Fractures of the coracoid process - pathoanatomy and classification: based on thirty nine cases with three dimensional computerised tomography reconstructions.

PURPOSE: Until now, classifications of coracoid fractures have been based on plain radiographs, without use of 3D CT reconstructions. Therefore, the aim of the present study has been to describe the pathoanatomy of these fractures and their associated injuries to the shoulder girdle, on the basis of 3D CT reconstructions. METHODS: The cohort comprised 39 patients, who each sustained a coracoid fracture investigated with 3D CT reconstructions. The patients were assessed in terms of age, gender, pathoanatomy of the coracoid fracture, fractures of other parts of the scapula, and associated injur

Relationship between humeral retroversion and baseball positions during elementary and junior-high school.

BACKGROUND: Humeral retroversion is greater in the dominant shoulder than in the nondominant shoulder in baseball players. However, the effect of different baseball positions during childhood on humeral retroversion remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the following: (1) the relationship between humeral retroversion and baseball positions played during elementary and junior-high schools; (2) the association between humeral retroversion and the prevalence of pain during the medical checkup and self-reported history of injuries in the dominant shoulder or elbow. METHODS

Evaluating the effects of arthroscopic Bankart repair and open Latarjet shoulder stabilisation procedures on shoulder joint neuromechanics and function: a single-centre, parallel-arm trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder instability injuries are common in sports involving collisions and overhead movements. Arthroscopic Bankart repair and the open Latarjet are two commonly used surgical stabilisation procedures. There is a lack of knowledge surrounding movement strategies, joint loading and muscle strength after each of these procedures. This study will compare: (1) shoulder joint neuromechanics during activities of daily living and an overhead sporting task; (2) shoulder range of motion; (3) shoulder strength; and (4) self-reported shoulder function and health status, between individuals

Common and Less Well-known Upper-limb Injuries in Elite Tennis Players.

A recent increase in epidemiology studies on injuries in elite tennis players has helped to shed light on the types of injuries these athletes sustain. This article reviews the common upper-limb injuries in elite players and includes less well known, but important, injuries. A search was conducted to identify current relevant studies involving elite tennis players. Injury frequency rates, injuries by regions, and types of injuries together with a list of commonly reported injuries in the upper limb were established. This list was then reviewed and refined by a sports medicine physician who car

Problems of the glenohumeral joint in overhead sports - literature review. Part II - pathology and pathophysiology.

In throwing sports shoulder is exposed to enormous and often repetitive overloads. Some sports (contact sports) are also connected with direct trauma. We are thus dealing with traumatic injuries, overload and degenerative damage. The article discusses the most frequent injuries of the shoulder characteristic for throwing sports. These are mainly disorders of arm rotation, internal impingement, lesion of the labrum (SLAP) and rotator cuff tears (PASTA).

[Prosthesis control by traction instead of myoelectricity in upper arm amputations].

This paper is concerned with the provision of an upper limb prosthesis in the presence of an axillaris nerve paralysis and additional injuries such as clavicular and scapular fractures, dislocation of the shoulder and major psychological changes. Such paralysis and injuries exclude the use of a myoelectric prosthesis. The shoulder muscles were trained to provide traction forces which controlled an MGH-S hand (VIENNATONE).
