Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) disorder: a preliminary study.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) disorder has been suggested for inclusion into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, in preparation), yet there is concern that NSSI is primarily a function of high borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of NSSI disorder and compare it to BPD and other DSM Axis I diagnoses commonly seen in clinical practice to aid in the determination of whether NSSI should be considered a separate, valid diagnostic entity. Chart data were

Imaging genetics of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are frequent and burdensome psychiatric diseases. Despite their moderate to strong heritabilities, the search for candidate genes has been limited by methodological shortcomings hitherto, e.g., the use of clinically defined, but neurobiologically heterogeneous categorical phenotypes. Investigating neurobiological response patterns associated with fear processing as an intermediate phenotype might aid in overcoming these difficulties. The existing imaging literature on the neurobiological correlates of fear processing and anxiety disorders points to a pivotal role of the amygd

Wilson's disease.

Wilson's disease (WD), an inborn error of copper (Cu) metabolism, is now one of the leading liver diseases in children in India. The clinical presentation can be extremely varied viz.,--all forms of acute and chronic liver disease, minimal to severe neurological disease, psychiatric problems, bony deformities, hemolytic anemia and endocrine manifestations. A high index of suspicion is necessary along with a judicious battery of investigations for diagnosis. Hepatic copper estimation is the most reliable test but is not easily available in India. Liver biopsy may not be possible because of blee

CT measurement of medial temporal lobe atrophy in Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, depression and paraphrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Measurement of medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTL) by computerised tomography (CT) may be a useful adjunct to the diagnosis of AD. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and diagnostic accuracy of CT measurement of MTL thickness for patients with probable AD, compared with a 'diseased' control group, and to correlate the measure with neuropsychological test scores. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: One hundred subjects were prospectively recruited: 60 with probable AD (mean age 73.7 years, mean Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] 19.6),

Optimizing treatment with clozapine.

Clozapine is the only antipsychotic agent that is effective in treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Despite its superior efficacy to chlorpromazine and the fact that it has fewer extrapyramidal side effects than conventional antipsychotics do, clozapine is relatively underused. This may be due in part to a lack of appreciation of clozapine's favorable risk-benefit ratio in many patients. In addition, clozapine is only indicated for use in patients who fail to respond adequately to standard antipsychotic treatment. Treatment with clozapine considerably improves psychiatric well-being and reduces

[A social study of a group of depressed patients recovering in a private clinic].

Depression is a widespread illness in Sardinia and is treated mainly in private clinics which accept National Health patients. The aim of the present study was to evidence socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of depressed subjects who turn to these clinics. Furthermore we will examine the reason which led to the choice of a private clinic on the basis of services provided by the same, of those available in public hospitals and of patients' psychopathological history and socioeconomic characteristics. We examined 122 depressed patients who had been admitted to a private clinic in Cagl

Modeling a linkage between blood transcriptional expression and activity in brain regions to infer the phenotype of schizophrenia patients.

UNLABELLED: Hundreds of genetic loci participate to schizophrenia liability. It is also known that impaired cerebral connectivity is directly related to the cognitive and affective disturbances in schizophrenia. How genetic susceptibility and brain neural networks interact to specify a pathological phenotype in schizophrenia remains elusive. Imaging genetics, highlighting brain variations, has proven effective to establish links between vulnerability loci and associated clinical traits. As previous imaging genetics works in schizophrenia have essentially focused on structural DNA variants, the

Dysphoria Dimensional Model for Feeding And Eating Disorders: a Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are severe psychiatric illnesses which represent the main expression of Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED). Clinicians agree that emotional and behavioural dysregulation play a crucial role in FED. Dysphoria could help us to better understand these components. Indeed, we define dysphoria as a generic state of dissatisfaction and emotional instability, without any specific features. Among the multitude of symptoms, we find that irritability, discontent, interpersonal resentment and surrender prevail. These d

[An Adult Case of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome with Congenital Abnormalities and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Which Remained Undiagnosed Until Presentation of Auditory Hallucinations].

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS) is characterized by cardiac defects, abnormal facial features, thymic hypoplasia, cleft palate, and hypocalcemia, including DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), and conotruncal anomaly face (CTAF) syndrome. Psychiatric symptoms were recently shown to be very common in patients with 22q11.2 DS, prompting greater interest in this syndrome. Early diagnosis during childhood based on a con- stellation of physical features is optimal ; however, as some patients remain undiagnosed until the presentation of other symptoms in adult life, psyc

Post-traumatic stress disorder in women with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia, are heterogeneous entities with a major socioeconomic burden. Multimodal treatment programmes have shown greater efficacy than conventional approaches for these patients, at least in the short term. A profound understanding of chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome patients treated in multimodal treatment programmes is important for their development and to provide insight into these conditions. AIM: To provide a comprehensive and objective description of medical, psychosocial and sleep characteristics of the treatment

Evidence for Digital Mental Health Assessment Tools in the Post-COVID-19 Era: Protocol for a Systematic Review on Diagnostic Accuracy Across Age Groups.

BACKGROUND: Digital assessment tools in health care are increasingly used to aid clinicians in diagnosing mental health conditions. Particularly since the quarantine and isolation guidelines of the COVID-19 pandemic moved much of health care online, there has been an accelerated adoption of digital assessment tools. The diagnostic accuracy of digital mental health assessment tools for a range of psychiatric conditions has yet to be fully explored, especially for their use in populations of older adults and children. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to (1) summarize recent studies on dig

Psychiatric and neurological predictors of early ADHD medication discontinuation across the lifespan: a multinational study.

BACKGROUND: Early discontinuation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is common and linked to worse outcomes. Identifying clinical predictors could aid personalised treatment yet evidence is inconsistent across ages and countries/regions. OBJECTIVE: Investigate psychiatric and neurological comorbidity as predictors of early ADHD medication discontinuation in new ADHD medication users across age groups, sex and countries/regions. METHODS: Using health records from eight countries/regions, we identified 1 000 411 (44% female) new ADHD medication users (2011-2020). Dis
