Sensitivity Assessment of Macroscopic Mechanical Responses of Cemented Sand and Gravel to Mesoscopic Parameters Using an Improved MULTIMOORA Method.

The macroscopic mechanical responses of cemented sand and gravel (CSG) are jointly affected by the mesoscopic properties of the aggregate, mortar matrix, and interfacial transition zone, while different parameters exhibit distinct magnitudes and directions of influence on strength, stiffness, and failure deformation. To establish a unified parameter priority across multiple macroscopic responses, a two-dimensional random aggregate finite element model was developed, and the elastic moduli and tensile strengths of the aggregate, mortar matrix, and interface were selected as six mesoscopic param…

Subtropical marine reserve as key habitats for the critically endangered sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus) in the Southwestern Atlantic.

This study documents the occurrence, seasonal patterns and reproductive activity of the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus) within a no-take marine protected area in southeastern Brazil, using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) and diving records. We recorded the species in the Alcatrazes Archipelago during both summer and winter, including pregnant females and reproductively active, non-pregnant females with fresh mating wounds. These findings enhance understanding of the population dynamics of this critically endangered shark and highlight the ecological and conservation value of marine …

Increasing the compressive strength of a high clay content sandstone reservoir by chemical sand consolidation with minimal permeability reduction.

The integrity of geological formations is critically affected when external forces surpass the rock’s inherent resistance, particularly during oil and gas extraction. Insufficient formation strength to counteract declining flow pressure can result in the migration of sand particles towards the wellbore. The selection of sand control techniques is influenced by a multitude of factors, including well and reservoir conditions, operational methodologies, resource availability, and economic viability. A prevalent chemical strategy for mitigating sand migration in oil reservoirs involves the in-situ…

Pleistocene Legacies in the Contemporary Population Genetic Structure of an Acid-Specialised Crayfish, the Threatened Sand Yabby Cherax robustus.

Following decades of clearing, fragmentation and degradation of coastal heathlands in southeast Queensland, many endemic species are now threatened with extinction, including the vulnerable sand yabby Cherax robustus (Parastacidae), a freshwater crayfish restricted to 200km2 of acidic wetlands. Dramatic fluctuations in the distribution and extent of these wetlands, particularly during the glacial cycles of the Pleistocene, likely shaped the distribution and genetic structure of acid-specialist species, yet their historic and contemporary connectivity remains poorly understood, despite these sp…

Fluorescence spectroscopy analysis of aromatic naphtha surrogates diffusing from bitumen to the aqueous phase of oil sands tailings.

A cheap, reliable, rapid fluorescence spectroscopy method was developed to determine the partitioning of naphtha surrogates, o-xylene and 1-methyl naphthalene (1-MN), from bitumen to the aqueous phase in mature fine tailings (MFT) in oil sand tailing ponds (OSTPs). The method gave reproducible results when volatilization of the surrogates was minimized by using a co-solvent (20 % (vol/vol) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methanol), by reducing sample exposure to open air and by analyzing samples within 6 days of preparation. It was found that the overlap of the fluorescence spect…

Sand Fly Fauna and Prevalence of Leishmania spp. in a Newly Investigated Area of Northern Italy: Emerging Epidemiological Scenarios?

Since the 1990s, cases of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) due to Leishmania infantum have risen in northern Italy due to dog translocation and movement as well as for climate-driven sand fly population growth. In this geographical region, for a long time regarded as non-endemic for CanL, L. infantum is generally transmitted by the sand flies of the genus Phlebotomus. Other sand flies, such as Sergentomyia minuta, have been less investigated, also because they were only considered as vectors of the nonpathogenic herpetophilic Leishmania tarentolae. Our study investigates sand fly species compositio…

Assessing Wolbachia circulation in wild populations of phlebotomine sand flies from Spain and Morocco: implications for control of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases such as leishmaniasis exert a huge burden of morbidity and mortality that are mainly controlled through vector control. The increasing threat of insecticide-resistant vectors entails incorporating more vector control interventions to eliminate these diseases. Introduction of Wolbachia into wild vector populations has been suggested as a potential vector control measure that would require extensive regional knowledge. The aim of this work is to estimate the prevalence of Wolbachia infection and monitor circulating strains in wild sand fly populations from Spain…

Burden of Child Anemia Attributable to Fine Particulate Matters Brought by Sand Dusts in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Addressing environmental factors has recently been recommended to curb the growing trend of anemia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) generated by dust storms were concentrated in place with a high prevalence of anemia. In a multicounty, multicenter study, we analyzed the association between anemia and life-course averaged exposure to dust PM2.5 among children aged <5 years based on 0.65 million records from 47 LMICs. In the fully adjusted mixed effects model, each 10 μg/m3 increase in life-course averaged exposure to dust PM2.5 was associated with a 9

Characterization of bacteria expectorated during forced salivation of the Phlebotomus papatasi: A neglected component of sand fly infectious inoculums.

