Local variations in L/M ratio influence the detection and color naming of small spots.

The distribution of long (L)-, middle (M)-, and short (S)-wavelength sensitive cones in the retina determines how different frequencies of i … lihood of eliciting a chromatic percept. Our detection data confirm earlier reports that small spot psychophysics can reveal information about local cone topography, and our color naming findings suggest that chromatic sensitivity may improve when the L/M ratio approaches unity.

Imperfect transparency and camouflage in glass frogs.

Camouflage patterns prevent detection and/or recognition by matching the background, disrupting edges, or mimicking particular background fe … transparency acts as camouflage, we used in situ behavioral trials, visual modeling, and laboratory psychophysics. We found that the perceived luminance of the frogs changed depending on the immediate background, lowering detectability and increasing survival when compared to opaque frogs. Moreover, this change was greatest for the legs, which surround the body …

Hierarchical neurocomputations underlying concurrent sound segregation: connecting periphery to percept.

Natural soundscapes often contain multiple sound sources at any given time. Numerous studies have reported that in human observers, the perception and identification of concurrent sounds is paralleled by specific changes in cortical event-related potentials (ERPs). Although these studies provide a window into the cerebral mechanisms governing sound segregation, little is known about the subcortical neural architecture and hierarchy of neurocomputations that lead to this robust perceptual process. Using computational modeling, scalp-recorded brainstem/cortical ERPs, and human psychophysics, we …

Inhibitory and facilitatory location priming in patients with left-sided visual hemi-neglect.

In visual search for pop-out targets, reaction times are facilitated when the target on the current trial appears at a previous target location, and inhibited when it appears at a previous distractor location, relative to when it appears at a previously empty (neutral) location (Maljkovic and Nakayama, Perception and Psychophysics 58:977-991, 1996). However, while normal subjects are able to positively/negatively tag selected target/rejected distractor locations to guide search on the next trial, patients with visual hemi-neglect may have a (uni- or bilateral) deficit in these functions that m…

Shape-similarity gain: A selection profile for simple objects.

Recent research has examined the selection profile-the pattern of enhancement and suppression of stimuli when allocating attention to a specific feature value. Support for several different selection profiles for simple feature dimensions (e.g., color, orientation) have been identified such as the feature-similarity gain and surround suppression effects. However, it is unclear whether the selection profile for more complex stimuli follows a similar pattern. Using a recently developed circular shape space, the current study assessed the selection profile for these simple shapes as an initial st

Apparent-length expansion in whole contours and isolated parts: evidence for configuration-dependent processing.

The visual system overestimates the length of structured contours relative to adjacent empty intervals of the same physical size. This study examined whether apparent-length expansion occurs across isolated contour parts as well as complete objects, and whether the expansion of the whole can be predicted from that of its components. Observers matched the perceived horizontal extent of complete pentagons, incomplete pentagons with one or two missing segments, isolated apices, pedestals, parallel line pairs, and rectangles using an adjustment method. All stimulus types produced consistent positi

An elasticity-curvature illusion decouples cutaneous and proprioceptive cues in active exploration of soft objects.

Our sense of touch helps us encounter the richness of our natural world. Across a myriad of contexts and repetitions, we have learned to deploy certain exploratory movements in order to elicit perceptual cues that are salient and efficient. The task of identifying optimal exploration strategies and somatosensory cues that underlie our softness perception remains relevant and incomplete. Leveraging psychophysical evaluations combined with computational finite element modeling of skin contact mechanics, we investigate an illusion phenomenon in exploring softness; where small-compliant and large-

Speed and the coherence of superimposed chromatic gratings.

On the basis of measurements of the perceived coherence of superimposed drifting gratings, Krauskopf and Farell (1990) proposed that motion is analysed independently in different chromatic channels. They found that two gratings appeared to slip if each modulated one of the two 'cardinal' color mechanisms S/(L+M) and L/(L+M). If the gratings were defined along intermediate color directions, observers reported a plaid, moving coherently. We hypothesised that slippage might occur in chromatic gratings if the motion signal from the S/(L+M) channel is weak and equivalent to a lower speed. We asked

Possible functions of contextual modulations and receptive field nonlinearities: pop-out and texture segmentation.

When analyzing a visual image, the brain has to achieve several goals quickly. One crucial goal is to rapidly detect parts of the visual scene that might be behaviorally relevant, while another one is to segment the image into objects, to enable an internal representation of the world. Both of these processes can be driven by local variations in any of several image attributes such as luminance, color, and texture. Here, focusing on texture defined by local orientation, we propose that the two processes are mediated by separate mechanisms that function in parallel. More specifically, differenc

Observer movement and size constancy.

