BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders including insomnia, movements during sleep, and daytime sleepiness are common but poorly studied in Huntington disease (HD).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the HD sleep-wake phenotype (including abnormal motor activity during sleep) in patients with various HD stages and the length of CAG repeats. Because a mild hypocretin deficiency has been found in the brains of some patients with HD (hereinafter referred to as HD patients), we also tested the HD patients for narcolepsy.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Twenty-five HD patients (including 2 premanifest carriers) underwent clinical

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is seen during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in English bulldogs, but it is absent during non-REM sleep. The SDB during REM sleep is associated with changes in neural drive to the diaphragm (DIA) and to an upper airway dilator, the sternohyoid (SH). In the present study, the EMG activity of the DIA was recorded in unrestrained, naturally sleeping, English bulldogs (n = 6) and in control dogs (n = 5). The EMG of the SH was recorded in five of these bulldogs and in four of the control dogs. The activity of the DIA was similar in the two groups of dogs throughout

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbance is reported to be frequent in epilepsy. The role of comorbidity, which is frequently accompanied by sleep disturbance, has not been investigated. The present study assessed sleep disorders and circadian rhythm in patients with epilepsy, in whom relevant comorbidity was carefully excluded.
METHODS: Two hundred patients with epilepsy (100 generalized, 100 partial), without relevant psychiatric, neurological or internal comorbidity, were compared with 100 matched controls. The questionnaire contained specifically tailored questions to address the association between

Sleep disorders (SD) are more frequent in the elderly population than younger counterparts. The underlying SD has a more severe impact on cardiorespiratory fitness. In elderly population with respiratory disorders, incidence and baneful influence of sleep disorders are extremely high. Insomnia in elderly is very common probably due to age related changes, underlying co morbidities and multiple medications. With aging there is decrease in duration of slow wave sleep and increase in NREM stage 1 and 2 sleep, which increases number of spontaneous arousals. Compared to younger people, elderly indi

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep breathing disorder affecting up to 17% of the middle-aged population. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the primary treatment for patients with OSA, but acceptance and adherence to therapy is suboptimal in specific subgroups particularly those with insomnia or poor sleep quality (40%-80% of patients with OSA). Pressure intolerance, particularly during periods of wakefulness, inhibiting sleep onset or return to sleep, is one reason for poor CPAP adherence. AutoCPAPs continually monitor airflow changes and only increase t

Sleep disturbances are extremely common (40-86%) in children and adolescents, especially those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and are often among the first symptoms identified by parents at a very early stage of their child's development. These abnormalities are among the main parental concerns when having a child with ASD and have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, their parents, and more broadly their siblings. Sleep disorders are essentially abnormalities of the sleep-wake rhythm - primarily sleep onset insomnia or nocturnal awakenings (with difficulty falling ba

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are increasingly recognized in the symptomatology of many neurodegenerative diseases. Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease is a hereditary prion disease featuring cerebellar ataxia, akinetic parkinsonism, pyramidal signs and cognitive decline.
METHODS: We performed a polysomnographic study (PSG) of sleep and body core temperature (BcT degrees ) in two sisters with GSS.
RESULTS: Our study showed protracted nocturnal awakenings, reduced sleep efficiency and brief daytime naps but also qualitatively preserved slow-wave and REM sleep and substantially normal a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), but diagnostic labels alone provide limited guidance for assessment or treatment. This review summarizes recent advances and proposes a diagnosis-informed, phenotype-directed clinical framework.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies reinforce the heterogeneity of sleep disturbance within and across autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disability, and genetic syndromes. Clinically relevant phenotypes include insomnia and circadian dysregulation, sleep-disordered bre

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in patients with tic disorders and Tourette syndrome, with up to 80% of patients experiencing sleep difficulties. Insomnia is notably present, and pediatric patients often experience parasomnias, including sleepwalking and night terrors. Disruptions in circadian rhythms are also reported, with a pronounced evening chronotype. Concurrently, patients may also suffer from sleep-related movement disorders, and tics are reported to often persist during sleep, further contributing to significant sleep fragmentation. The presence of comorbid attention-deficit h

