Sickness absence among privately employed white-collar workers during the COVID-19 pandemic; a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it several changes, both regarding infection with COVID-19 itself as well as measures to combat the spread of infection, that might have affected sickness absence (SA) patterns. The aim was to explore whether incidence and length of SA changed between 2019, 2020, and 2021, as well as to determine factors associated with SA due to COVID-19 or COVID-like diagnoses among privately employed white-collar workers. METHODS: A cohort of all privately employed white-collar workers in 2018 in Sweden (n = 1 347 778; 47% women) was followed prospectively dur

Work-break interventions for preventing musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders in healthy workers.

RATIONALE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are amongst the leading causes of occupational sick leave worldwide and account for a high share of absenteeism. For example, in the UK in 2021 to 2022, musculoskeletal disorders were estimated to account for around 27% of all work-related illnesses and result in 6.6 million lost working days. Several workplace interventions are available for reducing the high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. We focused on work-breaks as an organisational intervention for primary prevention. This is an update of a Cochrane review first publ…

From outsider to participant: a qualitative study about attaining and retaining work among persons with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: In Norway, the number of people on sick leave and health-related absence from work has increased over the last few years, and mental illness is one of the main contributing factors. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) and the Qualification Program (QP) are two work-oriented measures offered by Norwegian labor and welfare authorities, aimed at increasing labor market participation among people with health-related problems. The aim of this study was to explore which factors people with mental illnesses found helpful for attaining and retaining work, and their experiences with taki…

Process of Work Disability: From Determinants of Sickness Absence Trajectories to Disability Retirement in A Long-Term Follow-Up of Municipal Employees.

Work disability may originate early during work history and involve sickness absences (SA) and eventually permanent disability. We studied this process over 15 years. Questionnaire data collected in 1981 on health, working conditions, and lifestyle of Finnish municipal employees aged 44-58 years (n = 6257) were linked with registers on SA (≥10 workdays), disability pension, and death from the period 1986-1995. Trajectory analysis was used to assess development in SA (days/year) over 5 years (1981-1985). We analyzed determinants of the trajectories with multinomial regression, while trajectory

Intervention characteristics that facilitate return to work after sickness absence: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: In many Western countries, a vast amount of interventions exist that aim to facilitate return to work (RTW) after sickness absence. These interventions are usually focused on specific target populations such as employees with low back pain, stress-related complaints or adjustment disorders. The aim of the present study is to detect and identify characteristics of RTW interventions that generally facilitate return to work (i.e. in multiple target populations and across interventions). This type of knowledge is highly relevant to policy makers and health practitioners who want to d

Poor agreement found between self-report and a public registry on duration of sickness absence.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the agreement between self-report and a public registry regarding the occurrence and duration of sickness absence (SA) in patients with sciatica. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Observational 2-year longitudinal study including 227 patients. Self-report SA data were obtained by postal questionnaires covering recall periods of 3, 6, and 12 months and compared with data from the Norwegian National Sickness Benefit Register. RESULTS: The percent agreement on the occurrence of SA between self-report and registry was above 85% for all three recall periods. The patients overest

[Maternal and fetal morbidity related to delayed antenatal work incapacity].

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is higher maternal fetal morbidity associated to delayed antenatal work incapacity. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A case-control study was carried out, including 220 pregnant workers. They were divided into 110 women who delayed their antenatal work incapacity (cases) and 110 women who took it on time (controls). Sociodemographic and clinical data, which included maternal fetal morbidity, were registered. Results were analyzed by percentage values and arithmetic mean. Differences between groups were evaluated with Student's t test, chi square test, or exact test of Fis

Legitimizing incapacity: discursive choices in Norwegian sickness certificates.

BACKGROUND: In Norway's welfare system, General Practitioners (GPs) issue sickness certificates (SCs) to document patient's inability to wor … common mental health conditions. We focused on certificates issued around week 39 of the patient's sick leave. Using discourse analysis techniques, we examined linguistic features that convey the patient's work capacity and functional limitations. RESULTS: SCs predominantly emphasized incapacity and the necessity of work absence through discursive choices …

The effect of interdisciplinary treatment on sickness absence and disability pension among chronic pain patients on partial disability pension.

Studies evaluating the effects of interdisciplinary treatment (IDT) on sickness absence and disability pension (SA/DP) have yielded contradictory findings. Evidence indicates that positive treatment effects are restricted to patients with a poor SA/DP prognosis. This study therefore analyzed the effect of IDT in working age patients on partial disability pension, which is a group with a particularly poor prognosis. With data from 479 patients on partial disability pension, this register-based cohort study compared the effects of IDT to those of unspecified interventions. We considered two resp

Birth order and sickness absence: Register-based evidence from Finland.

BACKGROUND: In working ages, sickness absence is strongly related to persons' health condition. We studied how birth order was associated with receipt of sickness allowance, distinguishing between mental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. METHODS: A follow-up study based on the entire Finnish population was conducted for sibling groups born 1969-1982, in which each sibling was observed from age 35 years in the period 2004-2018. Focus was on within-family variation in first-time sickness allowance receipt. RESULTS: Results of stratified Cox regressions revealed that each incre

Musculoskeletal pain intensity and risk of long-term sickness absence in the general working population: A prospective cohort study with register follow-up.

Determining predictors of sickness absence could allow for better screening, guidance, and development of preventive efforts aimed at those in increased risk. This study aimed to determine the prospective association between musculoskeletal pain intensity and risk of incident register-based long-term sickness absence in the general working population, as well as to determine the population attributable fraction. Drawing on data from a nation-wide questionnaire survey, this prospective cohort study followed a representative sample of the Danish general working population without recent long-ter

Sickness absence and disability pension among swedish women prior to breast cancer relapse with a special focus on the roles of treatment and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the longitudinal prevalence and the predictors of sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) in breast cancer (BC) women who eventually developed relapse. METHODS: A total of 1293 BC women, who were ages 20-63 years, diagnosed between 1996 and 2011 and by 2016 had all developed relapse, were identified in Swedish registers and were followed from two years before to five years after their primary diagnosis, while they were relapse-free. Annual prevalence of SA and DP was calculated. Logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) for

Interventions Developed with the Intervention Mapping Protocol in Work Disability Prevention: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Purposes Intervention mapping (IM) is a protocol for developing effective behavior change interventions. It has been used for 10 years to develop work disability prevention (WDP) interventions, but it is not known to what extent and with what success. The main objective of this study was to review the effectiveness of these interventions. Secondary objectives were to review their fidelity to the IM protocol, their theoretical frameworks and their content. Methods A search strategy was conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Pascal, Francis, and BDSP. All titles and abstracts were revie

Owner attitudes and self reported behavior towards modified work after occupational injury absence in small enterprises: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Opportunities for modified work after an occupational injury are thought to be limited in small enterprises. This paper explores owner attitudes and self reported behavior towards modified work after injury-absence in small enterprises. METHODS: Twenty-two owners of small construction and metal-processing enterprises were interviewed. RESULTS: Opportunities for modified work were possible in spite of some owners' general objections. Owners found their own solutions here-and-now without help from external stakeholders, and had little knowledge of possibilities for financial or p
