Opioid receptor densities were measured in the hippocampus of chronically stressed (tethered) pigs to study the involvement of endogenous opioid systems in stereotypy performance. Three groups of animals were housed tethered for 2 (n=12), 5.5 (n=12) and 8-9 months (n=8), respectively, and the intensity of stereotypy performance was determined. We investigated the protective effect of melatonin on stress-induced gastric lesions in rats. Fasted rats were subjected to water immersion restraint stress for 4 h and the percentage of corpus mucosa containing hemorrhagic lesions was determined. Currently, the European Community is in the process of discussing the details of how to conduct various protocols for safety assessment. Additionally, there is a desire that these protocols be harmonized internationally. This presentation attempts to describe the critical and non-critical parameters of the protocol for detecting potential contact allergens in the guinea pig and also discusses some controversial issues. It is also emphasized that the identification of a test material as a potential sensitizer is only the first step in the risk-assessment exercise.

OBJECTIVE: To describe 10 infants with benign neonatal sleep myoclonus.
DESIGN: Patient series, representing the experience of one pediatric neurologist.
SETTING: Referral-based Pediatric Neurology Service at a Children's Hospital.

Rat gastric mucosal blood flow, hydrochloric acid (HC1) secretion, and morphological changes of parietal cells were studied by light and electron microscopy using histochemical techniques. A review of police records for the nine-year period from 1974 to 1982 identified 20 men who died following restraint by an upper-body control hold while in the custody of a large, urban police department. The calcium channel antagonists verapamil and nifedipine were examined for their effects on conscious basal gastric acid output, stress ulcer formation and on ethanol-induced ulcers. A relationship has been established between varying metabolic response of leukocytes to immobilization stress and severity of the shock progress. Initiation of the shock is accompanied by different response of animal leukocytes that correlates with the severity of the subsequent process. Formation of the resistance to shock is associated with an active glucose involvement into energy and plastic metabolic reactions, activation of the substrate-enzymic systems of glycolysis, pentose shunt, terminal stage of the respiratory chain, decreased rate of succinte dehydrogenation.

The influence of restraint stress on serum calcium (Ca) and phosphate was studied in normal and thyroidectomized rats. In addition the response of gastric stress ulcer index, blood gastrin and glucagon to exogenous Ca was investigated.
