Therapy-facilitated integration responsibility: qualitative interviews with refugee psychotherapy clients in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience substantial pre-, peri- and post-migration stress resulting in high prevalence rates of mental disorders. Additionally, refugees face significant challenges integrating into their host society. Even though access to psychotherapy for refugees might impact the integration process beneficially, research on refugees' perspectives on psychotherapy, integration and the interaction with emotional distress is limited. This study explores refugees' perspectives on how psychotherapy may influence their integration process and enhance their psychological well-being. …

Salvage of a 5-Year Neglected Distal Femur Nonunion in a Refugee: A Case Report.

CASE: A 38-year-old woman was found to have a closed, chronically displaced left distal femur fracture sustained 5 years prior while living in South America. Prompt surgical intervention in her home country was inaccessible, leading to non-union, functional impairment, leg shortening, and soft tissue contractures. Dual-plate fixation, bone grafting, and quadricepsplasty were performed and the patient's function and mobility were restored to a degree commensurate with daily requirements. CONCLUSION: Chronically displaced distal femur fractures with nonunion, shortening, and soft tissue contrac

Interpreter Child Syndrome Leading to Parentification and Anxiety in a Refugee Girl: A Case Report.

Language brokering, in which children interpret for non-native-speaking parents, is common among refugee families but is often overlooked as a potential psychosocial stressor. Studies indicate that 75-90% of immigrant and refugee children serve as language brokers, with 18-20% experiencing clinically significant psychological distress related to this role. Excessive or emotionally charged interpreting may lead to parentification, anxiety, and developmental disruption. We present a case of a nine-year-old Syrian refugee girl who developed anxiety, somatic symptoms, academic decline, and emotion

A retail audit of mosquito control products in Bidibidi refugee settlement, northwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda remains one of the highest malaria burden countries globally, with refugee populations disproportionately affected. While government-led initiatives, such as free distribution of insecticide-treatesd nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying, are key to the vector control response, limited data exist on the role of retail markets in providing complementary mosquito control products (MCPs) in refugee settings. METHODS: As part of the Advancing Evidence for the Global Implementation of Spatial Repellents project, we conducted a retail audit across 61 refugee and host community

Depression and suicidal ideation among adolescent girls in refugee settlements in northern Uganda.

Depression is a leading cause of disability, morbidity, and mortality among adolescent girls in Africa, with varying prevalence across different populations. However, there is paucity of data on the burden of depression among priority groups in unique settings like adolescent girls living in refugee settlements, where access to mental health services including psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation is scarce. We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study among adolescent girls from 4 selected refugee settlements in Obongi and Yumbe districts, Uganda. A multi-stage

A Systematic Review of Empirical Evidence on Art Therapy With Traumatized Refugee Children and Youth.

The current global refugee crisis revealed that refugee children, youth, and adults are uniquely vulnerable to traumatic events. Yet, there are only a few studies available that report robust systematic data on art therapy interventions with mental health in recent refugee populations. The purpose of the study is to synthesize and evaluate (a) the available research evidence on the use of art therapy in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) levels in refugees, and (b) the quality of empirical evidence for each of the reviewed studies. The authors adopted the Council for Exceptional Ch…
