Immunization Offer Targeting Migrants: Policies and Practices in Italy.

The unprecedented flow of migrants over the last three years places Italy in front of new issues regarding medical care from the rescue phase up to the integration into the national health services, including preventive actions. We used online questionnaires to investigate the Italian national and regional policies for immunization offer targeting asylum seekers, refugees, irregular migrants and unaccompanied minors. Another questionnaire was used to assess how these policies are translated into practice in migrant reception centres and community health services. Questionnaires were filled out

Crusted scabies in remote Australia, a new way forward: lessons and outcomes from the East Arnhem Scabies Control Program.

Crusted scabies is a highly infectious, debilitating and disfiguring disease, and remote Aboriginal communities of northern Australia have the highest reported rates of the condition in the world. We draw on monitoring data of the East Arnhem Scabies Control Program to discuss outcomes and lessons learnt through managing the condition in remote communities. Using active case finding, we identified seven patients with crusted scabies in three communities and found most had not presented to health services despite active disease. We compared presentations and hospitalisations for a cumulative to

Delayed educational services during Covid-19 and their relationships with the mental health of individuals with disabilities.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, individuals with disabilities (IWD), like many others, have not been able to benefit effectively from educational and school-based mental health services, which are vital to achieving mental good health. This study aimed to collect views of IWD about how their mental health was affected by the school closure during Covid-19. Thirty-one IWD were interviewed and data were analyzed thematically. Findings indicated that the educational delay, combined with the pressure of the preventive measures against Covid-19 was associated with (i) diffi

Confronting Structural Racism in the Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis in the United States.

Tuberculosis incidence in the United States is declining, yet projections indicate that we will not eliminate tuberculosis in the 21st centu … ulosis screening rates; and(4) fear-mongering among immigrants that discourages them from accessing preventive health services. To eliminate tuberculosis, we must first eliminate racist policies that limit essential health services in vulnerable communities.

Medical facilities in the neighborhood and incidence of sudden cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Medical establishments in the neighborhood, such as pharmacies and primary care clinics, may play a role in improving access to preventive care and treatment and could explain previously reported neighborhood variations in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) incidence and survival. METHODS: The Cardiac Arrest Blood Study Repository is a population-based repository of data from adult cardiac arrest patients and population-based controls residing in King County, Washington. We examined the association between the availability of medical facilities near home with SCA risk, using adult (age 1

Better health care for people with learning disabilities.

Health care and health promotion are both integral parts of the health service of the 1990s. People with learning disabilities should have access to the same health services as all other members of society. Their specific needs should not prevent them from such access; rather, services should be provided that facilitate their participation. This paper highlights some factors that have prevented people with learning disabilities from having appropriate access to health-care and health promotion services. It also outlines the components which will help to redress the balance, including practical

Preventive care in older cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: To study factors that influence receipt of preventive care in older cancer survivors. METHODS: We analyzed a nationally representative sample of 12,458 older adults from the 2003 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. Factors associated with non-receipt of preventive care were explored among cancer and non-cancer survivors, using logistic regression. RESULTS: Among the cancer survivors, 1883 were diagnosed >1 year at survey completion. A cancer history was independently associated with receipt of mammogram (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.34-1.85), flu shot (AOR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.16-1.53),

Life stress, illness and social supports.

Stress has been shown to lower resistance to disease and thus to have a significant effect on susceptibility to a variety of physical and psychological illnesses. A correlation has also been established between the degree of social stress and an individual's use of medical services. However, the majority of people do not respond to stress in these ways. Social supports (e.g. a caring family) seem to be an important protective factor against the effects of stress. Other mtethods of protection (meditation, relaxation response or learning specific coping skills) are also important, but have been

Automated telephone communication systems for preventive healthcare and management of long-term conditions.

BACKGROUND: Automated telephone communication systems (ATCS) can deliver voice messages and collect health-related information from patients using either their telephone's touch-tone keypad or voice recognition software. ATCS can supplement or replace telephone contact between health professionals and patients. There are four different types of ATCS: unidirectional (one-way, non-interactive voice communication), interactive voice response (IVR) systems, ATCS with additional functions such as access to an expert to request advice (ATCS Plus) and multimodal ATCS, where the calls are delivered as

Sociodemographic, insurance, and risk profiles of maternal smokers post the 1990s: how can we reach them?

Declines in prenatal smoking rates have changed the composition of maternal smokers while public policy during the 1990s has likely made it more difficult to reach them. Medicaid expansions during the 1980s/early 1990s insured more women some time during pregnancy, but the 1996 welfare reform unexpectedly reduced enrollment in Medicaid by eligible pregnant women; overall, insurance coverage has declined since 2000. As the public sector struggles with fewer resources, it is important to understand the sociodemographic characteristics of prenatal smokers, their patterns of care, and nonsmoking r

CE: Tuberculosis: A New Screening Recommendation and an Expanded Approach to Elimination in the United States.

: Nurses play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and in the prevention of tuberculosis transmission through infection control practices. To eliminate tuberculosis in the United States, however, an expanded approach to testing and treating people with latent tuberculosis infection must be implemented. Recently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued a new recommendation statement on latent tuberculosis infection testing that expands nurses' opportunities to identify at-risk populations for tuberculosis prevention. In combination with newer testing me

Hope for children and families: targeting abusive parenting and the associated impairment of children.

The purpose of this study is to distill the "effective practice elements" from randomised controlled interventions (RCTs) to prevent the recurrence of abusive and neglectful parenting and the associated health and developmental impairment of children. The resulting elements would be used then to develop a step-by-step modular-systemic approach to intervention that is suitable to the needs of a variety of frontline practitioners in social care, health, and education. A series of 22 randomised RCTs were analysed using the distillation and matching approach to establish the presence of effective

Surveillance of certain health behaviors and conditions among states and selected local areas --- Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2009.

PROBLEM: Chronic diseases and conditions (e.g., heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes) are the leading causes of death in the United States. Controlling health risk behaviors and conditions (e.g., smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, excessive drinking, and obesity) and using preventive health-care services (e.g., physical examination, vaccination, screening for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, consumption of fruits and vegetables, and participation in regular leisure-time physical activity) can reduce morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases. Medicaid/CHIP Income Thresholds And Health Services Use Among Children In Low-Income Households, 2016-23.

Children in low-income households face health care barriers shaped by state Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) income eligibility thresholds. Using 2016-23 National Survey of Children's Health data (N = 124,250) merged with state data, we assessed associations between income thresholds and binary outcomes: insurance status, preventive care use, and unmet medical needs. A 1-standard-deviation increase in a state's income threshold (mean: 260 percent of the federal poverty level) was associated with a 1.10-percentage-point increase in consistent insurance and 0.78-percentage