It is commonly assumed that size constancy-invariance of perceived size of objects as they change retinal size because of changes in distance-depends solely on retinal stimulation and vergence, but on no other action-related signals. Distance to an object can change through displacement of either the observer or the object. The common assumption predicts that the two types of displacement should lead to the same degree of size constancy. We measured size constancy while observers viewed stationary stimuli at different distances. Changes in distance between trials were either actively produced

Threshold tuning curves of chinchilla auditory-nerve fibers. I. Dependence on characteristic frequency and relation to the magnitudes of cochlear vibrations.

Frequency-threshold tuning curves were recorded in thousands of auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) in chinchilla. Synthetic tuning curves with 21 characteristic frequencies (187 Hz to 19.04 kHz, spaced every 1/3 octave) were constructed by averaging individual tuning curves within 2/3-octave frequency bands. Tuning curves undergo a gradual transition in symmetry at characteristic frequencies (CFs) of 1 kHz and an abrupt change in shape at CFs of 3-4 kHz. For CFs < or = 3 kHz, the lower limbs of tuning curves have similar slopes, about -18 dB/octave, but the upper limbs have slopes that become increa

An examination of worry in relation to anxious responding to voluntary hyperventilation among adolescents.

This study examined the association between worry and fearful responding to a 3-min voluntary hyperventilation procedure. Participants were 160 adolescents (71 females) between the ages of 12 and 17 years (M=14.92 years). After accounting for the significant effects of state anxiety and anxiety sensitivity, results indicated that pre-challenge levels of worry indexed by the Penn State Worry Questionnaire-Child Version predicted post-challenge anxiety and intensity of panic symptoms. Results are discussed in terms of the role of worry in relation to panic-relevant emotional vulnerability among

The effect of script on poor readers' sensitivity to dynamic visual stimuli.

The current research examined performance of good and poor readers of Thai on two tasks that assess sensitivity to dynamic visual displays. Readers of Thai, a complex alphabetic script that nonetheless has a regular orthography, were chosen in order to contrast patterns of performance with readers of Korean Hangul (a similarly regular language but one that has a simple visual format, see ). Thai poor readers were less sensitive than good readers on the two measures of dynamic visual processing; they had higher thresholds for detecting coherent movement and required longer ISIs to report group

Path perception and Filehne illusion compared: model and data.

Pursuit eye movements introduce retinal motion that complicates the recovery of self-motion from retinal flow. An extra-retinal, eye-velocity signal could be used to aid estimation of the observer's path, perhaps by converting retino-centric into head-centric motion. This conversion is apparently not precise because we often misperceive head-centric object velocity: in the Filehne illusion, for example, a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to the eye movement. Similar errors should be expected when extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals are used in self-motion tasks. Howe

Photoreceptor orientation in iris coloboma.

PURPOSE: Investigate photoreceptor orientation and alignment in an observer with a simple coloboma of the iris and no retinal involvement. METHOD: Using a psychophysical procedure, extensive measurements of the Stiles-Crawford functions of the first kind (SCE I) were obtained from this observer. RESULTS: In this observer, the usual center-of-the-exit-pupil-of-the-eye alignment tendency of photoreceptors (inferred from the peaks of the SCE I functions) is absent. The inferred orientation of photoreceptors at numerous retinal loci tested lies outside the pupil, opposite the direction of the do

Absence of compensation and reasoning-like processes in the perception of orientation in depth.

When errors are present in the perceived depth between the parts of a physically stationary object, the object appears to rotate as the head is moved laterally (Gogel, 1980). This illusory rotation has been attributed either to compensation (Wallach, 1985, 1987) or to inferential-like processes (Rock, 1983). Alternatively, the perceived distances of and directions to the parts of the object are sufficient to explain the illusory perceived orientations and perceived rotations of the stimulus. This was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, a perceived illusory orientation of a stimulus

Estimating Change in Tremor Amplitude Using Clinical Ratings: Recommendations for Clinical Trials.

Tremor rating scales are the standard method for assessing tremor severity and clinical change due to treatment or disease progression. Howe … α ≈ 0.5, β ≈ -2, and log is base 10. This relationship is consistent with the Weber-Fechner law of psychophysics, and from this equation, the fractional change in tremor amplitude for a given change in clinical ratings is derived: (Tf-Ti)/Ti=10α(Rf-(Ri)-1, where the subscripts i and f refer to the initial and final values. For a 0-4 scale and α  =  0.5, a 1-po …

Spatial cueing deficits in dyslexia reflect generalised difficulties with attentional selection.

Traditionally, explanations of spatial cueing effects posit the operation of orienting mechanisms that act to reposition the spatial locus of attention. This process is often viewed to be analogous to the movement of an attentional 'spotlight' across the visual field to the cued region and is thought to occur either in an exogenous or endogenous manner, depending on the nature of the cue. In line with this view, anomalous findings in dyslexic groups using paradigms involving brief peripheral cues have been interpreted as evidence for a particular deficiency with stimulus-driven, exogenous orie
