The Evaluation of Foot Rockers on the Kinematic Parameters of Individuals With Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: A variety of shoe modifications have been used to reduce the forces applied on the plantar surface of the foot in those with diabetes. Toe and heel rockers are 2 of the most common types used. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of these shoe modifications on the kinematics of both normal and diabetic individuals. METHOD: Two groups of healthy and diabetic individuals were recruited for this study. The Qualysis motion analysis system was used to record the motions of participants while walking with shoes with toe and a combination of toe and heel rockers (combined). Th…

Evaluation of novel plantar pressure-based 3-dimensional printed accommodative insoles - A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Custom insoles are commonly prescribed to patients with diabetes to redistribute plantar pressure and decrease the risk of ulceration. Advances in 3D printing have enabled the creation of 3D-printed personalized metamaterials whose properties are derived not only from the base material but also the lattice microstructures within the metamaterial. Insoles manufactured using personalized metamaterials have both patient-specific geometry and stiffnesses. However, the safety and biomechanical effect of the novel insoles have not yet been tested clinically. METHODS: Individuals without

Investigation of human body potential measured by a non-contact measuring system.

A human body is occasionally electrified in a room. This charged object will be a source of electrostatic accidents, including the malfunction of electronic equipment. Hence, prevention of these accidents is required. Accidents occasionally occur, even though antistatic clothes and shoes are used. One of the causes for these accidents is that there is a lack of the preventive measures. This situation occurs when using, for example, unconductive wax. In this study, human body potential (voltage) is measured using a non-contact measuring system. An investigation of the human body's voltage when …

Avulsion of the distal tibial shaft in aircraft crashes: a pathological feature of extreme decelerative injury.

A pilot and his passenger were killed on impact with the ground when their light aircraft crashed. Both deaths were caused by extensive injuries involving severe craniocerebral, skeletal, soft tissue, and organ trauma. In both victims, the legs were shortened, with stripping of muscle and soft tissues from the shafts of the lower limb long bones. In addition, fragments of distal tibial shaft had been forced through the soles of the victims' shoes. This sign indicated a fall from height and showed that the direction of the decelerative forces had been along the axis of the legs and that the for…

The effects of fixed and articulated ankle-foot orthoses on gait patterns in subjects with cerebral palsy.

Twenty-one subjects with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were studied to quantify the effects of fixed and articulated ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) on gait and delineate criteria for their use. Children underwent gait analysis under three conditions, fixed AFOs (FAFOs), articulated AFOs (AAFOs), and shoes alone. Greater dorsiflexion occurred at initial contact with both FAFOs and AAFOs than shoes alone. Dorsiflexion at terminal stance was greatest in AAFOs. Plantarflexor power generation at preswing was preserved in AAFOs. No differences were found in knee position during stance. Knee-extensor s…

Enhancing Mobility With Quasi-Passive Variable Stiffness Exoskeletons.

Shoes were invented to provide user comfort using rubber soles, despite marginal improvement in human mobility. Unlike shoes, current lower-limb exoskeletons use fixed stiffness springs to store and recycle energy to improve mobility. However, the maximum kinetic energy a human can accumulate when augmented with a fixed stiffness spring is limited by the maximum deflection and the ability of the limbs to generate force; tying the advantage of fixed stiffness exoskeletons to biological constraints. Here, we propose a method for improving mobility using quasi-passive variable stiffness spring ex…

Foot pressure patterns during gait.

Peak pressure and temporal parameters of foot function were determined in 21 men and 11 women; few differences between men and women in any of the parameters were observed, either when walking barefoot or when wearing shoes. However, significant differences were observed when barefoot and shod walking were compared. The main influence of shoes appears to be in modifying the behaviour of the forefoot, by changing the pressure distribution across the metatarsal heads and increasing the contact times for the toes. The implications of such changes are discussed. Intersubject variability in the pat…

Forefoot Deformity in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Comparison of Shod and Unshod Populations.

UNLABELLED: All reported rheumatoid arthritis (RA) forefoot deformities in the literature thus far have arisen from shoe wearing populations. Our aim in this study was to compare hallucal deformities seen in a shod population with an unshod population. A population comparison was undertaken in 2 specialized foot and ankle units, one in India and one in the United Kingdom. In the shod population, there was 1 hallux varus deformity, 10 without hallucal deformity, and 90 hallux valgus deformities. In contrast, in the unshod population, there were 19 hallux varus deformities and 6 hallux valgus de

The apex angle of the rocker sole affects the posture and gait stability of healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Rocker sole (RS) shoes have been linked to impaired postural control. However, which features of RS design affect balance is unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: Which RS design features affect standing balance and gait stability? METHODS: This study utilized an intervention and cross-over design. Twenty healthy young adults (10 males and 10 females) participated in this study. Standing balance and gait stability were measured using a single force platform and three-dimensional motion analysis system, respectively. The experimental conditions included the control shoe and five RS shoes in…

Surface modification of implants in long bone.

Older adults consume metabolic energy faster than their younger adult counterparts while walking, particularly on sloped terrain. This increased rate is likely in part due to an age-related shift in moment and power production from the ankle joint to the hip. Shifting these mechanics proximally may occur due to older adults losing more mechanical energy at the foot and producing lower ankle joint moments, deficits that are exaggerated when walking uphill or against impeding forces. A promising method to target some of these foot and ankle mechanics differences is increasing footwear longitudin

Evidence of rapid gender processing revealed by ERSP.

In this research, we used EEG signals to analyze gender processing with the ERSP method. Not only facial images, but also images of clothing and shoes, were used. We applied the ICA method to obtain a gender-related component which appeared quite significant in the majority of electrode sites for the occipital lobe. This showed differences of energy between the two genders, even for the clothing and shoe images. Our results indicate that not only facial gender processing, but also a gender discrimination task for objects influences the energy of EEGs from 50 ms after the onset of stimuli at al…
