Bullous morphea is a rare variant of localized scleroderma characterized by occasional intermittent blisters. Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory disease. The coexistence of morphea and lichen sclerosus has been reported in different sites in the same patient and more rarely in the same lesion. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with an atypical presentation of bullous morphea and some histological features of lichen sclerosus. She presented with a 5-year history of an ulcerated plaque, with a sclerotic and atrophic center and indurated budding margins, localized on the lumbar ba

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights recent advances in our current understanding of several autoimmune disorders that affect adolescents. Systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, and juvenile localized scleroderma stand out among the connective tissue diseases for their multiorgan involvement, significant potential morbidity, and the challenges of chronic treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: A better understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases and new insights into the relationship between the immune dysregulation and clinical features has allowed for the development of no

Twenty-six cases of enophthalmos were reviewed. The causes in order of frequency were: orbital asymmetry (8); trauma (5); orbital metastasis (4); microphthalmos (2); orbital varix (2); maxillary mucocele (2); localized scleroderma (1); absence of sphenoid wing (neurofibromatosis) (1); post irradiation atrophy (1). Only six of the patients (23%) were referred with the diagnosis of enophthalmos, suggesting the sign maybe subtle and is frequently missed or misdiagnosed. The nature of the causes underscore the need for careful and thorough diagnosis. In particular, the therapeutic implications of

En coup de sabre (ECDS) is a rare form of localized scleroderma that typically manifests in children and women. It presents as a fibrous pansclerotic plaque extending in a bandlike distribution on the frontoparietal scalp with surrounding scarring alopecia. Many patients have comorbid central nervous system involvement in addition to the cutaneous findings. En coup de sabre is a rare entity that should be delineated from Parry-Romberg syndrome, as both entities share some common features and may coexist. Corticosteroids remain the treatment of choice, but other modalities such as methotrexate,

The skin is commonly affected in chronic inflammatory disorders and may act as a visual marker for internal or systemic inflammation. Frequent inflammatory skin diseases, like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD), are associated with rheumatic and inflammatory bowel diseases. Metabolic, mental and cardiovascular comorbidity are frequent consequences of chronic inflammation. Further intersections between skin and joints are connective tissue diseases (collagenoses) and can be observed in complex diseases, e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinically, these diseases range from predominant cutan

Disabling pansclerotic morphea (DPM) of childhood is a rare generalized type of localized scleroderma (LS) that is known to follow an aggressive course with pansclerotic lesions leading to severe joint contractures and consequent immobility. Mortality is due to complications of the disease such as bronchopneumonia, sepsis, or gangrene. There is no specific laboratory finding. Treatment protocols are still evolving for this severe recalcitrant disorder. Extracutaneous manifestations are rarely reported in DPM. We present the case of a 7-year-old girl with DPM with severe extracutaneous manifest

Raynaud's phenomenon is a common symptom. More often it is usually an idiopathic and benign condition. But it can be an early manifestation of a connective tissue disease especially scleroderma and primary Sjogren's syndrom. Thus it is necessary to develop reasonable screening model. If the vasomotor symptoms are localized, a diagnosis of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon is highly probable and the main etiology is an arterial disease. Occupational arterial lesions are a particularly aspect of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon. Calcium channel blockers are the reference for the symptomatic treatment

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become an established treatment modality for dermatooncologic conditions like actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease, in situ squamous cell carcinoma and superficial basal cell carcinoma. There is also great promise of PDT for many non-neoplastic dermatological diseases like localized scleroderma, acne vulgaris, granuloma anulare and leishmaniasis. Aesthetic indications like photo-aged skin or sebaceous gland hyperplasia complete the range of applications. Major advantages of PDT are the low level of invasiveness and the excellent cosmetic results. Here, we review th

BACKGROUND: Relaxin is a pregnancy-related hormone that has tissue remodeling and antifibrotic effects. Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is characterized by fibrosis of the skin, vasculature, and internal organs.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy, safety, and dose-response effect of recombinant human relaxin in patients with scleroderma.
DESIGN: Multicenter, parallel-group, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING: Academic referral centers.
PATIENTS: 68 patients who had had stable, diffuse scleroderma (moderate to severe) for less than 5 years.
INTERVENTION: Recombinan

INTRODUCTION: Progressive hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) is a rare entity characterized by severe hemifacial atrophy affecting subcutaneous tissue. Its clinical manifestations are mainly neurological and ocular. The most common ocular finding is enophthalmos with eyelid modifications (ptosis, retraction, atrophy). Neuroretinitis remains a rare symptom in this affection. We report here a new case.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old woman with progressive hemifacial atrophy (Romberg syndrome) is reported. The atrophy had begun 10 years before. At time of presentation, she was suffering fro

We describe a rare case of double-lined frontoparietal scleroderma en coup de sabre. The relationship to the distribution following the lines of Blaschko is discussed. In addition, we present a genetic hypothesis which is based on a mosaic state induced by postzygotic mosaicism. A patient with scleroderma en coup de sabre has a mosaic state for genes which predispose to susceptibility for linear scleroderma.

A patient with both vitiligo and morphea is described. These skin diseases rarely appear concurrently in the same patient, despite the fact that both are thought to an autoimmune etiology. Similar cases that have been reported in the literature are reviewed and discussed.
