In February 1995, a 56-year-old female was taken to the operating room for routine placement of a Hickman catheter. Her internist planned palliative chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer. Using the Seldinger technique, the right subclavian vein was entered and a Hickman catheter was placed. Shortly after extubation and arrival in the postoperative recovery unit, the patient had respiratory and cardiac arrest. This paper describes how the putrefactive changes in a cadaver will influence the determination of Paraquat in autopsy material. The carcasses of rats that had been given large doses of Paraquat and subsequently killed by cervical dislocation, were left at room temperature for up to seven days. Twenty patients were enrolled in a prospective, randomized, open vial, within-patient, crossover design study of methohexital and etomidate anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Methohexital (1.0 mg/kg) and etomidate (0.3 mg/kg) were each given for two ECTs.
