Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can result in skin photoaging, which is primarily characterized by dryness, roughness, pigmentation, and a loss of elasticity. However, the clinical drugs commonly employed to treat photoaged skin often induce adverse effects on the skin. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are water-soluble pigments occurring abundantly in various flowers, fruits, vegetables, and grains and exhibiting a range of biological activities. Studies have demonstrated that ACNs contribute to the repair of photoaged skin due to their diverse biological characteristics and minimal side effec

This study aimed to determine if skin types can be accurately assessed via melanin scores measured with a colormeter, and whether scar characteristics of people with different skin types are different at various stages of healing. Melanin scores of a Cortex DSM Colormeter were validated against the Fitzpatrick skin type questionnaire in healthy volunteers and unaffected skin of burn and scar patients (N = 137) to determine melanin index cut-offs per skin type. Scar quality in children and adults at 3, 6, and 12 months post-burn using DSM Colormeter and the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment

Vitiligo is a disease of cutaneous pigment cells. Recently we reported that one third of patients with vitiligo had destructive lesions in the retinal pigment epithelium and/or the choroid which were visible by ophthalmologic examination. To determine whether abnormalities of the pigment system of the eye and skin are in fact associated, we examined for vitiligo the skin and hair of 107 patients with active uveitis. Thirty-four patients had an infectious or a known cause for their uveitis and none of these had vitiligo. In contrast, six of seventy-three patients (8%) with idiopathic uveitis ha

Brown diseases comprise disorders leading to hyperpigmentation in skin and nails. Melasma is an acquired skin disorder that is characterized by brownish macules that typically occur on the face. Schamberg disease, also known as progressive pigmented purpura, is characterized by brown pigmentation with pepper spots on their edges. We summarize the epidemiology, pathogenesis, histologic features, and treatment choices for additional brown diseases, including melasma, pigmented purpuric dermatoses, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, drug-induced hyperpigmentation, and pigmentations due to system

Amphibian skin is a multifunctional physiological interface involved in cutaneous respiration, water balance, immune defense, pigmentation, and environmental sensing. High-altitude anurans from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP) provide useful models for examining skin-related trait variation under complex environmental conditions. Here, we compared dorsal skin morphology, antioxidant- and pigmentation-related enzyme activities, and skin transcriptomic profiles between two high-altitude anurans, Rana kukunoris and Nanorana pleskei, sampled from lower- and higher-altitude localities. The two spec

Skin color is determined by the melanin pigments that are produced in melanocytes then transferred to surrounding keratinocytes. Despite the growing number of commercial products claiming the pigmentation-regulatory effects, there is still a demand for the development of new materials that are safe and more efficacious. We tried to screen the pigmentation-regulatory materials using a commercially available drugs, and found that nilotinib could induce pigmentation in melanoma cells. When HM3KO melanoma cells were treated with nilotinib, melanin content was increased together with increase of ty

PURPOSE: Minocycline is a commonly used drug in the management of acne and rosacea. Four individual cases of oral minocycline-induced scleral pigmentation are reported in the dermatologic literature. This is the first report in the ophthalmic literature and will add three new cases of probable minocycline-induced scleral pigmentation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on minocycline from the spontaneous reporting systems of the National Registry of Drug-Induced Ocular Side Effects, Food and Drug Administration, World Health Organization, and Lederle Laboratories were reviewed as to minocycline-rela

The kingdom of plants as a "green biofabric" of valuable bioactive molecules has long been used in many ailments. Currently, extracts and pure compounds of plant origin are used to aid in pigmentation skin problems by influencing the process of melanogenesis. Melanin is a very important pigment that protects human skin against ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. It is produced by a complex process called melanogenesis. However, disturbances in the melanogenesis mechanism may increase or decrease the level of melanin and generate essential skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation and hy

Vitiligo is a common skin disease, affecting approximately 0.5% of the general population. It is characterized by milky white macules and patches, which are a psychological burden to many patients. Although this disease has been known for a long time, the etiology is still under debate. Since melanin is a unique light absorbing and ultraviolet filtering pigment, it is generally accepted that its main function resides in the protection of skin cells against the deleterious effect of ultraviolet rays (UVRs). The occurrence of skin cancer in long lasting vitiligo is rare despite multiple evidence

The stratum corneum and epidermal pigmentation have protective roles against ultraviolet radiation. Because vitiligo skin lacks melanocytes and has no potential to produce pigment, some studies suggested that the epidermis in vitiligo skin is thicker than in normal skin. However, only a few studies investigated epidermal thickness changes in vitiligo, and some of these had relatively small sample sizes. Thus, this study aimed to compare epidermal thickness between vitiligo skin and adjacent normal-appearing skin in a large cohort. Photos of hematoxylin and eosin–stained slides of vitiligo skin

BACKGROUND: Pigmented lesions on acral sites are common; clinical differentiation of nevi and early melanoma can be challenging. In these cases, dermoscopy can provide a more accurate diagnosis. Most dermoscopic patterns on acral skin have been described in Asian and European populations, while there are few studies in Latin American populations
OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of pigmented lesions in volar skin and their dermoscopic patterns in a Mexican population. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed in Hispanic patients with the presence of at

Hypomelanotic skin disorders are cutaneous pigmentary disorders characterized by a reduced melanin content in the skin that results in a lightening of the skin. Establishing the correct diagnosis for hypomelanotic skin disorders requires a good history, a detailed physical examination, the use of special lighting techniques, such as Wood's light, and sometimes a biopsy of the abnormally pigmented skin and the normally pigmented skin. This article focuses on the origin, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of acquired hypomelanotic skin disorders. An algorithm for the diagnostic approach to the

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Visible light (VL), and particularly high-energy visible light (HEVL), reaching Earth's surface has emerged as a relevant contributor to skin damage. VL has been implicated in oxidative stress, inflammation, pigmentation disorders, and photoaging, especially in individuals with darker skin phototypes. As conventional sunscreens offer limited protection in the visible spectrum, increasing attention has been directed toward complementary photoprotective strategies, including the use of natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This systematic review

BACKGROUND: Docetaxel-based chemotherapy will remain clinically relevant and many of our patients will continue to receive the drug. In a recent phase 2 study of docetaxel 35 mg/m2 (weekly) in patients with metastatic breast cancer, the incidence of grade 3 cutaneous toxicity is 19%. The skin toxicity observed consists of limb/palmar-plantar erythematous reactions, or fixed-plaque erythrodysesthesia. Case series or reports have reported varied manifestations of skin reactions and include erythema multiforme, nail changes (onycholysis, pigmentation, paronychia), scleroderma, supravenous discolo

The Melanesians of the North Solomons are exposed to intense equatorial sunlight and yet have a very low incidence of skin cancer. This study reveals no proven cases of basal cell carcinoma in these people, and demonstrates the rarity of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma arising in normal pigmented skin. Most, if not all squamous cell carcinomas, arise in skin damaged by tropical ulceration, burns or osteomyelitis. Melanoma arises from the unpigmented skin of the sole of the foot. North Solomon Islanders are very deeply pigmented. Presumably, dense cutaneous melanin in normal undamaged skin

Exposome factors that lead to stressed skin can be defined as any disturbance to homeostasis from environmental (meteorological factors, solar radiation, pollution or tobacco smoke) and/or internal exposure (unhealthy diet, hormonal variations, lack of sleep, psychosocial stress). The clinical and biological impact of chronic exposome effects on skin functions has been extensively reviewed, whereas there is a paucity of information on the impact of short-term acute exposure. Acute stress, which would typically last minutes to hours (and generally no more than a week), provokes a transient but
