[Radiation dose measurement of the patient in interventional radiology using a transmission ionization chamber].

We propose a method to estimate patient radiation dose in radiologically guided interventional procedures using a transmission ionization chamber. A typical transarterial embolization (TAE) procedure for hepatocellular carcinoma was simulated, including 30 minutes of fluoroscopy and five series of DSA, each with appropriate collimation. The dose-area product was divided by the area and compared with values from a standard dosimeter placed in the center of the radiation entrance, to obtain a conversion factor. In this way, the entrance skin dose can be estimated immediately after the procedure

Characterization of radiation-induced thymine-tyrosine crosslinks by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Exposure to ionizing radiation leads to formation of covalent crosslinks between DNA and proteins. The nature, extent and site of the modifications are not well understood due to the difficulty in assessing free radical-induced damage in biopolymers. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) permits direct analyses of intact oligopeptides, permitting characterization of the radiation-induced DNA-protein covalently crosslinked constituents. Our first application of this methodology to free radical-induced damage was in a model system where angiotensin, a small 10-amino acid peptide, is

The acute effects of ionizing radiation on DNA synthesis and the development of antibody-producing cells.

Ionizing radiation inhibited the development of specific haemolysin-producing cells (PFC) and depressed the incorporation of (3H) thymidine by rabbit spleen explants responding to SRC in the culture medium. In contrast to these effects, the rates of incorporation of precursors for protein and RNA synthesis were much less affected. The depression of (3H) thymidine incorporation was found to result from a quantitative reduction of new DNA synthesis, without any change in the proportion of labelled cells, at any time after irradiation. The DNA synthesis occurring in these cells preparing to devel

Microstructural and chemical characterization of radiation-induced carious dentin of teeth submitted to ionizing radiation as a head and neck cancer therapy.

Radiation-induced caries is a common side effect of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer caused by pulpal hypovascularization and dentin collagen degradation by the direct action of ionizing radiation. A thorough understanding of radiation-induced changes in dental structure can lead to more effective and durable restorative treatments. The objective of this study was to analyze the microstructure and chemical composition of radiation-induced carious dentin (CD) compared with irradiated (ID) and sound dentin (SD) by using analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), en

An In-depth Analysis of the Adverse Effects of Ionizing Radiation Exposure on Cardiac Catheterization Staffs.

Diagnostic and interventional angiograms are instrumental in the multidisciplinary approach to CAD management, enabling accurate diagnosis and effective targeted treatments that significantly enhance patient care and cardiovascular outcomes. However, cath lab staff, including interventional cardiologists, is consistently exposed to ionizing radiation, which poses inherent health risks. Radiation exposure in the cath lab primarily results from the use of fluoroscopy and cineangiography during diagnostic and interventional procedures. Understanding these risks and implementing effective radiatio

Childhood Exposure to Low to Moderate Doses of Ionizing Radiation and the Risk of Vascular Diseases.

In the Tinea Capitis Study (Israel, 1966-2011), we assessed the association between childhood exposure to low to moderate doses of ionizing radiation (IR) to the head and neck and the development of vascular diseases (ischemic heart disease, carotid artery stenosis, and stroke) in adulthood. The study included 17,734 individuals from the Tinea Capitis cohort (7,408 irradiated in childhood and 10,326 nonirradiated), insured by Israel's largest health provider. Individual dosimetry was estimated based on measurements made on a head phantom and original treatment records. The mean doses were 1.5,

Further investigations of a radiation detector based on ionization-induced modulation of optical polarization.

Optical property modulation induced by ionizing radiation is a promising approach for ultra-fast, lower time jitter detection of photon arrival time. If successful, this method can be utilized in time-of-flight positron emission tomography to achieve a coincidence time resolution approaching 10 ps. In this work, the optical property modulation based method is further developed with focus on a detection setup based on two crossed polarizers. Previous work demonstrated that such an optical setup could be utilized in radiation detection, though its detection sensitivity needed improvement. This w

Techniques that decrease or eliminate ionizing radiation for evaluation of ventricular shunts in children with hydrocephalus.

Shunted hydrocephalus in children is a commonly seen diagnosis in hospitals throughout the world and is one of the most common chronic pediatric neurosurgical conditions. These children undergo numerous studies for routine surveillance as well as for evaluation of shunt malfunction, many of which are associated with significant radiation exposure over the child׳s lifetime. It is in the child׳s best interest to minimize the overall exposure to ionizing radiation so as to decrease the chance of the deleterious effects from occurring. The article outlines the epidemiology of ventricular shunt cat

Rosmarinic acid, a photo-protective agent against UV and other ionizing radiations.

Solar UV and other ionizing radiations cause a generation of reactive oxygen species, induce cellular DNA damage and alter skin homeostasis. The use of exogenous antioxidants is increasingly frequents, we attempt to demonstrate that a rosmarinic acid extract acts as photo-protector; both free radical scavenger as an inducer of the body's own endogenous defence mechanisms by regulating tyrosinase activity and stimulating melanin production. Malonyldialdehyde formation (TBARS) was delayed when RA was used. The protection factor was 3.24 times vs AA. TEAC value for RA was 1.6 times vs AA. The rad

[Tissue basophils of the thyroid gland in separate and combined exposure to ionizing radiation and ethanol].

Experiments with male albino rats gave evidence that a single intraperitoneal injection of 15% ethanol at the doses of 0.28 and 2.25 g/kg resulted in enhanced elimination of biologically active substances by tissue basophils (TB) both due to intensified degranulation and greater number of TB in the thyroid gland. Single total exposure to ionizing radiation at the doses of 5, 10, and 20 Gy stimulated the functional activity of TB with simultaneous accumulation of biologically inactive substances. Radio modifying effect of ethanol with respect to thyroid TB consisted of an increase of their numb

Analysis of radiation induced nucleobase-peptide crosslinks by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Upon exposure to ionizing radiation, DNA undergoes a variety of modifications including the production of a covalent bond between the nucleobase thymine and the amino acid tyrosine. These crosslinked lesions, produced in cells exposed to ionizing radiation, if unrepaired are thought to result in cell death. We have used electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to study a model system consisting of the peptide angiotensin, a 10 amino acid peptide containing only one tyrosine residue, irradiated in the presence of the nucleobase thymine. The presence of the covalently crosslinked speci

Alterations in the structure and function of the mammalian cell membrane after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Although the nucleus appears to represent the primary target for the killing of cells by ionizing radiation, the cell membrane may be another important site for radiation injury and modification of the radiation response. In this paper, the effects of radiation on various membrane-associated parameters which are expected to affect cellular viability or function are reviewed. These include the effect of radiation on membrane transport, lectin or hormone receptor sites, cell surface electrokinetics, cell membrane fluidity, cell surface topography, etc. Alternative biochemical mechanisms that may
