The ocular effects of intracarotid bromodeoxyuridine and radiation therapy in the treatment of malignant glioma.

Since July 1985, 23 patients have been entered into a phase I/II clinical trial using intraarterial 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) (400-600 mg/m2 daily for 8.5 weeks) and focal external beam radiotherapy (59.4 Gy at 1.8 Gy daily in 6.5 weeks) in the treatment of malignant gliomas (Kernohan grades 3 and 4). The side effects in all patients have included varying degrees of anorexia, fatigue, ipsilateral forehead dermatitis, blepharitis, and conjunctivitis. Mucopurulent conjunctivitis and exposure keratitis developed in several patients and spontaneous corneal perforation developed in one. Eyes from

Effects of X-ray contrast media and radiation on human vascular endothelial cells in vitro.

We have used cell culture techniques to study the effects of 16 contrast agents on human vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC) in vitro, where both the dose and duration of exposure are precisely known. Our results demonstrate that 1) exposure of HUVEC to radiographic contrast media can produce dose and time-dependent inhibition of the incorporation of [3H]leucine, [3H]thymidine, or [3H]uridine into macromolecules; 2) thymidine incorporation is the most affected; 3) the inhibition is not primarily due to osmotic effects; and 4) concomitant exposure to X-irradiation does not sensitize HUVEC to con

Endogenous murine leukemia viruses: frequency of radiation-activation and novel pathogenic effects of viral isolates.

Female C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice were injected i.p. with 0.06 microCi/kg or 0.5 microCi/kg of the short-lived alpha-emitting radionuclide 224radium at 3-day intervals. Infectious N-ecotropic XC+, and xenotropic C-type retroviruses were activated in several tissues in both strains. In C57BL/6 mice the activation of ecotropic and xenotropic virus was dose-dependent as observed 4 weeks after the start of irradiation. In BALB/c mice a few animals showed activation of ecotropic virus after four weeks of irradiation. The expression of xenotropic virus was similar in irradiated mice and controls. Viral

Mutagenic and lethal effects of near-ultraviolet radiation (290-400 nm) on bacteria and phage.

Despite decades of study of the effect of near-ultraviolet radiation (NUV) on bacterial cells, insights into mechanisms of deleterious alterations and subsequent recovery are just now emerging. These insights are based on observations that 1) damage by NUV may be caused by a reactive oxygen molecule, since H2O2 may be a photoproduct of NUV; 2) some, but not all, of the effects of NUV and H2O2 are interchangeable; 3) there is an inducible regulon (oxyR) that responds to oxidative stress and is involved in protection against NUV; 4) a number of NUV-sensitive mutants are defective either in the c

Long-term effects of local ionizing radiation treatment on Langerhans cells in mouse footpad epidermis.

Langerhans cells (LC) were studied with ADPase histochemistry in sheets of hind footpad epidermis from groups of CBA/H mice. Single, local 20-Gy doses of 250-kV x-rays were administered to the right hind feet of the mice when they were 3-4 months old, and LC were counted at intervals ranging from 2 to 24 months later. In unirradiated mice, aged 5-19 months, the mean density of LC in footpad was 1521-1617 cells/mm2. It dropped to 1137 +/- 86 cells/mm2 (mean +/- SE) in untreated 28-month-old mice. At times from 2-15 months after irradiation, normal mean densities of LC were present in footpad ep

[Effects of radiation emission of the CO2-laser on embryonal ocular bulb tissues (Gallus gallus)].

The wall of the eye bulbs of 15 chick embryos, immediately after their transfer to Hanks fluid, was irradiated with a CO2 laser, focused on the 12th conjunctival papilla or on its prospective area. This 'in vitro' irradiation was performed under the following main parameters: (a) beam power congruent to 4W; (b) exposure time = 1/30 sec; (c) thickness of the fluid (Hanks solution) on the target surfaces = 0, 3 divided by 0, 7 mm. The same area of the eye bulb surface of other 15 chick embryos was irradiated 'in ovo' under the following conditions: (a) congruent to 4W; (b) = 1/10 sec; (c) (amnio

Effects of short-wave ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) on delayed hypersensitivity in the guinea-pig.

Guinea-pigs, previously sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), were exposed to varying doses of UV-C radiation (254 nm) on one of the flanks for a period of 15 days. They were then patch-tested with DNCB immediately after UV treatment. The responses to DNCB were diminished both in the irradiated and non-irradiated skin compared with control animals which had not received UV-C radiation. This effect was dose dependent and could only be demonstrated for a limited period of time. Guinea-pig exposed to UV-C radiation did not show a decreased response to sodium lauryl sulphate, which is a poten

In vitro assay of the effects of psoralens plus ultraviolet radiation on human lymphoid cells.

