The bronchial vascular response to chemoreceptor stimulation was studied in sheep anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, paralyzed with pancuronium, and artificially ventilated with room air. Blood flow through the common bronchial artery was measured with an electromagnetic flow-meter. The clinical, biochemical and pathological effects of the fresh shoots of Chrozophora plicata on Nubian goats and Desert sheep were investigated. The animals were given single or repeated daily doses of 10, 5, 1 and 0.5 g/kg of chrozophora shoots by stomach tube and died at various times post dosing. Concurrent radiographic and electromyographic observations were made in sheep during naturally occurring eructations. The radiographic field extended from the base of the heart to the cranial region of the rumen. Electromyographic recording was from two sites on the caudal thoracic oesophagus within 20-70 mm of the diaphragm. Neutrophils collected from the mammary glands of uninfected sheep or from sheep infected with Taenia hydatigena, attached to and killed T. hydatigena oncospheres in vitro in the presence of serum from infected sheep. A congenital diaphragmatic hernia was created surgically in three sheep fetuses in midgestation. After allowing at least one month for interference with lung development, an in-utero repair was performed three weeks before delivery. The study indicates the potential of intrauterine repair for this defect.

In April and May, 1981, an outbreak of Q fever occurred in a university department which used gravid sheep for fetal respiratory studies. During the subsequent investigation 91 people were studied and 28 were found to have complement-fixing antibodies to the phase II antigen of Coxiella burneti in their serum. The pathognomic, serologic and morphometric identity of a Babesia sp. recently isolated from sheep in Argyllshire was studied. Initially, problems were encountered due to the occurrence of Eperythrozoon ovis as a contaminant of the isolate and treatment with neoarsphenamine failed to remove it. Finally, a combination of oxytetracycline therapy and rapid passage allowed isolation of the Babesia sp. and its preservation in the form of a glycerolized, infected blood stabilate. Certain clinical changes associated with acute oxalate (halogeton) poisoning were determined in sheep given (by stomach tube into the rumen) a lethal dose of Halogeton glomeratus. Plasma concentrations of calcium and calcium ion activity decreased over several hours to such low levels that tetany or coma occurred and death followed. Enzootic calcinosis in Corriedale sheep was characterized by degeneration and mineralization of elastic connective tissue of aorta, arteries, lung, and kidney and by ulceration of cartilage of joints of limbs.
