Imaging of the brain in full-term neonates: does sonography still play a role?

To date the literature comparing the usefulness of US and MR examinations of the neonatal brain suggests that US is not as effective a modality as MR. However, available studies were done on older equipment and published descriptions of the abnormalities found in the term brain are often incomplete. The purpose of this article is to emphasize technical factors that may be useful to optimize US imaging of the term neonatal brain, to provide a description of the sonographic findings in the brain in full-term neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic injury and to provide some data regarding the accuracy o

Does cytomegalovirus play a causative role in the development of various inflammatory diseases and cancer?

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a herpes virus that infects and is carried by 70-100% of the world's population. During its evolution, this virus has developed mechanisms that allow it to survive in an immunocompetent host. For many years, HCMV was not considered to be a major human pathogen, as it appeared to cause only rare cases of HCMV inclusion disease in neonates. However, HCMV is poorly adapted for survival in the immunosuppressed host and has emerged as an important human pathogen in AIDS patients and in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy following organ or bone marrow trans

Altered circadian rhythms in rheumatoid arthritis patients play a role in the disease's symptoms.

The circadian changes in the metabolism or nocturnal secretion of endogenous corticosteroids (reduction) observed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are responsible, in part, for the time-dependent changes that are observed in the inflammatory response and related early morning clinical symptoms of the disease. Melatonin (MLT), another circadian nocturnal hormone that is the secretory product of the pineal gland, has been implicated in the time-dependent RA inflammatory reaction with effects that are opposite to those of corticosteroids. As a consequence, altered functioning of the HPA axis

Intraventricular dyssynchrony may play a role in the development of mitral regurgitation in dilated cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: The development of functional mitral regurgitation (MR) in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) has been attributed to altered left ventricular (LV) geometry and annular dilatation. We propose the hypothesis that intraventricular dyssynchrony may play a role in the development of MR in DCM. METHODS AND RESULTS: Tissue Doppler echocardiography was performed in 32 DCM patients to assess the time from the onset of the QRS complex to the peak systolic myocardial strain (Ts) at 2 segments adjacent to the anterolateral and posteromedial papillary muscles from a short axis view. The time differe

Does leptin play a cytokine-like role within the airways of COPD patients?

The leptin-leptin receptor system might be up-regulated in the airways of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In bronchial biopsies obtained from normal subjects and smokers, with and without COPD, the present study examined leptin and leptin-receptor expression and their co-localisation in airway and inflammatory cells. Combining immunohistochemistry with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end-labelling techniques, apoptosis in airway and inflammatory cells and in leptin and leptin-receptor expressing cells was investigated. In the epithelial cells both leptin and lepti

Does structural and chemical divergence play a role in precluding undesirable protein interactions?

To understand the evolutionary forces establishing, maintaining, breaking, or precluding protein-protein interactions, a comprehensive data set of protein complexes has been analyzed to examine the overlap between protein interfaces and the most conserved or divergent protein surface areas. The most divergent areas tend to be found predominantly away from protein interfaces, although when found at interfaces, they are associated with specific lack of cross-reactivity between close homologues, like in antibody-antigen complexes. Moreover, the amino acid composition of highly variable regions is

Argumentation with restricted linguistic ability: performing a role play with aphasia or in a second language.

The main objective of this study is to illustrate how adaptation to linguistic limitations takes place in a specific activity and is affected by factors pertaining to the social activity or the individuals. A man with aphasia is compared to an adult immigrant L2 learner. An argumentative role play was video-recorded, transcribed and analysed. Both subjects have a very limited vocabulary and produce short utterances. The L2 learner often uses words that are semantically related to the target word, while the subject with aphasia uses more general and vague words, like pronouns, in combination wi

Ercc6l, a gene of SNF2 family, may play a role in the teratogenic action of alcohol.

The expression profile of a newly identified mouse nucleotide excision repair (NER) gene, Ercc6l, was investigated in a mouse model of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). In test 1, whole-mount in situ hybridization showed Ercc6l expressed mainly in the neural tube and heart of 10.5-day embryo. However, the expressions in both of the two organs were significantly down regulated after in uterus alcohol exposure from embryonic day (ED) 6-10, which was in accordance with the result of semi-quantitative RT-PCR. In test 2, the dams were given alcohol intragastrically from ED 6-15, and Northern blot of Er

Proventriculus (cardia) plays a crucial role in immunity in tsetse fly (Diptera: Glossinidiae).

Fat body and hemocytes play a central role in cellular and humoral responses for systemic infections in invertebrates, similar to the mammalian liver and blood cells. Epithelial surfaces, in particular the midgut, participate in the initial local immune responses in order to aid in the generation of the terminal cytotoxic molecules that mediate non-self recognition. Here, we describe for the first time the immune responses of a cluster of cells at the foregut/midgut junction--known as proventriculus (cardia) in the medically and agriculturally important insect, tsetse fly (Diptera: Glossinidae

[General practitioner plays a central role as case manager. Diagnosis and therapy of alcoholism].

The family doctor plays an important role in the treatment of alcoholism, especially in the initial contact and motivation phases, but also in the aftercare phase following outpatient or inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation. The central tasks are the diagnosis of alcohol dependency and possible neurological and somatic sequelae, mediation, information about consequences and motivation to undergo further treatment. After successful treatment (abstinence)--prevention of relapse, where necessary using so-called anti-craving drugs such as acamprostate.

