immense importance to intensivists in assessing the e

Supporting the well-being of nurses working with trauma.

The nursing profession has long been associated with exposure to traumatic experiences, including mental health crises, violence, emergencies and death. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic amplified the importance of recognising the effects that working with trauma can have on nurses' physical and psychological well-being, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. This article explores the concept of trauma and its various manifestations, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and secondary traumatic stress, which are increasingly prevalent among nurses. It also co

Work demands, self-care, and mental health in lawyers.

Lawyers face heightened risks of psychological distress, burnout, and alcohol use compared to other professions, possibly reflecting their demanding work environment and reduced engagement in protective behaviours. This study, grounded in the Job Demands-Resources theory, explored the link between workplace demands and various mental health outcomes among lawyers, as well as the role of mindful self-care, adaptive and maladaptive passion for work. One hundred and eighty-nine private practice and in-house lawyers participated in an online survey assessing work demands, mental health indicators,

Reporting Individual-Level Research Results from Neurocognitive and Psychological Research in People Living with HIV: Lessons from Dementia Research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There are growing expectations for the return of individual-level research results (RoR), which promotes autonomy and potential clinical and personal benefits. There are ethical and practical challenges, however, that may be exacerbated in research that assesses neurocognitive and psychological outcomes, including HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). This paper reviews central concepts for RoR and recent empirical and conceptual articles from Alzheimer's disorder (AD) as a model for HIV. RECENT FINDINGS: Data from AD studies indicate high participant interest and