An in vitro assay system that mimics some of the features of in vivo oral methoxsalen photochemotherapy (PUVA) in relation to human lymphoid cells was developed. In this assay, suspension cultures of human lymphoid cells were subjected to therapeutic concentrations of 8-MOP and to a UVA radiation spectrum modified to approximate the dermal exposure. The assay permitted correlation and quantitation of multiple 8-MOP plus UVA-induced biological and physical alterations in the same assay system. Thus were demonstrated inhibition of DNA synthesis, reduction of cell survival, production of DNA cros

Radiosensitizing effect of astaxanthin on radiation-induced cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is a primary treatment for cancer, including breast cancer, but its effectiveness is limited by severe side effects. Radiosensitization using natural products can enhance efficacy while reducing radiation doses. Astaxanthin (AST), a natural carotenoid with antioxidant properties, requires further investigation for its role in cancer therapy. Especially in many previous studies, AST found to has prooxidant effect in cancer cells reverse its antioxidant effect in normal cells. METHODS: This study explored AST’s potential to enhance the cytotoxic effects of ionizing

Evaluation of the neuroprotective effect of quercetin against damage caused by gamma radiation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Radiation therapy is a routine clinical practice that has been used for a long time in the treatment of cancer patients. The most important dose-limiting organ in patients receiving radiotherapy for various conditions is the brain. The mechanisms underlying brain and pituitary gland damage caused by radiation are largely unknown. It is of great importance to use radioprotective agents to protect against damage. This study aims to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of quercetin in experimental radiation-induced brain and pituitary gland damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS

A Systematic Review of the Cost-Effectiveness of Stereotactic Radiation Therapy for Cancer Oligometastases.

It is crucial to economically justify the use of promising therapies such as stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for oligometastatic disease (OMD). The goal of this systematic review was to provide a summative evaluation of publications that analyzed the cost-effectiveness (CE) of SABR for OMD. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-guided methodology, PubMed and Embase were searched for modeling-based CE studies for various forms of limited metastatic disease. Only full publications that specifically compared SABR with a systemic therapy-based

Effective radiation dose of skeletal surveys performed for suspected physical abuse.

BACKGROUND: A skeletal survey is an important diagnostic tool for patients presenting with suspected physical abuse. A relatively recent change in guidelines for skeletal surveys by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) in 2017 has led to more initial and follow-up images for these patients, which would be expected to have led to an increase in effective radiation dose. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effective dose following the change in guidelines and to ascertain the difference between doses before and after the change in guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected retrospectivel

Late Sequelae of Radiotherapy—The Effect of Technical and Conceptual Innovations in Radiation Oncology.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of all patients with tumors need radiotherapy. Long-term survivors may suffer from late sequelae of the treatment. The existing radiotherapeutic techniques are being refined so that radiation can be applied more precisely, with the goal of limiting the radiation exposure of normal tissue and reducing late sequelae. METHODS: This review is based on the findings of a selective search in PubMed for publications on late sequelae of conventional percutaneous radiotherapy, January 2000 to May 2020. Late sequelae affecting the central nervous system, lungs, and heart a

Effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy in radiation dermatitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention and treatment of radiation dermatitis (RD). METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using seven databases and the gray literature. We performed a meta-analysis to summarize the effect sizes of response rates (RRs). RESULTS: We included seven clinical trials. Breast cancer patients receiving PBMT developed more grade 1 RD than the control group (RR 1.55, 95 % CI 1.14-2.10, I2 = 51 %). PBMT appears to prevent RD grade 2 (RR 0.33, 95 % CI 0.09-1.23, I2 = 85 %) and RD grade 3 (RR 0.21, 95 % CI 0.05-0

The effect of gamma and microwave radiation sterilization on periodontological grafts for microbiological evaluation.

Periodontological grafts are materials used in dentistry to regenerate lost gingival soft tissues or bone parts. In the case of direct contact with blood, the possibility of disease transmission from the source to the patient is high. This source can be an animal or a human. Therefore, the sterilization of grafts before implanting to the patient is of significant importance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate gamma radiation and microwave sterilization processes from microbiological and sterility perspectives and to compare the effectiveness of these two sterilization methods.
