Building an auxiliary diagnostic and treatment efficacy prediction model for adolescent depression using machine learning based on electroencephalography technology.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression, characterized by high incidence rates and significant recurrence risks, has emerged as a major global public health concern. Current diagnosis relies predominantly on subjective questionnaires, lacking objective biomarkers and presenting challenges for early identification. Although exercise intervention is recommended as a safe and effective first-line non-pharmacological treatment, individual responses vary considerably. Approximately 30-40% of patients experience limited symptom improvement, necessitating reliable neurobiological markers to predict interve

A systematic benchmarking pipeline for demand forecasting and inventory-aware supply chain decision support.

Demand forecasting has been shown to be one of the key facilitators of successful supply chain and inventory management. In this work, we introduce a benchmarking pipeline for demand forecasting in retail that includes data preprocessing, comparative benchmarking of different machine learning/deep learning (ML/DL) approaches, and decision-focused evaluation. Unlike other works that compare predictive performance of ML/DL models and end there, our pipeline links reproducible ML/DL benchmarking and decision-focused evaluation through cost of inventory management in order to derive costs from for

Enhancing educational assessment through automated question classification using a RoBERTa-based ensemble model.

Classifying exam questions using Bloom's Taxonomy is a critical task in education. However, performing this classification manually is often inefficient, prone to subjective errors and demands significant time from educators. To address this challenge, this study proposes and evaluates a robust system using state-of-the-art Deep Learning (DL) techniques. This system uses the pre-trained language model RoBERTa to understand the meaning of text and turn it into useful features. These features are then used by three different types of models to classify the text: a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), a L

HAPQ: A Hardware-Aware Pruning and Quantization Pipeline for Event-Based SNN Detection.

Autonomous driving perception demands low latency, high temporal resolution, and stringent hardware efficiency. While event-based spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer bio-inspired sparse computation, their deployment on edge field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is obstructed by irregular execution patterns and temporal state storage overhead. To address this, we propose HAPQ, a unified hardware-aware pruning and quantization pipeline for compact event-based object detection. Starting from an end-to-end adaptive sampling SNN detector (EAS-SNN), HAPQ conducts hardware-aware configuration searc

Unobtrusive Human Activity Recognition Using Multivariate Indoor Air Quality Sensing and Hierarchical Event Detection.

Recent studies have shown that common household activities produce characteristic patterns in indoor air pollutants, enabling activity inference using environmental measurements alone. However, pollutant-based approaches are usually formulated as flat multi-class classification problems, even though indoor environments are dominated by long baseline periods with no emission-generating activity, leading to false alarms and unstable predictions. This work proposes a gated hierarchical inference framework for recognizing activities from indoor air quality data. A first-stage gate detects whether

DLBclass: a probabilistic molecular classifier to guide clinical investigation and practice in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a clinically and molecularly heterogeneous disease. The increasing recognition and targeting of genetically defined DLBCLs highlight the need for robust classification algorithms. We previously characterized recurrent genetic alterations in DLBCL and identified 5 discrete subtypes, clusters 1 to 5 (C1-C5), with unique mechanisms of transformation, immune evasion, candidate treatment targets, and different outcomes after standard first-line therapy. Herein, we validate the C1 to C5 DLBCL taxonomy in an independent data set and use the expanded series of

Distinguishing Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children From Typhus Using Artificial Intelligence: MIS-C Versus Endemic Typhus (AI-MET).

BACKGROUND: The pandemic emergent disease multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) following coronavirus disease-19 infection can mimic endemic typhus. We aimed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a clinical decision support system that accurately distinguishes MIS-C versus endemic typhus (MET). METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and laboratory features rapidly available following presentation were extracted for 133 patients with MIS-C and 87 patients hospitalized due to typhus. An attention module assigned importance to inputs used to create the 2-phase AI-MET. Phase 1 u

Prediction of treatment response after stereotactic radiosurgery of brain metastasis using deep learning and radiomics on longitudinal MRI data.

We developed artificial intelligence models to predict the brain metastasis (BM) treatment response after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) using longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and evaluated prediction accuracy changes according to the number of sequential MRI scans. We included four sequential MRI scans for 194 patients with BM and 369 target lesions for the Developmental dataset. The data were randomly split (8:2 ratio) for training and testing. For external validation, 172 MRI scans from 43 patients with BM and 62 target lesions were additionally enrolled. The maximum axia

Bypassing input to V1 in visual awareness: A TMS-EROS investigation.

Early visual cortex (V1-V3) is believed to be critical for normal visual awareness by providing the necessary feedforward input. However, it remains unclear whether visual awareness can occur without further involvement of early visual cortex, such as re-entrant feedback. It has been challenging to determine the importance of feedback activity to these areas because of the difficulties in dissociating this activity from the initial feedforward activity. Here, we applied single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the left posterior parietal cortex to elicit phosphenes in the abse

Improved SSA-Based GRU Neural Network for BDS-3 Satellite Clock Bias Forecasting.

