Odontogenic cysts: a retrospective study of 1227 cases in an Iranian population from 1987 to 2007.

Odontogenic cysts constitute a major part of oral pathological lesions, but little is known about their distribution patterns in various pop … om 3 to 84 years with a mean of 28 years. 49% of cysts were found in maxilla and 50.4% in mandible. Radicular cyst was the most common type followed by dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, residual cyst and paradental cyst. Lateral periodontal cyst, eruption cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst and gingival cyst of adults were also reported. The distribution pa …

Dual lesions: a diagnostic dilemma.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare aggressive developmental cyst of the jaw. It most commonly occurs in middle-aged people with mandible anterior region being the most affected site. This lesion can present as a unilocular or multilocular radiolucency and has high recurrence rate. The histopathologic features of the GOC are complex and often coincide with the features of dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, and low-grade central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMEC). At times, the microscopic features are so similar to central low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma that it becomes highly impossible…

Tarlov Cyst with Pelvic Extension Mimicking an Adnexal Mass: A Case Report.

Pelvic extension of sacral Tarlov cysts can closely resemble adnexal masses on ultrasound. When cystic pelvic lesions coexist with radicular pain or sitting intolerance, MRI is mandatory prior to gynecologic surgery. Conservative treatment is preferred unless neurological deterioration occurs.

Pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in human apical periodontitis: Correlation with clinical and histological findings.

This study aimed to compare the levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) between apical periodontitis lesions with different clinical and histological features. Based on clinical data and history of disease, 100 human apical periodontitis lesions were categorised as either asymptomatic or symptomatic lesions. According to histological examination, lesions were divided into periapical granulomas and radicular cysts. Pulp tissues of 25 impacted wisdom teeth were used as controls. Homogenised tissue samples were centrifuged and supernatan…

[Racemous cysticercosis of the cauda equina and cystic arachnoiditis. Apropos of 2 cases].

Central nervous system infection by the larval form of the pork tapeworm, taenia solium is a major public health problem in view of its prevalence. The high incidence of neurocysticercosis in Reunion Island has been precised by computerized tomography and Elisa test. Spinal involvement is an uncommon form of cysticercosis, occurring with a frequency of less than 1% in large series. The types of involvement that are most common are subarachnoid cysts which appear as intradural extramedullary masses and meningeal reaction with appearance of arachnoiditis at myelography. Intramedullary involvemen

Transition of a herniated lumbar disc to lumbar discal cyst: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Another rare cause of lower back pain with radiculopathy is the discal cyst. It is believed to arise from degeneration of a herniated disc, although many other theories of its origin have been proposed. Here, we report a patient with lower back pain/radiculopathy attributed originally to a herniated lumbar disc, which transformed within 6 months into a discal cyst. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old male had a magnetic resonance (MR) documented herniated lumbar disc at the L4-5 level. It was managed conservatively for 6 months, after which symptoms recurred and progressed. The follow

[Embolisation of aneurysmal bone cysts as a minimally invasive treatment option - presentation of two cases].

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate embolisation as a therapy option for aneurysmal bone cysts of the trunk. METHOD: Case reports about two males with intermittent pseudo-radicular lumboischialgia and coxalgia are discussed. RESULTS: The diagnostic work-up and biopsies verified an aneurysmal bone cyst in both males. In one patient the tumour-like lesion was localised in the fifth lumbar vertebral body, in the other in the left ischium and pubis. Arterial embolisation was performed in both cases. Follow-up at 6 and 24 months after embolisation showed a significant increase of sclerosis

The nature of the hyaline rings in chronic periostitis and other conditions: an ultrastructural study.

The hyaline rings found in chronic periostitis and a radicular cyst were investigated ultrastructurally. These rings were composed of fine fibrillar material which was probably derived from degraded collagen fibrils, all of which eventually became degraded and unrecognizable. Foreign-body material in the form of circular bodies of probable plant origin were also found and should not be confused with the hyaline rings.

Microsurgical treatment of juxta facet cysts of the lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVES: Juxta facet cysts are a common cause of low back and radicular pain. They are mostly associated with degenerative facet joints and spondylolisthesis. The study focuses on long-term outcomes after microsurgical treatment without fusion. METHOD: From April 2002 to April 2004, 31 patients (23 female and 8 male) underwent microsurgical resection of lumbar juxta facet cysts. The patient age ranged from 31 to 83 years (mean 67.2 years). The most affected level was L4-L5 (19 patients), followed by L3-L4 (9 patients). Fourteen patients additionally had spondylolisthesis of the involved se

Facet joint disorders: from diagnosis to treatment.

One of the most common sources of spinal pain syndromes is the facet joints. Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar facet joint pain syndromes comprise 55%, 42%, and 31% of chronic spinal pain syndromes, respectively. Common facet joint disorders are degenerative disorders, such as osteoarthritis, hypertrophied superior articular process, and facet joint cysts; septic arthritis; systemic and metabolic disorders, such as ankylosing spondylitis or gout; and traumatic dislocations. The facet pain syndrome from osteoarthritis is suspected from a patient's history (referred pain pattern) and physical exami

Epidermal growth factor receptor in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was investigated in 67 cases of odontogenic cysts and 35 cases of odontogenic tumors using monoclonal antibody to EGFR (Biomarker, Israel) to determine the presence and significance of this transmembrane growth factor receptor. The cystic epithelial cells of odontogenic cystic lesions (keratocyst 60%; primordial cyst 75%; radicular cyst 35%; and follicular cyst 47.4%) were positive to EGFR staining. Cytochemical characterization of EGFR in those cystic epithelium was cell membrane positive type as in the normal epithelium. No expression…

Decompression of a large periapical lesion utilizing an improved drainage device.

A decompression device constructed of plastic intravenous tubing attached to an acrylic base and ligated into position with orthodontic ligature wire was used to successfully reduce a large periapical lesion in the anterior mandible. Guidelines for this treatment approach are presented.