The infectious inoculum of a sand fly, apart from its metacyclic promastigotes, is composed of factors derived from both the parasite and the vector. Vector-derived factors, including salivary proteins and the gut microbiota, are essential for the establishment and enhancement of infection. However, the type and the number of bacteria egested during salivation is unclear. In the present study, sand flies of Phlebotomus papatasi were gathered from three locations in hyperendemic focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in Isfahan Province, Iran. By using the forced salivation assay and t…

Rodents as vehicle for delivery of transgenic bacteria to make paratransgenic sand fly vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in field condition.

Vector-borne diseases, among them leishmaniasis, cause more than 700,000 deaths annually. The lack of an effective vaccination and the increasing resistance of sand flies to insecticides require the urgent development of innovative approaches to contain the disease. The use of engineered bacteria that express anti-parasite molecules (paratransgenesis) shows much promise. However, a challenge for implementation of this strategy is to devise means to introduce modified bacteria into sand flies in the field. In this study, we use rodent food bait as a delivery strategy to introduce two mCherry-fl…

Detection of Leishmania donovani in Wild-Caught Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Endemic Focus of Leishmaniasis in Himachal Pradesh, India.

An endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is located in the Sutlej River Valley in Himachal Pradesh (India) in the north-western Himalaya where CL co-exists with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In areas of the Indian subcontinent such as Rajasthan, cutaneous leishmaniasis is transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) and Phlebotomus salehi. In Himachal Pradesh, Phlebotomus longiductus (Parrot) is suspected to be the vector for CL. In the current study, sand flies were collected and tested for Leishmania infection and to confirm the vector species causing CL. Sand flies were collected du…

Assessing public perception of a sand fly biting study on the pathway to a controlled human infection model for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: A controlled human infection model (CHIM) involves deliberate exposure of volunteers to pathogens to assess their response to new therapies at an early stage of development. We show here how we used public involvement to help shape the design of a CHIM to support future testing of candidate vaccines for the neglected tropical disease cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disease transmitted by the bite of infected sand flies in tropical regions. METHODS: We undertook a public involvement (PI) consultation exercise to inform development of a study to test the safety and effectiveness of a san…

Entomological Survey of the Sand Fly Fauna of Kayseri Province: Focus on Visceral and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Central Anatolia, Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: In Turkey, leishmaniasis occurs in two clinical forms: cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). CL has been reported mainly from south-eastern Anatolia and the eastern part of the Mediterranean region, whereas VL is sporadic in almost all geographical regions of Turkey. Both clinical forms of the disease have been recorded in Kayseri province for decades, but no study has been conducted on the sand fly fauna in this area. Therefore, we determine the species composition and population dynamics of sand flies prevalent in Kayseri province and identify possible vect…

Broader Geographical Distribution of Toscana Virus in the Mediterranean Region Suggests the Existence of Larger Varieties of Sand Fly Vectors.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is endemic in the Mediterranean basin, where it is transmitted by sand flies. TOSV can infect humans and cause febrile illness as well as neuroinvasive infections affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems. Although TOSV is a significant human pathogen, it remains neglected and there are consequently many gaps of knowledge. Recent seroepidemiology studies and case reports showed that TOSV's geographic distribution is much wider than was assumed a decade ago. The apparent extension of the TOSV circulation area raises the question of the sandfly species that are ab…

Effects of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate, ferrihydrite coating, ionic strength and pH on the transport of TiO2 nanoparticles in quartz sand.

Evaluating the fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) in the subsurface environment is critical for predicting the potential risks to both of the human health and environmental safety. It is believed that numerous environmental factors conspire to control the transport dynamics of nanoparticles, yet the effects of organic phosphates on nanoparticles transport remain largely unknown. In this work, we quantified the transport process of TiO2 nanoparticle (nTiO2) and their retention patterns in water-saturated sand columns under various myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (IHP) or phosphate (Pi) con…

Separation of oil sands process water organics and inorganics and examination of their acute toxicity using standard in-vitro bioassays.

Oil sands process water (OSPW) contains complex components of inorganics and organics. This is the first study that separated OSPW inorganic and organic fractions and examined their relative acute toxicity when compared with the original whole OSPW using an in-vitro cell-based bio-indicator system. The separation of OSPW inorganic and organic fractions would be conducive to the understanding of the toxic contribution of organic and inorganic fractions as well as the identification and treatment of organic fractions. In this research, we demonstrated that the highest organic fraction extraction…
