Enhanced chemiresistive sensing performance of well-defined porous CuO-doped ZnO nanobelts toward VOCs.

Although the post-doping approach as a typical and effective method has been widely employed to improve the gas sensing performance of nanostructured metal oxides, it easily breaks their porous nanostructures. Herein a facile partial cation-exchange strategy combined with thermal oxidation has been developed to prepare porous CuO-doped ZnO nanobelts. Using ZnSe·0.5N2H4 nanobelts as the precursor template, Cu2Se-doped precursor nanobelts were obtained with Zn2+ cations partially exchanged by Cu2+ cations. After annealing in air, they are further oxidized into well-defined porous CuO-doped ZnO n

[Sustaining the team's motivation over the long term].

Within a healthcare organization, leadership fosters individual motivation among team members. To ensure everyone's long-term commitment, it is recommended to create a sustainable work environment that promotes the development of this motivation in line with self-determination theory. Managerial strategies should facilitate the development of autonomy, a sense of competence, and social connection - three fundamental psychological needs of individuals.

RIG-Ing the system to balance immune activation and inflammatory tissue damage in the airways.

Exposed to diverse pathogenic and non-pathogenic insults, the airway epithelium must balance effective host defense while minimizing unnecessary inflammation and tissue damage. In studies of influenza A virus infection including spatial transcriptomics, Nguyen et al. illustrate how tissue-level organization of viral sensing may tune the intensity of innate immune responses.

[Otosclerosis involving the capsule and inner ear. Morphological findings (author's transl)].

The problem of otosclerotic inner ear damage is considered on the basis of morphological findings. It is pointed out that the disease of the otic capsule certainly also affects the underlying sense organ. This arises through disturbance of the perilymphatic electrolytes, venous stasis and thus changes in the circulation, disturbed regulation of endolymph and, more rarely, the direct effect of the focus on the auditory nerve or calcification of the mobile membranes.

Computational modelling of host-guest interactions between a Ni(II) coordination complex and persistent organic pollutants.

Regulatory restrictions and controlled experimental access to numerous hazardous agrochemicals pose a growing challenge to the strategic design of advanced sensing materials for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a well-characterized Ni(II)-based coordination complex, prepared by a slow diffusion process, as a possible sensing platform for the identification of several POPs. Density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, reduced density gradient, and electron localization function analyses were utilized to systematically inve

Synergistic Effect of MOF-Derived Porous In2O3 and High-Entropy Alloy for Enhanced Room-Temperature Ammonia Sensing.

High-performance room-temperature ammonia (NH3) sensors are highly desirable for environmental monitoring and noninvasive chronic kidney disease diagnosis via breath analysis. Structurally advantageous, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived metal oxides combined with low-cost, highly catalytic, nonprecious high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles show great potential for room-temperature gas sensing, yet such composites are rarely explored. Herein, FeCoNiMnCu HEA was rationally coupled with MOF-derived porous In2O3 to fabricate a HEA-modified In2O3 (HEA-IO) composite for room-temperature NH3 sen

Magneto-Optical Surface Plasmon Resonance Multi-Spot Assay for Identification and Quantification of Gaseous Compounds at Room Temperature.

Rapid room-temperature identification of gases and volatile organic compounds remains challenging for compact sensing platforms, particularly when chemically related analytes must be discriminated using accessible sensing materials. In this work, we evaluate whether magneto-optical surface plasmon resonance (MOSPR), combined with multi-spot sensing and conventional SPR readout from the same chip, can provide complementary response features for improved gas/VOC discrimination. The sensing spots are made from accessible chemicals and nanoparticles with plasmonic and magnetic properties. The sens

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the multifaceted inhibitory mechanisms of thymol on the survival and virulence of Vibrio alginolyticus.

Vibrio alginolyticus is a widespread marine pathogen responsible for major disease outbreaks in aquaculture and zoonotic infections in humans. Its pathogenicity is tightly regulated by quorum sensing and driven by biofilm formation, motility, and multiple virulence factors. The organism's high adaptability and virulence complicate traditional antibiotic treatments, especially amid rising antibiotic resistance. Although thymol, a natural monoterpenoid, is known for its broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, its effects on the survival and virulence of V. alginolyticus have not been previously in

Growth mechanism and formaldehyde sensing of mixed phase cobalt oxide nanowalls.

