The data here reported (Table I) show that a toxin is present in the blood of animals with two types of irreversible hypovolemic shock. These data also show that although blood volume therapy does not correct the hypovolemia because of continuing loss of plasma at the site of injury, the major factor in the progressive decline and death is the endotoxemia rather than the hypovolemia. This is also true of severe and prolonged hemorrhagic shock that is irreversible to transfusion. The data also show that even when there is bacterial activity at the site of injury, the pool of endotoxin in the in

BACKGROUND: ABG samples are often obtained in trauma patients to assess shock severity. Venous blood gas (VBG) sampling, which is less invasive, has been widely used to assess other forms of shock. The study aim was to determine the agreement between VBG and ABG measurements in trauma.
METHODS: Patients were enrolled at an Australian trauma centre between October 2016 and October 2018. Bland-Altman limits of agreement (LOA) between paired blood gas samples taken <30 min apart were used to quantify the extent of agreement. The impact of using only VBG measurements was considered using an a pri

AIM: We aimed to evaluate effect of prehospital intravenous (IV) access on mortality in traumatic shock using a large nationwide dataset.
METHODS: We used the Japan Trauma Data Bank to identify adults (≥18 years) with a systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg at the trauma scene and were directly transported to the hospital between 2010 and 2019. We compared patients who had prehospital IV access (IV (+)) or not (IV (-)), using propensity score-matched analysis, and 1:1 nearest-neighbor matching without replacement. Standardized mean difference was used to evaluate the match balance between the two

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and hemorrhagic shock (HS) models, have shown cardiorespiratory depression in ethanol-treated animals. This study investigated the effects of ethanol (ET) on brain lactate concentrations and acidosis in a TBI/HS model.
METHODS: Anesthetized swine were instrumented and subjected to injury (INJ) consisting of fluid percussion TBI of 3 atm with concurrent 30 ml/kg graded hemorrhage over 30 min. Three groups were studied: Sham, INJ and INJ/ET. ET was given preinjury as a 2-g/kg i.v. bolus over 30 min, and an infusion of 0.4 g kg(-1) h(-1

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of 7% NaCl solution (hypertonic saline) in 6% dextran 70 solution (HSD) with that of lactated Ringer's solution (LRS) for treatment of dogs in traumatic shock.
DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, clinical study.
ANIMALS: 16 traumatized adult dogs with clinical signs of shock.
PROCEDURE: Physical, hemodynamic, blood gas, and clinical chemistry measurements were performed prior to treatment. Initial treatment consisted of HSD (n = 8) or LRS (n = 8) administered as a bolus (5 ml/kg of body weight, IV) over a 3-minute period, followed by administration of additio

Effects of naloxone, nalorphine, thyroliberin, morphine and two analogues of enkephalins (FK 33-824 and Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-Phe(NO2)-NH2) on the course of traumatic shock were studied in experiments on rabbits. It was found that antagonists of opioid peptides aggravated the course of traumatic shock and morphine and synthetic analogues of enkephalins exerted positive effects during its treatment. Endogenous opioid peptides are suggested to play the protective role in experimental traumatic shock.

Decreased perfusion of vital organs is secondary to hypovolemic-traumatic shock and may lead to partial ischemia, which in turn causes nucleotide degradation and accumulation of hypoxanthine as well as the formation of xanthinoxidase. Thus, the pre-conditions for the development of detrimental oxygen radicals are set as soon as perfusion is reestablished. This could explain edema formation associated with the reperfusion syndrome, which is observed at least following total ischemia. Whether these reactions are responsible for edema formation secondary to shock, especially in endothelial cells,
