OBJECTIVE: Attempts to identify the predictors of change during eating disorders treatment have focused almost exclusively on identifying between-persons factors (i.e., differences between patients). Research on within-person predictors of change (i.e., variations within patients over time) may provide novel and clinically useful information. To illustrate, we test the theory that within patients, self-compassion, self-criticism, shame, and eating disorder symptoms reciprocally influence one another over time.
METHOD: Seventy-eight patients with an eating disorder completed the Self-Compassio

Rumination has been linked with a number of deleterious outcomes, though relatively little is known about self-evaluative and emotion processes by which it develops. The current investigation uses a prospective, longitudinal design and self-report measures to examine the role of contingent self-worth, perfectionism, negative emotion beliefs, and suppression of negative emotion in predicting the development of brooding and reflective forms of rumination among 168 adolescents (98 girls, 79.6% European-American) undergoing the transition to high school (Mage = 13.58). Results of structural equati

Differences in the relative use of global and local information (seeing the forest vs. the trees) may explain why people with social anxiety often do not benefit from corrective feedback, even though they pay close attention to details in social situations. In the current study, participants high (n=43) or low (n=47) in social anxiety symptoms gave a series of brief speeches, and then self-rated their speaking performance on items reflecting global and local performance indicators (self-assessment) and also received standardized performance feedback from an experimenter. Participants then comp

To expose biases in self-perceptions of people high in social anxiety, information is needed on actual and perceived informant reports following social situations. We measured trait social anxiety (SA) in 90 college students arranged in pairs for "getting acquainted" conversations. Half participated in a small-talk task, where they took turns answering superficial questions; half participated in a closeness-generating task, where questions required gradual increases in self-disclosure. Afterward, students rated themselves and their partner on positive and negative attributes and how they think

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to closed mechanisms causes strain injuries to axons that increase in number and severity as injury severity increases. Axons that project up from the brain stem are vulnerable, even in milder concussive injuries, and include axons that participate in key monoaminergic pathways. Although called diffuse axonal injury, the supra-tentorial injury component typically shows an anterior preponderance in humans. As the injury forces increase, cerebral contusions may be superimposed on the axonal strain injuries, and these contusions show an anterior preponderance as w

Alois Alzheimer's first publication describes his patient's inability to be aware of her condition. One hundred years later, whether or not Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients show impaired awareness of their memory deficits is still of debate. This review makes a novel contribution, arguing that the ideal empirical tool to assess this question is the metamemory framework. The fact that the metamemory framework offers models of healthy memory and metamemory function and ready-developed measures mapped onto theoretical constructs, means that it is a useful paradigm to explore the question of memo

OBJECTIVE: Childhood trauma is known to be an important antecedent in those who engage in deliberate self-harm (DSH). We aimed to explore the mediating mechanisms between childhood trauma and subsequent DSH in a sample of women detained in a high secure setting.
METHOD: From a previous incidence study into DSH, we subdivided a group of 50 women as follows: non-harmers (N = 13), infrequent harmers (N = 22) and frequent harmers (N = 15). These three groups were then compared on several measures believed to be associated with DSH.
RESULTS: The frequency of DSH was related to low self-esteem, in

When AIDS is becoming a chronic disease, gay men with multiple loss experiences can easily turn into a forgotten group of widowers. Due to new medical treatment HIV-infected gay men are living longer and also have to deal with loss and surviving. This paper argues in favour of group grief therapy for multiple loss and survival problems, within the scope of peer support in the gay community during the AIDS era. In this group psychotherapy special attention is given to the influence of a low gay self-esteem on the grief process and surviving strategies.

The present paper analyzes the regularities referred to via the concept 'self.' This is important, for cognitive science traditionally models the self as a cognitive mediator between perceptual inputs and behavioral outputs. This leads to the assertion that the self causes action. Recent findings in social psychology indicate this is not the case and, as a consequence, certain cognitive scientists model the self as being epiphenomenal. In contrast, the present paper proposes an alternative approach (i.e., the event-control approach) that is based on recently discovered regularities between per

Self-concept is used to explain emotional disturbance or other behavioural and psychological problems associated with depression. Self-referential processing generally reflects self-concept in different domains. Cortical midline structures, such as the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), are critical for self-referential processing both in healthy controls and depressive patients. However, the role of subregions of the MPFC in self-referential processing in depression remains uncertain. In this study, we aimed to explore the neural basis of self-referential processing in depressive patients and t

