Adenoviruses recovered from the northern Stockholm area during 1987-1992 have been subjected to restriction endonuclease analysis. Adenoviruses of all subgenera (A-F) were represented and a considerable degree of serotype variation was seen, e.g. the rarely encountered subgenus A viruses were frequently isolated in the present study. Three genetic functions have been mapped to the minute Sxr (sex-reversed) region of the mouse Y chromosome. These are Tdy, the primary testis determinant; Hya, the locus (either structural or regulatory) controlling the expression of the male-specific minor histocompatibility antigen H-Y; and Spy, a spermatogenic gene. To analyze the characteristics of Leptospira strains HY-1, HY-2, and HY-10, which were isolated from patients with leptospirosis in Korea in 1985, 12 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against strain HY-1 and six MAbs against serovar lai strain 017 were produced, and their properties were determined by the microscopic agglutination test. A human phenylalanine hydroxylase cDNA clone was isolated from a human liver cDNA library. The size of the cDNA insert is approximately 2.4 kb and appears to be a near full length copy of a phenylalanine hydroxylase mRNA. This cDNA was used to probe for HindIII restriction enzyme polymorphisms in heterozygote typing of families with phenylketonuria. The use of three alleles of this polymorphism, as opposed to the two alleles as previously described, increases the informativity for typing - and therefore also for prenatal diagnosis - in certain families from 75% to 100%.

An Italian family in which heterocellular hereditary persistence of fetal haemoglobin (HPFH) interacts with both beta(+)- and delta beta-thalassaemia is described.
