The immunolight- and electron-microscopic study revealed neuropeptide Y (NPY) immunoreactivity in the chief cells and a few nerve fibers of the carotid body of young rats. NPY-immunoreactive chief cells were often seen as a single cell or a group of a few chief cells in the carotid body of young rats. The immunoreaction deposits were mainly seen in the dense-cored vesicles and diffusely in the cytoplasm of the chief cells. These findings suggest that NPY may be stored in the core of granules of the chief cells of the carotid body in young rats.

In a long-term study the effect of glycerol and phenol-glycerol on rats mandibular nerve was analysed. The substances were applicated perineurally. Nerves treated with glycerol did not show any severe pathological changes. Only the number of desintegrations of myelin seemed to be more pronounced. This, however, was a transitary effect. Mg(2+)-depleted rat reticulocytes reincubated in Mg(2+)-containing media expressed net Mg2+ influx, which was the same in NaCl, choline Cl and sucrose medium. Km of Mg2+ influx amounted to 1.2 mM and Vmax to 0.9 mmol/l cells x h. Mg2+ influx into reticulocytes was inhibited by amiloride, quinidine and imipramine. Mg2+ uptake together with Cl- for charge compensation could be excluded. However, the cation which must be exchanged for Mg2+ in Mg2+ uptake could not be identified because of the low rate of Mg2+ influx.

The effect of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), one of the neuropeptides present in the pineal, was examined on perifused rat pineal glands. The distribution of sigma (sigma) receptors in the rat brain was studied with autoradiography using [3H]1,3-di-ortho-tolyl-guanidine ([3H]DTG) as a ligand. The highest concentration of sigma receptors was seen in the pineal gland, an area which has not been previously studied. This result is of interest as both sigma receptors and the pineal gland have recently been shown to play a role not only in the nervous system but also in the immune and endocrine systems.

The authors investigated histological characteristics of the thyroid gland in irradiated rats under the conditions of anepiphysia.
