Adult psychosocial outcomes in long-term survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and Wilms' tumour: a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Variability in methods and deficits in design have contributed to conflicting findings about adult psychosocial functioning after childhood cancer. We did a controlled study of psychosocial outcomes in adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and Wilms' tumour to address previous methods limitations. METHODS: We assessed 102 survivors of childhood ALL and Wilms' tumour, who had been free from relapse for 5 years and were aged 19-30 years, and 102 unrelated healthy controls. We used standard measures of adult psychiatric disorder, interpersonal and social-ro…

Metacognition and Self-Disturbances in Schizophrenia: Implications for Psychological and Neurocognitive Therapy.

Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms, as well as disturbances of the self and metacognitive dysfunction. Increasing evidence suggests that these dimensions contribute substantially to psychosocial functioning and recovery, yet they are often investigated separately. This narrative review aims to integrate current knowledge on self-disturbances and metacognition in schizophrenia and discuss their relevance for contemporary therapeutic approaches. This review proposes an integrative conceptual framework…

Co-occurring Chronic Pain and PTSD Among US Military Veterans: Prevalence, Correlates, and Functioning.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of co-occurring chronic pain and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has yet to be established in a nationally representative sample of US veterans, and little is known about the individual contributing roles of these disorders to the psychiatric and functional burden of this comorbidity. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of chronic pain, PTSD, and co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD, and psychiatric comorbidities and psychosocial functioning in these groups. DESIGN: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a…

May Spasticity-Related Unpleasant Sensations Interfere with Daily Activities in People with Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury? Secondary Analysis from the CORTOX Study.

Background/Objectives: This study examined the impact of spasticity-related unpleasant sensations (pain, heaviness, stiffness) on various domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and psychosocial well-being in individuals affected by stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). The primary aim is to explore how these sensations affect daily activities, participation, and overall quality of life, guided by the comprehensive framework of the ICF. Methods: Utilizing a secondary analysis of data from a cohort undergoing Botulinum toxin type-A treatment fo

Longitudinal Course of Physical and Psychosocial Impairment in Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder and Personality-Disordered Comparison Subjects: Description and Prediction.

This study describes the 8-year course of physical and psychosocial impairment in middle-aged patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other personality disorders (OPD). This study also compares BPD subgroups (recovered vs. nonrecovered) and explores predictors of physical impairment. Patients (N = 282) were assessed as part of the McLean Study of Adult Development. Physical and psychosocial impairments were assessed using the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Patients with BPD reported significantly more impairment than OPD patients across all domains. Nonrecovered BPD patients

Feasibility of conducting long-term follow-up of children and infants treated for CNS tumors on the same cooperative group clinical trial protocol.

Given the barriers to conducting long-term assessment of neurocognitive and psychosocial functioning of those treated in infancy for central nervous system (CNS) tumors, a multi-site feasibility study was conducted. The primary objective was to demonstrate that it is feasible to identify, locate and assess the functioning of children treated on the same protocol 10-years post-treatment. Six sites obtained institutional approval, identified and recruited subjects, and obtained comprehensive neurocognitive and psychosocial data. All feasibility objectives were met. Barriers to participation incl…

Predictors of change in functional competence and functional behavior after functional adaptation skills training for schizophrenia.

Functional recovery is an important treatment target in schizophrenia. Although medication is effective at reducing positive symptoms of the disorder, these improvements do not translate to improved functioning. In this study, schizophrenia outpatients (N = 54) received the psychosocial treatment Functional Adaptation Skills Training. Hierarchical regression analyses determined whether baseline neurocognitive, symptom, course of illness, and demographic variables predicted improvement in performance-based measures of functional competence and case manager-rated real-world behavior after the in

Offender characteristics in lethal violence with special reference to antisocial and autistic personality traits.

The objective of the study is to assess the relationships between personality traits, lifetime psychosocial functioning, and crime scene behavior. Thirty-five male offenders referred for forensic psychiatric assessment in Sweden (1996-2001) and assigned a main diagnosis of either antisocial personality disorder (APD) or autism spectrum disorder (AUT) were retrospectively studied. APD were subcategorized into impulsive (APDi) and controlled (APDc). Those in the AUT group were less intoxicated at the time of the crime and did not often use knives or guns compared to the APD group. Males in the A…

Diagnosis and Management of Eating Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Eating disorders (EDs) are characterized by persistent disturbance of eating behavior that impairs health or psychosocial functioning. ED can persist for decades resulting in substantial burdens and psychosocial impairments. An increased prevalence of anorexia nervosa was noted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a worsening trend in risky eating behavior among US college students, only 22% of colleges report offering year-round ED screening opportunities with 45% offering ED screenings once per year or semester. Furthermore, 20% or less of those who screened positive, received treatment.

Living with FSHD: a patient-led narrative review of psychosocial well-being in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is associated with substantial psychosocial challenges not fully captured by traditional biomedical outcomes, including challenges that may persist despite stable clinical or QoL scores. This patient-led narrative review synthesizes and reinterprets the literature on psychosocial well-being in FSHD through a lived-experience lens to highlight patient-prioritized concerns. Qualitative and quantitative studies measuring psychosocial well-being were included. The synthesis identified five interrelated themes characterizing the included papers: (1) sym
