Academic medicine continues to characterize the experiences of Black and other minoritized faculty in medicine to enhance their careers and promote their advancement. An issue of discussion is tenure and its role in the advancement and retention of this group. Tenure is a sign of national presence, command of an area of study, and can demonstrate support from the institution in terms of permanent employment, eligibility to apply for awards, sit or vote on certain committees or qualify for certain leadership opportunities. Anecdotally there have been reports that tenure is a thing of the past t

BACKGROUND: The public health literature has established a relationship between discrimination, health outcomes, and health and well-being in adolescence. The objective of this study is to add vaping to the existing studies on discrimination and tobacco use among youth. To achieve this objective, the analysis examined the relationship between discrimination, type of discrimination, and current tobacco use, including current vape use, among adolescents in California.
METHODS: This study uses data from the 2023 California Youth Tobacco Survey, which was administered to a representative sample o

OBJECTIVE: Cardiothoracic surgery lacks racial diversity. Attracting the best candidates requires valuing diversity and advancing a recruitment process that minimizes racial bias. Implicit bias in recommendation letters has been identified as an influential mechanism for lack of diversity in cardiothoracic surgery. We aim to investigate how applicant race impacts language used in cardiothoracic surgery fellowship recommendation letters.
METHODS: We examined applications to an accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program between 2017 and 2021. Recommendation letter authors were categor

We assess racial disparities in the service quality of app-based ride-hailing services, like Uber and Lyft, by simulating their operations in the city of Chicago using empirical data. To generate driver cancellation rate disparities consistent with controlled experiments (up to twice as large for Black riders as for White riders), we estimate that more than 3% of drivers discriminate by race. We find that the capabilities of ride-hailing technology to rapidly rematch after a cancellation and prioritize long-waiting customers heavily mitigates the effects of driver discrimination on rider wait

Discrimination can contribute to adverse mental health outcomes among individuals in romantic partnerships. However, research has yet to examine how differences in partner race/ethnicity can shape the link between gendered racial microaggressions, an intersectional form of discrimination, and depressive symptoms among Asian American women. Accordingly, we assessed the link between gendered racial microaggressions and depressive symptoms, and whether partner race/ethnicity (White vs. Asian) moderated the link. Using a sample of 156 Asian American women (Mage = 26.5, SD = 5.33), we conducted mul

INTRODUCTION: Racial/ethnic discrimination (hereafter, discrimination) is associated with tobacco use. However, little is known about the relationship between discrimination and dual/polytobacco use and tobacco use disorder (TUD), including how these relationships vary by race/ethnicity.
METHODS: Data on adults 18 and older come from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 35,881). Past-year discrimination was measured using the Experiences of Discrimination scale. Past 30-day exclusive, dual, and polytobacco use was measured as the mutually excl

The current study extends research on the detrimental health implications of racial discrimination by examining how these implications reverberate across romantic relationships. Using two generations of different-gender romantic couples from the Family and Community Health Study, we examined how racial discrimination experienced by a romantic partner was associated with poor health among Black adults, independent of one's own level of racial discrimination. Results from the actor-partner interdependence model showed that beyond the effects of socioeconomic status, health behavior, relationship

OBJECTIVE: Examining well-being in the face of racial trauma is timely, clinically significant, and severely understudied, especially in Black populations. To address this gap, we investigated the relationship between flourishing and posttraumatic growth among Black undergraduates who reported a history of racial trauma.
METHOD: Participants were 96 Black college students recruited from a predominantly White Midwestern university, all of whom reported experience of racial trauma. Participants completed the Flourishing Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) in an online survey. Most w

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that antiimmigrant policies enacted in the United States, magnified during the 2016-2020 period, propagate widespread trauma across communities of immigrants (von Werthern et al., 2018). While these policies harm all groups of immigrants, structural conditions (e.g., lack of documentation status, race, ethnicity, country of origin, and other social and legal determinants) shape how they are experienced. To address the widespread traumatic harm inflicted by racist and xenophobic policies, a group of leaders from eight Divisions of the American Psychological Associat

INTRODUCTION: Racial discrimination has been consistently linked to various health outcomes and health disparities, including studies associating racial discrimination with patterns of racial disparities in adverse pregnancy outcomes. To expand our knowledge, this systematic review and meta-analysis assesses all available evidence on the association between self-reported racial discrimination and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: Eight electronic databases were searched without language or time restrictions, through January 2022. Data were extracted using a pre-piloted extraction tool. Qua

The human sciences have witnessed a decades-long transition from an emphasis on theories centered on hermeneutics and the interpretation of meaning to a preoccupation with theories that privilege performance, action, and being/becoming. This essay develops out of the conceptual orientation of William James, which holds that all knowledge comes from experience, as well as the author's writings on what matters most to participants in local worlds. The essay shows how meaning and being/becoming are unified in moral life and understood as embodied and lived experiences of care and caregiving, and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Greater racial discrimination is associated with poorer mental health among Black Americans; yet, there remains an incomplete understanding of sex differences in exposure to racial discrimination, and further, of how sex differences in coping with racial discrimination may heighten or diminish risk for poorer mental health.
RECENT FINDINGS: Black men may experience greater exposure to both structural and communal forms of racial discrimination, whereas Black women may face both a wider range of potential sources, as well as encounter greater variability in the subjective ex

This paper focuses on the affective economies which materialize around race, sexuality and queerness in the British context to enable the production and mobilization of an exceptionalist discourse of gay-friendly and post-homophobic Britain (i.e., pinkwashing). The author investigates the discursive workings of pinkwashing coupled with the racialization of homophobia, through a critical reading of the BBC Two documentary Out There (2013a), written and narrated by British gay-identified writer, activist and artist, Stephen Fry. The documentary captures and is in fact captured within a global mo

IMPORTANCE: Structural racism in the US is evidenced in the discriminatory practice of historical racial redlining when neighborhoods were valued, in part, based on the community's racial and ethnic compositions. However, the influence of these systemic practices in the context of the HIV epidemic is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of redlining on time to viral suppression among people newly diagnosed with HIV.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Observational study that included individuals diagnosed with HIV from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2019, in New Orleans, Lo…

BACKGROUND: This study estimated ethnoracial inequalities in maternal and congenital syphilis in Brazil, understanding race as a relational category product of a sociopolitical construct that functions as an essential tool of racism and its manifestations.
METHODS: We linked routinely collected data from Jan 1, 2012 to Dec 31, 2017 to conduct a population-based study in Brazil. We estimated the attributable fraction of race (skin colour) for the entire population and specific subgroups compared with White women using adjusted logistic regression. We also obtained the attributable fraction of …

Weight-inclusive interventions offer a promising alternative to traditional weight-centric approaches that focus primarily on weight loss. Black women, who are disproportionately classified as having obesity based on body mass index (BMI) criteria, often face limited success and added stigma from weight-focused models, which overlook the complex biological, social, and structural factors affecting health, as well as intersecting oppressions like racism, sexism, and weight bias. This article examines how cultural norms, body image, and systemic barriers shape health behaviors among Black women …

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a congenital, life-limiting illness that affects millions worldwide. It carries a high symptom burden and decreased quality of life. Although disease-modifying and even potentially curative therapies have recently emerged, significant tradeoffs and inequitable access remain. Opioids are the mainstay for acute pain but do not adequately address chronic pain syndromes that many people with SCD face. Additionally, individuals with SCD encounter emotional and psychosocial challenges, compounded by biases and structural racism within and outside the health care system. …