BACKGROUND: Nursing studies have separately linked self-perceived digital literacy with self-reported innovative behavior and the clinical practice environment with creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. A related association pattern has been reported among Chinese medical students, but joint evidence from multi-institutional nursing samples remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the measurement structure and examine the three-variable association pattern among self-perceived general digital literacy, creative self-efficacy, and self-reported innovative behavior in nursing students

Researchers are often concerned with common method variance (CMV) in cases where it is believed to bias relationships of predictors with criteria. However, CMV may also bias relationships within sets of predictors; this is cause for concern, given the rising popularity of higher order multidimensional constructs. The authors examined the extent to which CMV inflates interrelationships among indicators of higher order constructs and the relationships of those constructs with criteria. To do so, they examined core self-evaluation, a higher order construct comprising self-esteem, generalized self

The active self, understood as the embodied sense of self arising from goal-directed action and interaction with the environment, is supported by sensorimotor processes including multisensory integration and proprioception. Atypical self-representation in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been proposed to relate to differences in these processes. To clarify this relationship, we conducted a systematic conceptual review of 37 empirical studies published between 2010 and August 2025 examining multisensory and bodily components of the active self in ASD. The literature was synthesized across thr

The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is conceptually a continuous construct on a spectrum, rather than a categorical or definitive diagnosis. Therefore, reference to its 'prevalence' in the epidemiological sense may seem to be conceptually incorrect. That said, this does not rule out threshold-based prevalence estimates. There are comparable constructs that are also on a continuum, yet thresholds are used to estimate prevalence. Instances of this include depression (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7), where empirically derived thresholds are used to provide estimates of prevalence. We would also like to emph

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the nature and etiology of shame, a common problem that diminishes the well-being of learners and clinicians in medical education and practice, and to explore the relationship between shame and medical uncertainty.
DISCUSSION: We draw upon various theoretical insights on both shame and uncertainty, and argue that shame is ultimately a product of uncertainty and its transformation by medical learners. We argue that this transformation involves two key processes. The first is a personalization of uncertainty-i.e., a transformation of medical uncertainties focused on clinic

Speech difficulties in children can impair communication, social development, and academic success, often contributing to anxiety. This case report highlights a novel approach combining therapy with hypnosis, patient-recorded videos, and formative physician feedback to improve a child's speech clarity and confidence. In this report, a nine-year-old girl with longstanding articulation difficulties participated in hypnosis sessions and created cooking demonstration videos. These videos served as tools for self-assessment and for receiving targeted physician feedback on speech pacing and clarity.

Despite enthusiasm for mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) for preventing adolescent mental health problems, effects tend to be small. One potential explanation is that some adolescents are not engaging with MBI in ways that maximize benefits. In this study, we sought to understand the time-ordered and interconnected changes in engagement and target intervention processes of emotion regulation difficulties, mindfulness, and self-compassion. In a single-arm trial, n = 73 community adolescents participating in a 6-week, group MBI completed self-report measures of engagement, emotion regulation

BACKGROUND: Weight-related self-stigma and internalised weight bias may intensify food cravings and undermine psychological resources such as self-esteem, yet their combined contribution to food cravings among women with overweight and obesity is not well characterized. This study compared these psychosocial factors between women with overweight and those with obesity and examined their independent associations with food craving.
METHODS: The sample included 179 women with BMI ≥ 25 who completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and validated measures of weight-related self-stigma, internalise

Clinical theory has long characterized personality disorders (PDs) as difficult to treat, reflecting limited insight into impairment, and harmonious with the self-concept. However, recent evidence suggests that PD traits can diminish over time and that individuals higher in PD traits report greater impairment and motivation to change. We proposed the proportionality hypothesis to reconcile these seemingly contradictory perspectives on PDs. This hypothesis suggests that people elevated in PD traits do acknowledge impairment and express motivation to change, but their motivation is reduced relat

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women worldwide. Mastectomy, often accompanied by breast reconstruction, plays a key role in treatment and prevention among high-risk patients; however, psychological outcomes may vary depending on cancer-related factors.
AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between selected cancer-related factors and psychological functioning in women after mastectomy with breast reconstruction.
METHOD AND MATERIAL: This survey-based study involved 164 women after mastectomy with subsequent breast reconstruction. Psychologi
