Ultrastructure of pheochromocytoma: undescribed morphologic features.

We examined samples of human pheochromocytoma from 11 patients aged 30-70 years including one case of malignant pheochromocytoma with a view to identifying previously unreported ultrastructural details. We identified two types of nuclear inclusions consisting of irregularly shaped singular or multiple granulofibrillar formations with a typical concentric halo, on the one hand, and accumulations of egg-shaped structures consisting of granules and microfilaments, on the other. In some of the tumor cells, membrane-covered inclusions containing parallel laminar elements arranged in a paracrystallin

Glomus tumor of the trachea - Synopsis of histology & methodology of treatment.

Glomus tumors are neoplasms arising from modified smooth muscle cells surrounding arteriovenous anastomosis in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, which are contributing to blood flow regulation and temperature control on the skin surface. Glomus cells are sparse or absent in visceral organs, making extracutaneous presentation of glomus tumors an extremely rare finding. We briefly report histological considerations on glomus tumors of the trachea and sum the multidisciplinary aspects of their staged endoscopic and surgical management using the example of a rare case presentation.

[Primary leiomyosarcoma of the liver].

We report a case of primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma in a 70 years old woman presenting with hepatomegaly, right upper quadrant pain and impairement of general status. A left hemihepatectomy was undertaken revealing a single tumor of 7 cm in diameter in the left hepatic lobe. An immunohistochemycal study was performed indicating the smooth muscle nature of the tumor. The patient died 6 months later without evidence of active tumoral disease. This is the 28th report on primary leiomyosarcoma of the liver in the world literature.

An update on clonality: what smooth muscle cell type makes up the atherosclerotic plaque?

Almost 50 years ago, Earl Benditt and his son John described the clonality of the atherosclerotic plaque. This led Benditt to propose that the atherosclerotic lesion was a smooth muscle neoplasm, similar to the leiomyomata seen in the uterus of most women. Although the observation of clonality has been confirmed many times, interest in the idea that atherosclerosis might be a form of neoplasia waned because of the clinical success of treatments for hyperlipemia and because animal models have made great progress in understanding how lipid accumulates in the plaque and may lead to plaque rupture

[Bilateral renal angiomyolipomas with a thrombus in the inferior caval vein. Rare growth pattern of a benign tumor].

Renal angiomyolipomas are mesenchymal tumors that are composed of fat tissue, smooth muscle cells and vessels. These are benign tumors, but in rare cases they show a more aggressive growth pattern with invasion into the venous system but without revealing any signs of malignancy. We report a new case of bilateral renal angiomyolipomas with a caval thrombus in a 36 year old female patient with tuberous sclerosis, and give a brief review of the related literature.

Leiomyosarcoma of lower urinary tract: Literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the lower urinary tract (LUT) is a rare and aggressive malignancy derived from smooth muscle cells. It most commonly arises in the bladder, is less frequent in the prostate, and exceptionally rare in the urethra. The disease typically affects adults around the sixth decade of life with a slight male predominance. Etiology remains unclear, although previous radiotherapy or exposure to specific chemotherapeutic agents has been implicated. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific and may resemble more prevalent urinary tract diseases, contributing to delaye

Leiomyoma of the Breast: A Report of a Rare Case of a Benign Breast Tumor From the Caribbean.

Leiomyomas are benign mesenchymal stromal tumors of smooth muscle; while these are more traditionally found in the uterus, in rare cases, they can also be found in the breast, particularly in the subareolar region. Clinically and radiographically, these tumors are very similar to fibroadenomas but can be definitively distinguished based on distinctive histopathological features. Surgical management for breast leiomyomas has previously included procedures ranging from lumpectomy to mastectomy; however, resection of the tumor with free margins is the most well-recognized treatment for breast lei

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are mesenchymal neoplasms with immunoreactivity for both melanocytic and smooth muscle marker … dular metastases 3 years after the resection of uterine tumors tentatively diagnosed as epithelioid smooth muscle tumors with uncertain malignant potential. This patient's subsequent pneumothorax necessitated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and examination of her resected lung specimens eventually led to correcting the diagnosis, i.e., to a PEComa harboring tub …

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the larynx: clinicopathologic features and histogenesis.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is extremely rare in the larynx and can mimic a malignant process. We present the case of a 62-year-old male who required tracheotomy due to rapidly progressive stridor. Laryngoscopy showed an exophytic, occlusive tumor located in the right true vocal cord. CT showed an expansive mass measuring 2 x2 x1.3 cm3 and occupying the anterior commissure, with glottic progression to the right true vocal cord. The tumor was completely resected with a CO2 laser via a transoral approach. Histologic examination demonstrated extensive ulceration with the presence of granul

Surgical Strategy of Intravenous Leiomyomatosis with Intracardiac Extension: A Case Report.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis with intracardiac extension is a rare benign tumor originating from uterine smooth muscle. A 50-year-old woman presented with a cardiac mass 3 years after hysterectomy. Imaging revealed a tumor extending from the right internal iliac vein to the right atrium. Complete resection was achieved via a 2-stage surgery. In the 1st stage, median sternotomy and a retroperitoneal approach were performed, and the intracardiac tumor was excised under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with cardiopulmonary bypass. Postoperatively, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist th

Combination of 13-Cis retinoic acid and lovastatin: marked antitumor potential in vivo in a pheochromocytoma allograft model in female athymic nude mice.

