Digital Compassion: Unveiling Factors Behind Chinese Netizens' Responses to Support-Seeking About Depression.

This survey study (N = 446) examined the influence of various culturally sensitive factors - personal stigma, empathy, communication style, and self-construal - on the quality of supportive messages Chinese individuals provide (measured by interaction involvement, reciprocal self-disclosure, person-centeredness, and politeness) in response to online posts seeking help for depression. Also, we examined the role of self-construal and communication style as moderators in moderating the effect of personal stigma and empathy on the quality of support messages. Results showed that higher levels of p

The effects of partner togetherness on salivary testosterone in women in long distance relationships.

The present study examined whether women's testosterone levels are influenced by being with a sexual and romantic partner after a period of sexual abstinence. Women in long distance relationships (n=15) provided five saliva samples: at least 1 week before seeing their partner (and at least 2 weeks since their last visit), the day before seeing their partner, when they were with their partner but prior to engaging in sexual activity, the day after their first sexual activity, and 3 days after they were separated from their partners. Salivary testosterone was lowest when participants had been aw

Patterns of dysphoria in a Puerto Rican urban community.

This study was undertaken to explore the prevalence of perceived dysphoria in a poor, urban, predominantly Puerto Rican community. A cross-sectional sample of 704 adult respondents were asked a single validated question, with a five-item Likert scale response, about their level of perceived dysphoria. Chi-squared analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficients were used to assess the association of level of dysphoria with social characteristics, barriers to health care, health status, and substance use. Linear regression modeling was used to control for confounding variables. Twenty percent o

Long-Term Neurocognitive and Psychosocial Outcomes After Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Childhood Cancer Survivor Study Report.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are vulnerable to medical late effects of treatment; however, less is known about their psychosocial outcomes. This study evaluated neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in long-term AML survivors treated with bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or intensive chemotherapy (IC) without BMT. METHODS: AML survivors (N = 482; median age at diagnosis = 8 [range = 0-20] years; median age at evaluation = 30 [range = 18-49] years) treated with BMT (n = 183) or IC (n = 299) and sibling controls (N = 3190; median age at evaluation = 32 [ra

Patient and physician global assessments capture distinct clinical domains in axial spondyloarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Patient global (PtGA) and physician global (PhGA) assessments are key components of disease evaluation in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Although commonly used in composite indices, these measures are often interpreted as interchangeable indicators of disease activity. It remains unclear whether PtGA and PhGA reflect overlapping or distinct clinical domains. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 155 patients fulfilling the modified New York criteria, with ASAS classification criteria additionally recorded, were included. All patients had radiographic and MRI-confirmed sacroili

Cluster analysis unveils a severe persistent respiratory impairment phenotype 3-months after severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The mid-term respiratory sequelae in survivors of severe COVID-19 appear highly heterogeneous. In addition, factors associated with respiratory sequelae are not known. In this monocentric prospective study, we performed a multidisciplinary assessment for respiratory and muscular impairment and psychological distress 3 months after severe COVID-19. We analysed factors associated with severe persistent respiratory impairment, amongst demographic, COVID-19 severity, and 3-month assessment. METHODS: Patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia requiring ≥ 4L/min were included for a syste

Symptom Clusters in People Living with HIV Attending Five Palliative Care Facilities in Two Sub-Saharan African Countries: A Hierarchical Cluster Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Symptom research across conditions has historically focused on single symptoms, and the burden of multiple symptoms and their interactions has been relatively neglected especially in people living with HIV. Symptom cluster studies are required to set priorities in treatment planning, and to lessen the total symptom burden. This study aimed to identify and compare symptom clusters among people living with HIV attending five palliative care facilities in two sub-Saharan African countries. METHODS: Data from cross-sectional self-report of seven-day symptom prevalence on the 32-item M

The impact of biopsychosocial factors on quality of life: women with primary biliary cirrhosis on waiting list and post liver transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is the second most common reason for liver transplants among women in the USA. While survival rates are high, there is evidence of persistent problems post-transplant. This study aimed to identify significant contributors to quality of life (QOL) for women with PBC on waiting list (WL) and post-transplant (PT) and compare QOL in each group with US population norms. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, two-group study design was used. METHODS: WL and PT participants were recruited through medical centres and on-line. QOL was measured by the Short Form-36 and

Do Hostile School Environments Promote Social Deviance by Shaping Neural Responses to Social Exclusion?

The present study examined adolescents' neural responses to social exclusion as a mediator of past exposure to a hostile school environment (HSE) and later social deviance, and whether family connectedness buffered these associations. Participants (166 Mexican-origin adolescents, 54.4% female) reported on their HSE exposure and family connectedness across Grades 9-11. Six months later, neural responses to social exclusion were measured. Finally, social deviance was self-reported in Grades 9 and 12. The HSE-social deviance link was mediated by greater reactivity to social deviance in subgenual

The influence of stigma on first aid actions taken by young people for mental health problems in a close friend or family member: findings from an Australian national survey of youth.

BACKGROUND: Young people are an important source of first aid for mental health problems in people they are close to, but their first aid skills remain inadequate. Research into the factors that influence mental health first aid skills are required to reveal targets for improving these skills. This study examined the influence of stigma on first aid actions taken by young people to help someone close to them with a mental health problem. METHODS: Participants in a national telephone survey of Australian youth (aged 12-25 years) reported on their stigmatising attitudes based on one of three di

"Out of sight": Sexuality and women with enduring mental illness.

Sexuality is a complex and fundamental aspect of a person's health and mental well-being, yet mental health professionals generally seem reluctant to discuss sexuality related issues and few research studies have specifically explored the sexuality of women with enduring mental illness. The aim of this qualitative research was to gain a deeper understanding about the sexuality experiences of this group of women. Eight women were interviewed individually, and then together as a focus group. Working from a feminist theoretical perspective, the interview transcripts were analysed thematically. Al

The association between attachment style, social mentalities, and paranoid ideation: an analogue study.

OBJECTIVES: The study was a novel exploration of possible associations between attachment status and psychotic phenomenology, applied within a social mentality framework (Gilbert, 1989, 2001). We hypothesized that attachment avoidance would be associated with higher endorsement of paranoid ideation. Consistent with social mentality theory, we hypothesized that higher levels of interpersonal problems would also be associated with higher paranoia scores and greater attachment avoidance. DESIGN: An analogue cross-sectional cohort design was used. METHODS: Two hundred and thirteen individuals co
