Accommodative accuracy by retinoscopy versus autorefraction spherical equivalent or horizontal meridian power.

BACKGROUND: To assess agreement between accommodative lag by monocular estimation method (MEM) retinoscopy and Nott retinoscopy compared to open-field autorefraction using spherical equivalent versus power in the 180 meridian for both children and adults. METHODS: Twenty-six children aged 7-16 years (mean: 9.9 ± 2.3) and 27 adults aged 22-29 years (mean: 24.2 ± 1.7) participated. Accommodative lag was measured by examiners with autorefraction and separate examiners using MEM and Nott retinoscopy while subjects viewed 6/18 letters at 33 cm. Five measures of autorefraction were averaged with ve

Comparison of cyclopentolate versus tropicamide cycloplegia in children.

This double masked study compares the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide 1% and cyclopentolate 1% in 20 nonstrabismic, nonamblyopic, hyperopic 6- to 12-year-old children with a mean refractive error = +1.48 +/- 1.10 diopters (D). Unlike previous studies which used only amplitude of accommodation to measure the depth of cycloplegia, this study compares refractive error as determined by retinoscopy, distance subjective refraction, and distance autorefraction (Canon R-1). In addition, we compare the amplitude of accommodation as measured by subjective push-up and objective autorefraction methods.

Dynamic retinoscopy and accommodation.

The added positive lens power required for low and high neutrals at a distance of 1/3 m is determined as a function of age for a sample of 221 clinically normal subjects, aged between 10 and 80 years. These dynamic retinoscopy results are compared with corresponding laser optometer measurements of the levels of accommodation under each condition. Dark focus (tonic accommodation) measurements are carried out on a further sample of 58 subjects. Although the mean results of dynamic retinoscopy agree with those found by earlier authors, on the basis of our sample it is concluded that the considera

Biologic and environmental risk factors for regression after photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: After photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the final refraction in the majority of patients is near the intended refraction. However, a significant proportion of patients show regression, which is commonly associated with corneal haze. This study aims to determine whether biologic and environmental factors influence the outcome of PRK. METHODS: One hundred patients prospectively underwent -3.00- or -6.00-diopter corrections. Three months after surgery, 100% of patients answered a questionnaire that recorded their biologic characteristics, medical and ocular history, and post

Accommodating version of a schematic eye for emmetropia and myopia.

AIM: To develop an accommodating, wide-angle, schematic eye for emmetropia and myopia in which spectacle refraction and accommodation level are input parameters. METHOD: The schematic eye is based on an earlier unaccommodated refraction-dependent eye for myopia developed by Atchison in 2006. This has a parabolic gradient index lens and parameters derived from biometric and optical measurements on young adults. Several parameters are linearly dependent upon spectacle refraction (anterior radius of curvature of the cornea, axial length and vertex radii of curvature and conic asphericities of a

Changes in accommodation and behavioural performance with a contact lens for myopia management: A comparison between a dual-focus and a single-vision soft contact lens.

INTRODUCTION: Dual-focus soft contact lenses for myopia management have demonstrated to be an effective strategy to reduce myopia progression. However, this optical design has been shown to alter visual quality and accommodative function. The aim of this study was to examine the accommodative and behavioural performance during the execution of a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) while wearing dual-focus and single-vision soft contact lenses. METHODS: The steady-state accommodative response was recorded with the WAM-5500 binocular open-field autorefractor during the execution of a 10-min PVT at

[Myopia treatment and prophylaxis with defocus incorporated multiple segments spectacle lenses].

Excessive axial eye growth in children and adolescents leads to progressive myopia and can result in severe ocular diseases in adulthood. Various strategies have already been developed to inhibit progression of myopia. The novel single vision lens presented in this article features the defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) technology and adds an easy to use, noninvasive option to the portfolio of myopia treatment. Initial studies showed promising results with only a very low side effect profile.

Achromatic axes and their linear optics.

If a polychromatic ray segment enters an optical system, is dispersed into many slightly different paths through the system, and finally emerges at a single point, then the incident segment defines what Le Grand and Ivanoff called an achromatic axis of the system. Although their ideas of some 65 years ago have inspired important work on the optics of the eye there has been no analysis of such axes for their own sake. The purpose of this paper is to supply such an analysis. Strictly speaking optical systems, with some exceptions, do not have achromatic axes of the Le Grand-Ivanoff type. However

Visual performance after correcting higher order aberrations in keratoconic eyes.

Keratoconic eyes are affected by an irregular optical blur induced by significant magnitude of higher order aberrations (HOAs). Although it is expected that correction of ocular aberrations leads to an improvement in visual performance, keratoconic eyes might not achieve the visual benefit predicted by optical theory because of long-term adaptation to poor retinal image quality. To investigate this, an adaptive optics (AO) system equipped with a large-stroke deformable mirror and a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor was used to correct the aberrations and measure high contrast tumbling E visual a