Surface morphology of transition metal oxide (TMO)-based semiconductor nanostructures plays a crucial role in determining their device performance, gas sensing abilities, and catalytic properties. Additionally, chemical stoichiometry of oxide materials significantly influences their structural, electronic, and optical characteristics. In this study, we present the successful fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) porous nanowalls (67 nm thick) of mixed cobalt oxide (CoO + Co3O4) phases using a controlled thermal oxidation process, which are later used for selective formaldehyde sensing. Achieving Simplified and Tunable Flexibility in Carborane-Based Emitters for Quantitative Vapochromic VOC Sensing.

Photoluminescence (PL) sensing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represents a convenient and economic detection method toward air pollutants. However, tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based and recent carborane (Cb)-based sensors retained multiple sites that are responsive to VOC stimulation, making quantitative PL sensing rather challenging. Rendering the simplified and tunable flexibility in the PL sensors is key to achieve the quantitative target. In this work, we proposed a dimeric model of Cb-based emitters to deal with flexibility. Three emissive dibenzothiophene (DBT)-alkynylated carboranes

Nanoparticles Based Sensors for Cyanide Ion Sensing, Basic Principle, Mechanism and Applications.

Rapidly detecting potentially toxic ions such as cyanide is paramount to maintaining a sustainable and environmentally friendly ecosystem for living organisms. In recent years, molecular sensors have been developed to detect cyanide ions, which provide a naked-eye or fluorometric response, making them an ideal choice for cyanide sensing. Nanosensors, on the other hand, have become increasingly popular over the last two decades due water solubility, quick reaction times, environmental friendliness, and straightforward synthesis. Researchers have designed many nanosensors and successfully utiliz

Advancing interfacial properties of carbon cloth via anodic-induced self-assembly of MOFs film integrated with α-MnO2: A sustainable electrocatalyst sensing acetylcholine.

The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable composition, modified structure, and morphologically controlled nanoarchitectures are quite imperative to improve the electrochemical (EC) performances of sensing platforms. Herein, EC control over the fabrication of HKUST-1 (Cu-MOFs) nanocrystals is achieved via anodic-induced electrodeposition approach following the mixing of Cu2+ salt precursor in the vicinity of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC3-) ligands. The problem of controlled mass transfer and slow dispersal of MOFs is resolved by EC deposition of pyramidal-octagonal MOFs on a highly

Lipopolysaccharide recognition, CD14, and lipopolysaccharide receptors.

The ability of a host to sense invasion by a pathogenic organism, and to respond appropriately to control infection, is paramount to survival. To that end, an array of receptors and binding proteins has evolved as part of the innate immune system to detect Gram-negative bacteria. This article reviews the role of CD14, other LPS binding proteins, and the Toll family of receptors in the innate recognition of bacterial lipopolysaccharide.

Conceiving wholeness: women, motherhood, and ovarian transplantation, 1902 and 2004.

Scholars have shown that organ transplantation may transform ideas about one's body, with recipients feeling that they are receiving not just a body part but also a part of the donor's identity. This article focuses on a different way in which organ transplantation shapes recipient identity: the idea of becoming whole. We present the case studies of two women separated by a century (one in 1902 and the other in 2004) who sought ovarian transplantation, and examine how ovarian transplantation can engender a sense of wholeness on the individual, the familial, and the cultural levels, due to its

Seasonal and comparative evidence of adaptive gene expression in mammalian brain size plasticity.

Contrasting almost all other mammalian wintering strategies, Eurasian common shrews, Sorex araneus, endure winter by shrinking their brain, skull, and most organs, only to then regrow to breeding size the following spring. How such tiny mammals achieve this unique brain size plasticity while maintaining activity through the winter remains unknown. To discover potential adaptations underlying this trait, we analyzed seasonal differential gene expression in the shrew hypothalamus, a brain region that both regulates metabolic homeostasis and drastically changes size, and compared hypothalamus gen

Stem Cells and Cell-Free Therapies for Olfactory Epithelium Regeneration: Insights from Experimental Models.

Olfactory impairment is one of the most common diseases of the sense organs, and it is closely related to quality life. Although the molecular mechanism of olfaction was recently brought to light, the pathophysiology and effective treatments for olfactory dysfunction still remain challenging. Olfactory impairment can be caused by the degeneration of olfactory receptor neurons in the nose and also by the degeneration of the olfactory bulb of the olfactory cortex. Several studies have shown that stem cells promote the regeneration of the olfactory neuroepithelium after permanent damage in anosmi…
