Jan Riordan: An Oral History.

While conducting my dissertation research on the professionalization of breastfeeding support, I identified key "founders" of lactation consulting. I focused on the people involved in the formation of the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, as certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and represented by the International Lactation Consultant Association. Jan Riordan was at the top of my list. As the editor and co-author of the first text on breastfeeding and human lactation for non-physicians, Dr. Riordan shaped the professional body of knowledge fo

Training for the job: evaluation of a self-defence training programme for correctional officers.

We investigated to what extent correctional officers were able to apply skills from their self-defence training in reality-based scenarios. Performance of nine self-defence skills were tested in different scenarios at three moments: before starting the self-defence training programme (Pre-test), halfway through (Post-test 1), and after (Post-test 2). Repeated measures analyses showed that performance on skills improved after the self-defence training. For each skill, however, there was a considerable number of correctional officers (range 4-73%) that showed insufficient performance on Post-tes

[Effects of the ISO 15189 accreditation on Nagoya University Hospital].

The Department of Clinical Laboratory, Nagoya University Hospital acquired ISO 15189 accreditation in November, 2009. The operation of our Quality Management System (QMS) was first surveyed in October, 2010. In this paper, we reported the activity for the preparation and operation of our QMS and the effects of ISO 15189 accreditation. We investigated the changes in the number and content on nonconformities, incident reports and complaints before and after accreditation as indicators to evaluate the effect of ISO 15189 accreditation. Post accreditation, the number of nonconformities and inciden

How can we best detect atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia of increasing prevalence associated with a reducible risk of stroke. We conducted a systematic review to address five questions relating to how we can best detect AF: 1. Are there useful screening tests to determine who should have a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG)? Potential screening tests, all with acceptable sensitivity, include pulse palpation, single-lead ECG and newer technologies such as modified sphygmomanometers or a finger probe device. Pulse palpation has a high number of false positives, but is the cheapest method. 2. Is it more effective

Teacher knowledge, instructional expertise, and the development of reading proficiency.

Teacher knowledge and instructional expertise have been found in correlational and pre- and posttest studies to be related to student reading achievement. This article summarizes data presented in this special issue and additional research to address four questions: (a) What do expert reading teachers know? (b) Why do teachers need to acquire this knowledge? (c) Do teachers believe they have this knowledge? and (d) Are teachers being adequately prepared to teach reading? Well-designed studies relevant to this topic have been sparse with a noticeable lack of attention given to identifying speci

Predictors of performance of students from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College on the licensure examinations of the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) structured admissions interview and other student measures predict success on the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) examinations. METHODS: An independent researcher combined CMCC and CCEB data by student name and then anonymized the data and destroyed the linking information. Backward stepwise multiple linear regressions were applied to external dependent variables from the CCEB and internal independent variables from the CMCC. RESULTS: Forty percent of the variance in the basi

Pharmacy staff training and development: upside-down thinking in a changing profession.

We suggest that the most fundamental change in staff development that must occur is recognition of the need for a professional belief system as the basis for any pharmaceutical care activity. Values derived from fundamental moral ideals and professional beliefs foster the development of attitudes and behaviors. It would be wrong to suggest or imply that such a change need only occur in postbaccalaureate training. The development of personal and professional value systems in existing primary professional training programs is inadequate--we do not yet do enough to develop people before they ente

Repeated Mini-CEX encounters as a workplace-based learning tool for final-year dental students: a convergent mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Workplace-based assessment is increasingly emphasized in competency-based health professions education because it allows direct observation of learners in authentic clinical settings. The Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) is widely used in medical education, but its use in undergraduate dental education, particularly in Pakistan, remains limited. This study explored changes associated with repeated Mini-CEX encounters among final-year dental students and examined students' reflective experiences related to feedback, confidence, and learning. METHODS: A convergent parall