CD19 signaling pathways play a major role for murine AIDS induction and progression.

Infection of genetically susceptible mice with the LP-BM5 mixture of murine leukemia viruses including an etiologic defective virus (BM5def) causes an immunodeficiency syndrome called murine AIDS (MAIDS). The disease is characterized by interactions between B cells and CD4(+) T cells resulting in polyclonal activation of both cell types. It is known that BM5def is expressed at highest levels in B cells and that B cells serve as viral APC. The CD19-CD21 complex and CD22 on the surface of B cells play critical roles as regulators of B cell responses to a variety of stimuli, influencing cell acti

Sulfur and chlorine play a non-acid base role in periparturient calcium homeostasis.

The increased risk of periparturient hypocalcaemia through offering high-K feeds in the precalving period has been reported previously. Two experiments (experiment 1 and 2) investigated the effect of KCl fertilizer on pasture mineral concentration, the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD), and the subsequent effect of this on periparturient plasma and urine mineral status. Experiment 2 examined the effect of precalving Mg source (MgO, MgSO4, and MgCl2) and postcalving Ca supplementation on the concentration of Ca and Mg in plasma and urine. Unexpectedly, pasture DCAD increased (P = 0.06) fro

The p55 TNF-alpha receptor plays a critical role in T cell alloreactivity.

TNF-alpha is known to be an important mediator of tissue damage during allograft rejection and graft-vs-host disease (GVHD), but its role in supporting T cell responses to allogeneic Ags is unclear. We have studied this question by comparing normal mice with those lacking the p55 (p55 TNFR-/-) or p75 (p75 TNFR-/-) TNF-alpha receptors as donors in well-defined bone marrow transplant (BMT) models. Recipients of p55 TNFR-/- cells had significantly reduced mortality and morbidity from GVHD compared with the other two sources of T cells. In vitro, T cells lacking the p55 (but not the p75) TNF-alpha

Hemps, a novel EGF-like protein, plays a central role in ascidian metamorphosis.

All chordates share several characteristic features including a dorsal hollow neural tube, a notochord, a pharynx and an endostyle. Unlike other chordate taxa, ascidians have a biphasic life-history with two distinct body plans. During metamorphosis, the larval nerve cord and notochord degenerate and the pharyngeal gill slits and endostyle form. While ascidians, like other marine invertebrates, metamorphose in response to specific environmental cues, it remains unclear how these cues trigger metamorphosis. We have identified a novel gene (Hemps) which encodes a protein with a putative secretio

The chemical behaviour of heavy metals plays a prominent role in the induction of oxidative stress.

It is often described that different environmental stress factors stimulate the production of reactive oxygen species and increase the activity of several enzymes quenching these radicals. The ascorbate-glutathione pathway is also involved in plant defence against oxidative stress. Therefore the effects of 2 metals (Cu, Zn) with different chemical behaviour were investigated on the enzymes of this pathway in the primary leaves of bean seedlings grown on hydroponics and supplied with a 50 microM concentration of both metals. The results obtained demonstrate that the capacities of the enzymes in

Salivary epidermal growth factor plays a role in protection of ileal mucosal integrity.

The role of salivary epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the maintenance of ileal mucosal integrity was studied by evaluating the effects of sialoadenectomy on luminal EGF levels, ileal tissue resistance (Rt), and unidirectional flux of [51Cr]EDTA. Mice in groups 1 (SLX) and 2 (SLX + EGF) were subjected to sialoadenectomy, while mice in groups 3 (Sham) and 4 (Sham + EGF) underwent a sham procedure. All animals received normal diet and water, except that EGF (100 ng/ml) was added to water for SLX + EGF and Sham + EGF mice. At seven days after surgery, luminal EGF levels in gastrointestinal segment

Roles of temperamental arousal and gender-segregated play in young children's social adjustment.

The hypothesis that gender differences in children's adjustment is partially influenced by differences in temperament and interactions with same-sex peers was examined. Fifty-seven predominantly White, middle-class preschoolers (29 boys and 28 girls, M age = 54.5 months) participated. Measures were taken of children's arousability, problem behaviors, and tendencies to play with same-sex peers. A semester later, children's peer status was assessed. Analyses revealed that arousability and same-sex peer play interacted to predict problem behaviors. For boys high in arousability, play with same-se

Nitric oxide plays a role as a mediator of conjunctival edema in experimental allergic conjunctivitis.

The role of nitric oxide in allergic conjunctivitis was studied in a guinea pig model. The eyes of sensitized guinea pigs were challenged with ovalbumin (20 micrograms per eye) or histamine (20 micrograms per eye). Synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) was inhibited using L-NAME (200 micrograms per eye) or aminoguanidine (200 micrograms per eye). The formation of conjunctival edema was graded and levels of nitrite, a breakdown product of nitric oxide were measured in lavage fluid. Conjunctival vasopermeability was determined by measuring the albumin concentration in the fluid on the surface of the ey

Do KCa channels and carbonic anhydrase play a role in thiazide-induced hyperglycaemia?

Thiazide diuretics are widely used to treat hypertension, but their use is associated with impaired glucose tolerance. We propose that the diabetogenic action of thiazides may be due to their ability to open calcium-activated potassium (KCa) channels in pancreatic beta-cells.
