Strengthening rural pandemic preparedness: Lessons from Nova Scotia's COVID-19 response for pharmacy practice.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed longstanding structural inequities in rural health care systems, including shortages of primary care providers, transportation barriers, geographic isolation, workforce limitations, and unequal access to digital health technologies. Rather than creating these challenges, the pandemic magnified existing weaknesses that limited equitable access to testing, vaccination, chronic disease management, and preventive health care. Nova Scotia provides an informative Public Health Mobile Units (PHMU) implementation of how innovative, community-based models of care can mitig

Perceptions and behavioral responses of the general public during the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic: a systematic review.

The public plays an important role in controlling the spread of a virus by adopting preventive measures. This systematic literature review aimed to gain insight into public perceptions and behavioral responses to the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, with a focus on trends over time and regional differences. We screened 5498 articles and identified 70 eligible studies from PubMed, Embase, and PsychINFO. Public misconceptions were apparent regarding modes of transmission and preventive measures. Perceptions and behaviors evolved during the pandemic. In most countries, perceived vulnerability in

Sexually transmitted infections treatment and care available to high risk populations in Pakistan.

Limited literature exists on the quality and availability of treatment and care of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Pakistan. This article aims to document existing services for the care and treatment of STIs available in Pakistan's public and private sectors to high risk groups (HRG), particularly the transgendered population. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to document STI services in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Quetta. Seventy-three interviews were administered with health service providers at the 3 largest public sector hospitals in each city, as well as with

Slow public health: a temporal-relational framework for migration and aging in the Global South.

Population aging and migration represent two of the most profound demographic transformations shaping the Global South. Conventional public health approaches have typically relied on standardized interventions and measurable outcomes, yet such frameworks often fail to capture the temporal, relational, and contextual dimensions affecting aging populations. This perspective introduces "Slow Public Health" as a temporal-relational framework for public health practice in migration and aging contexts. Building on the Slow Movement, Slow Medicine, life-course thinking, and asset-based community deve…

CDC Grand Rounds: preventing hospital-associated venous thromboembolism.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a large vein, usually in the leg or pelvis. Sometimes a DVT detaches from the site of formation and becomes mobile in the blood stream. If the circulating clot moves through the heart to the lungs it can block an artery supplying blood to the lungs. This condition is called pulmonary embolism. The disease process that includes DVT and/or pulmonary embolism is called venous thromboembolism (VTE). Each year in the United States, an estimated 350,000-900,000 persons develop incident VTE, of whom approximately 100,000 die, mostly as sudden deaths, th

Bioterrorism: an overview.

How real is the threat of bioterrorism? Experts may disagree on the likelihood of use, but the possibility cannot be totally dismissed. Complacent ignorance of a low-probability, high-cost risk is dangerous and can result in devastating global consequences. This is a US government work. There are no restrictions on its use.

The role of neurosurgeons in global public health: the case of folic acid fortification of staple foods to prevent spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: The global neurosurgery movement arose at the crossroads of unmet neurosurgical needs and public health to address the global burden of neurosurgical disease. The case of folic acid fortification (FAF) of staple foods for the prevention of spina bifida and anencephaly (SBA) represents an example of a new neurosurgical paradigm focused on public health intervention in addition to the treatment of individual cases. Heat Illnesses in the Emergency Department: A Hot Topic.

The RESEARCH TO PRACTICE column is intended to improve the research critique skills of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and to assist with the translation of research into practice. For each column, a topic and a particular research study are selected. The stage is set with a case presentation. The research article is then reviewed and critiqued, and the findings are discussed in relation to the case presented. Our current column discusses factors associated with heat-related hospitalizations and deaths with implications for APRN practice and public health prevention strategies us

Epidemiological Analysis of 37,424 Carotid Artery Stenosis Intervention Procedures During 11 Years in the Public Health System in Brazil: Stenting has Been More Common Than Endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide, with carotid atherosclerosis accounting for 10-20% of cases. In Brazil, the Public Health System provides care for roughly two-thirds of the population. No studies, however, have analysed large-scale results of carotid bifurcation surgery in Brazil. METHODS: This study aimed to describe rates of carotid artery stenting (CAS) and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) performed between 2008 and 2019 in the country through web scraping of publicly available databases. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2019, 37,424 carotid bifurcation revascularization pr