Satellite clock error is a key factor affecting the positioning accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). In this paper, we use a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network to construct a satellite clock bias forecasting model for the BDS-3 navigation system. In order to further improve the prediction accuracy and stability of the GRU, this paper proposes a satellite clock bias forecasting model, termed ITSSA-GRU, which combines the improved sparrow search algorithm (SSA) and the GRU, avoiding the problems of GRU's sensitivity to hyperparameters and its tendency to fall into loca

Applying artificial intelligence using routine clinical data for preoperative diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of gastric cancer.

The present study employed artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning technology to evaluate the prognosis of gastric cancer using blood collection data, commonly used in clinical practice and subsequently performed a stratification distinct from conventional tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification. Experiments were conducted using four machine learning methods, namely, logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GB) and deep neural network (DNN), to classify good or poor post-5-year prognosis based on clinicopathological data and post-5-year relapse occurrence. Four State Sleep Staging From a Multilayered Algorithm Using Electrocardiographic and Actigraphic Data.

PURPOSE: Sleep studies are important to evaluate sleep and sleep-related disorders. The standard test for evaluating sleep is polysomnography, during which several physiological signals are recorded separately and simultaneously with specialized equipment that requires a technologist. Simpler recordings that can model the results of a polysomnography would provide the benefit of expanding the possibilities of sleep recordings. METHODS: Using the publicly available sleep data set from the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis and 1769 nights of sleep, we extracted a distinct data subset with en

Screening of sleep apnea based on heart rate variability and long short-term memory.

PURPOSE: Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a prevalent sleep disorder in which apnea and hypopnea occur frequently during sleep and result in increase of the risk of lifestyle-related disease development as well as daytime sleepiness. Although SAS is a common sleep disorder, most patients remain undiagnosed because the gold standard test polysomnography (PSG), is high-cost and unavailable in many hospitals. Thus, an SAS screening system that can be used easily at home is needed. METHODS: Apnea during sleep affects changes in the autonomic nervous function, which causes fluctuation of the heart ra

Applications of neural networks in urology: a systematic review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the last decade, major advancements in artificial intelligence technology have emerged and revolutionized the extent to which physicians are able to personalize treatment modalities and care for their patients. Artificial intelligence technology aimed at mimicking/simulating human mental processes, such as deep learning artificial neural networks (ANNs), are composed of a collection of individual units known as 'artificial neurons'. These 'neurons', when arranged and interconnected in complex architectural layers, are capable of analyzing the most complex patterns. The

Non-Invasive Estimation of Intracranial Pressure by Diffuse Optics: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is an important parameter to monitor in several neuropathologies. However, because current clinically accepted methods are invasive, its monitoring is limited to patients in critical conditions. On the other hand, there are other less critical conditions for which ICP monitoring could still be useful; therefore, there is a need to develop non-invasive methods. We propose a new method to estimate ICP based on the analysis of the non-invasive measurement of pulsatile, microvascular cerebral blood flow with diffuse correlation spectroscopy. This is achieved by training

Rare and private variations in neural crest, apoptosis and sarcomere genes define the polygenic background of isolated Tetralogy of Fallot.

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common cyanotic congenital heart disease. Its genetic basis is demonstrated by an increased recurrence risk in siblings and familial cases. However, the majority of TOF are sporadic, isolated cases of undefined origin and it had been postulated that rare and private autosomal variations in concert define its genetic basis. To elucidate this hypothesis, we performed a multilevel study using targeted re-sequencing and whole-transcriptome profiling. We developed a novel concept based on a gene's mutation frequency to unravel the polygenic origin of TOF. We sh

Artificial intelligence in allergen immunotherapy: toward a proactive and personalized management of allergic diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The management of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic diseases and allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is complicated by high interindividual variability and the unavailability of reliable predictive biomarkers. Given the complexity of the immune response underlying these processes, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the clinical management of these patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature highlights how machine learning (ML) can efficiently stratify patients by analyzing omics data and molecular sensitization profiles. Models such as long-term m

A novel multi-agent spatiotemporal fusion framework for intelligent skin cancer diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Skin cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, and early-stage diagnosis remains challenging due to its morphological similarity to benign lesions. Most existing computer-aided diagnostic systems rely on single static images, overlooking temporal information that is critical for distinguishing progressive malignancy. METHODS: We propose a novel multi-agent spatiotemporal fusion framework to enhance diagnostic accuracy. The framework consists of three key components: (1) a spatial agent based on a convolutional neural network for high-fidelity static feature extrac
