Interstitial deletion 9q22.32-q33.2 associated with additional familial translocation t(9;17)(q34.11;p11.2) in a patient with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome and features of Nail-Patella syndrome.

The phenotype of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome or basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS, #109400, OMIM), a Mendelian trait due to PTCH mutations has been reported in a few cases of interstitial deletion of chromosome 9q. We present an 11-year-old girl with clinical features consistent with BCNS including bridging of sella turcica, biparietal bossing, downward slanting palpebral fissures, mandible prognathism, pectus excavatum, thumb abnormalities, occult spina bifida at L5-S4, numerous basal cell nevi, and single basal cell carcinoma. Cytogenetic analysis using high-resolution banding techniques and fluores…

Stability of extraoral vertical ramus osteotomy: plate fixation versus maxillomandibular/skeletal suspension wire fixation.

The objective of this cephalometric study was to evaluate skeletal stability and time course of postoperative changes in 2 groups of mandibular prognathism patients following extraoral oblique vertical ramus osteotomy (VRO). One group (n = 22) received maxillomandibular fixation and skeletal suspension wires (MMF group) for a period of 8 weeks. In the other group (n = 22), the segments were rigidly fixed with plates and the patients were allowed to function immediately after surgery. Lateral cephalograms were taken on 5 occasions: immediately presurgical, immediately postsurgical, 8 weeks post…

Three-dimensional analysis of postoperative returning movement of perioperative condylar displacement after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular setback with different fixation methods.

This study aimed to evaluate postoperative returning movement of perioperative condylar displacement after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) depending on a fixation method using three-dimensional (3D) analysis of computed tomography (CT). Twenty-five mandibular prognathic patients (50 condyles) who underwent orthognathic surgery with BSSRO were divided into three groups depending on the fixation method, which consisted of miniplate only (Group A), combined with single bicortical screw (Group B), or with more than one bicortical screw (Group C). CT data taken before, immediately

[Detection to changes in hyoid and tongue positions, and pharyngeal airway following mandibular setback surgery by cone beam CT].

OBJECTIVE: To observe changes in tongue and hyoid position, and pharyngeal airway in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion after the combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. METHODS: Twenty patients were involved in this study. Cone beam CT (CBCT) was performed on patients one week before and six months after treatment. Raw data were reconstructed into three-dimensional model. To set up a three-dimensional reference frame, which was based by point "S", the sagittal and transversal measurements, cross sectional areas, partial and total volumes were computed. The three-dimension

Left pulmonary artery hypoplasia presenting with unilateral hyperluscent lung.

Agenesis or hypoplasia of the right or left pulmonary arteries are among the rarest pulmonary artery anomalies with left sided anomalies being reported even less frequently. Pulmonary artery agenesis should be suspected in asymptomatic patients if a plain chest X-ray shows asymmetric lung fields, lung hypoplasia, or hyperinflation of the contralateral lung. It must be considered as a rare cause of recurrent lower respiratory tract infections in childhood and in subjects with a low threshold for or recurrent "High Altitude Pulmonary Edema".

A three-dimensional analysis of soft and hard tissue changes after a mandibular setback surgery.

This paper is concerned with a three-dimensional (3D) analysis on soft and hard tissue changes after mandibular setback surgery. For comparing with previous two-dimensional (2D) cephalometric data, we proposed a three-dimensional registration and analysis method based on the cephalometric knowledge. The 3D changes of bone, soft tissue and the ratio of soft tissue to bony movement were investigated in eight skeletal class III mandibular prognathism patients. CT scans of each patient were taken at pre- and post-operative states. Each scan was registered to a universal 3D coordinate system define…

Mechanism of transient mental nerve paraesthesia in sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy.

We investigated the mechanism involved in paraesthesia associated with sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy by three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT). Ten female patients underwent this procedure between 1988 and 1991. The inferior alveolar neuro-vascular bundles remained intact during the sagittal osteotomy in all cases. We examined the changes in the shape of the foramen mandibulae over a period of 6 months during which the transient mental nerve paraesthesia was recovered, and studied the distance from the foramen mandibulae to the spina mentalis (F-S distance) as measured on 3

[TMJ diagnosis in oral and maxillofacial surgery].

Recording pathologic mandibular movements is of crucial importance to the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of the masticatory system. The electronic computersupported recording system presented in this paper is a diagnostic instrument of extremely high precision. The clinical and scientific applications possible with this system in oral and maxillofacial surgery are discussed.

Noonan's syndrome associated with cake kidney.

Noonan's syndrome is an established clinical entity. These cases are often associated with correctable cardiac abnormalities, cryptorchism, and abnormal urinary tract. Herein is described the first case of Noonan's syndrome associated with cake kidney. The very high incidence of renal tract abnormalities in association with this syndrome warrants an excretory urogram in these cases for proper evaluation and management.

Skin Symptoms That Appeared after Fixation with a Titanium Plate in a Jaw Deformity Patient Suffering from Palmoplantar Pustulosis: A Case Report.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a stubborn skin disease involving repeated aseptic small pustules on the palms and soles of the feet, which is triggered and exacerbated by metals and dental focal infections. There are few reports of an exacerbation of PPP symptoms after orthognathic surgery. The patient is a 40-year-old female who consulted an orthodontist at our hospital, complaining of a protruding maxilla and malocclusion. Under the diagnosis of skeletal prognathism, she underwent surgery for jaw deformity. Although no allergic symptoms were observed during the orthodontic treatment prior …

Developmental changes in the shape of the supralaryngeal vocal tract in chimpanzees.

The hyoid bone and larynx in human neonates are positioned as high as in other mammals. However, during postnatal life, they descend relativ … to the structural and morphological development of the facial skeleton and mandible, which affects prognathism and hyoid descent. These results support the hypothesis that the descent of the larynx evolved in at least two steps during hominoid evolution.
