Metabolite Changes in the Aqueous Humor of Patients With Retinal Vein Occlusion Macular Edema: A Metabolomics Analysis.

Macular edema (ME) is the main cause of visual impairment in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The degree of ME affects the prognosis of RVO patients, while it lacks objective laboratory biomarkers. We aimed to compare aqueous humor samples from 28 patients with retinal vein occlusion macular edema (RVO-ME) to 27 age- and sex-matched controls by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, so as to identify the key biomarkers and to increase the understanding of the mechanism of RVO-ME at the molecular level. Through univaria…

Severe visual impairment due to an optic neuropathy and central retinal vein occlusion in a sarcoidosis patient.

BACKGROUND: The ophthalmic manifestation of neurosarcoidosis is varied. The complication of optic neuropathy and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is rare in sarcoidosis. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 55-year-old female with systemic sarcoidosis suffering from visual loss as hand motion in her left eye. A fundus examination showed severe optic disc head edema and hyperemia, and a central retinal vein occlusion phenotype including engorgement of all branches of the central retinal vein, dot, and flame-shaped hemorrhages. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed irregular hypertroph…

Design and evaluation of a new bioelectrical impedance sensor for micro-surgery: application to retinal vein cannulation.

PURPOSE: Nowadays, millions of people suffer from retinal vein occlusion, a blind-making eye disease. No curative treatment currently exists for this vascular disorder. However, a promising treatment consists in injecting a thrombolytic drug directly inside the affected retinal vessel. Successfully puncturing miniature vessels with diameters between 50 and 400 [Formula: see text] remains a real challenge, amongst others due to human hand tremor, poor visualisation and depth perception. As a consequence, there is a significant risk of double-puncturing the targeted vessel. Sub-surfacic injectio…

Management of macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion in an eye with prior vitrectomy and lensectomy.

An 82-year-old male with a history of pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy 6 years before presented with symptomatic macular edema (ME) from superotemporal branch retinal vein occlusion. He was sequentially treated with intravitreal agents, bevacizumab (IVB) 1.25 mg, ranibizumab (RBZ) 0.5, 1.0 and 2 mg, triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) 1 mg, and aflibercept (IAI) 2 mg. The therapeutic benefit from IVB and RBZ was short-lived - although a decrease in ME and improvement in visual acuity were observed, a completely dry macula was not achieved even after 1 week of treatment with any dose of these ag…

The cytoplasmic domain of neuropilin 1 is dispensable for angiogenesis, but promotes the spatial separation of retinal arteries and veins.

Neuropilin 1 (NRP1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is essential for blood vessel development in vertebrates. Best known for its abilit … shared collagen sleeve. In human eyes, similar arteriovenous crossings are risk factors for branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), an eye disease in which compression of the vein by the artery disrupts retinal blood flow, causing local tissue hypoxia and impairing vision. Nrp1(cyto)(Δ)(/)(Δ) mice may therefore provide a suitable genetic model to study the aeti …