INTRODUCTION: Psychosis is increasingly understood as a disorder of brain systems that are also central to sleep regulation. Indeed, sleep disturbances are both highly prevalent in psychotic disorders and are likely to contribute to the emergence and maintenance of psychotic experiences.
AREAS COVERED: This narrative review, based on a comprehensive search of MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (March 2026), examines the bidirectional relationship between sleep dysfunction and psychosis, the shared biological mechanisms underlying both, the utility of sleep assessment as an e

A 'Direct to Psychology Insomnia' pathway was developed for implementation within a multidisciplinary sleep disorders service in a tertiary hospital in Brisbane, Australia. The project was informed by implementation science principles and methodology to re-design the model of care (MoC). A consensus group workshop using the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) with 12 multidisciplinary staff was undertaken to develop the new MoC. The workshop explored inclusion and exclusion criteria for a Direct to Psychology pathway including patient flow and enablers. The team endorsed a MoC that was acceptable to

Eating disorders (ED) are psychological disorders characterized by dangerous eating behaviours, including protracted fasting and binge eating. Mental disorders comorbidities (e.g., anxiety and depression), as well as sleep difficulties, are common and might interfere with treatment response. This work investigated sleep quality, circadian preferences, and sleep disorders in ED patients compared to healthy controls (HC) and the impact of ED treatment on patients' sleep. A literature search on Pubmed, Web of Science, Medline, and PsychInfo included 27 studies. Random effect analyses were perform

Sleep is important for our survival. Research suggests that getting 'good' sleep is a problem for a proportion of adolescents. The paper advocates for holistic treatment of sleep disorders incorporating expertise from a multidisciplinary team. Much of the assessment and treatment of sleep disorders in adolescents comes from research within adult populations, therefore, there is a need for further research to be completed within the adolescent population to ensure there is a robust evidence base for assessment and treatment of sleep disorders.

Shift work comprises work schedules that extend beyond the typical "nine-to-five" workday, wherein schedules often comprise early work start, compressed work weeks with 12-hour shifts, and night work. According to recent American and European surveys, between 15 and 30% of adult workers are engaged in some type of shift work, with 19% of the European population reportedly working at least 2 hours between 22:00 and 05:00. The 2005 International Classification of Sleep Disorders estimates that a shift work sleep disorder can be found in 2-5% of workers. This disorder is characterized by excessiv

Dopamine receptor agonists (DAs) such as pramipexole/ropinirole are recognized treatments for restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Parkinson's disease (PD). It is well established that these medications can cause impulse control disorders (ICDs) during wakefulness, side effects with serious and potentially life-altering consequences. Impulse control disorders are recurrent difficult-to-resist behaviors that can be harmful to the patient or others around them. Common examples include pathologic gambling and compulsive sexual behaviors, eating, and shopping. We present the case of a patient with RLS

Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) is a promising new technology with increasing use in experimental trials to treat a diverse array of indications such as movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, essential tremor), psychiatric disorders (depression, OCD), chronic pain and epilepsy. In many aDBS trials, a neural biomarker of interest is compared with a predefined threshold and stimulation amplitude is adjusted accordingly. Across indications and implant locations, potential biomarkers are greatly influenced by sleep. Successful chronic embedded adaptive detectors must incorporate a strateg

Sleep and headache are strongly interconnected, this narrative review gives an overview of the current pathophysiological and clinical correlates of sleep in primary headache disorders. Circuits across the brainstem and hypothalamus that are involved in the regulation of sleep and wake overlap with known headache and pain pathways, offering a possible pathophysiological basis for this relationship. Furthermore, growing evidence supports a key role for orexin (hypocretin), with dysregulated signalling and widespread orexin receptor expression in the trigeminocervical complex and trigeminal gang