Currently, there are no reliably effective therapeutic options for metastatic pheochromocytoma (PCC) and paraganglioma. Moreover, there are no therapies that may prevent the onset or progression of tumors in patients with succinate dehydrogenase type B mutations, which are associated with very aggressive tumors. Therefore, we tested the approved and well-tolerated drugs lovastatin and 13-cis-retinoic acid (13cRA) in vitro in an aggressive PCC mouse cell line, mouse tumor tissue-derived (MTT) cells, and in vivo in a PCC allograft nude mouse model, in therapeutically relevant doses. Renal cell carcinoma with angioleiomyoma-like stroma and clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma: exploring SDHB protein immunohistochemistry and the relationship to tuberous sclerosis complex.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with angioleiomyoma-like stroma appears to be molecularly distinct from clear cell RCC; however, its relationship to clear cell papillary RCC remains debated. Recent studies have found that similar tumors sometimes occur in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), of which 1 study found unexpectedly negative succinate dehydrogenase B (SDHB) immunostaining. We evaluated immunohistochemistry for SDHB in 12 apparently sporadic RCCs with angioleiomyoma-like stroma and correlated with clinical information for stigmata of TSC. Tumors were compared with a group of 16

Giant subungual glomus tumor: clinical, dermoscopy, imagiologic and surgery details.

Glomus tumor is a rare benign vascular hamartoma derived from the modified smooth muscle cells of the glomus body. Paroxysmal pain is the leading symptom. A 78-year-old woman presented at our clinic with a 50-year history of a slow growing painful purple blue tender nodule under the right fourth finger nail. Dermoscopy and magnetic ressonance confirmed the presence of a large subungual tumor and total surgical excision was performed after partial nail plate avulsion. Histologic examination confirmed a glomus tumor. After 1 year of follow-up, the nail grew with normal shape and neither complica

Paraurethral leiomyoma in a postmenopausal woman: first European case.

Leiomyomas are benign tumors extending from smooth muscle cells and only few cases of paraurethral leiomyomas have been described in the literature. They are often seen in the reproductive age and around 50% of the cases are asymptomatic. We describe a 59-year-old woman with a solid mobile tumor below the symphysis revealed at a gynecological examination. Transvaginal ultrasound and MRI confirmed the tumor and excision of the paraurethral tumor was carried out. The histological examination showed a benign paraurethral leiomyoma. The postoperative period was characterized by urethral pain as we

Angiomyolipoma in the knee--a case report.

Extrarenal angiomyolipoma is an uncommon disease and this may be the first report of angiomyolipoma in the knee, mimicking a malignant sarcoma. A 38-year-old man without tuberous sclerosis presented with a history of increased mass in the knee joint. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a CS x CS x CR cm subcutaneous tumor in the knee joint. The tumor was widely excised. Histologically, the tumor was, well circumscribed, and composed of smooth muscle, vascular spaces, connective tissue, and mature fat. There were no signs of recurrence at one year and eight month

Leiomyosarcoma of the small intestine associated with von Recklinghausen's disease: report of a case.

A 54-year-old woman with intestinal multiple smooth muscle tumors including leiomyosarcoma, epithelioid leiomyoma, and leiomyomas in association with von Recklinghausen's disease is reported. Thirteen years after the excision of an intestinal leiomyosarcoma, another leiomyosarcoma arose in a different area of the jejunum and was also completely resected. Although leiomyomas are occasionally recognized in patients with von Recklinghausen's disease and a gastrointestinal neoplasm, there have been no other reports of leiomyosarcomas. Careful observation of the tumor is necessary and, if a rapid i…

Uterine epithelioid leiomyosarcomas with clear cells: reactivity with HMB-45 and the concept of PEComa.

In this study, we investigated HMB-45 expression in epithelioid uterine leiomyosarcomas with clear cell areas. From 12 epithelioid leiomyosa … nated as PEComas; however, it is advisable to designate them as uterine leiomyosarcomas. In uterine smooth muscle tumors, some epithelioid cells most likely undergo clear cell changes and become positive for HMB-45. It would be advisable to perform this stain in all epithelioid smooth muscle tumors of the uterus.

Deep soft-tissue leiomyoma of the forearm mimicking a primary bone tumor of the ulna.

Leiomyomas of the soft tissues are rare in general, and extremely uncommon in the forearm. In general, leiomyomas are benign soft-tissue tumors that occur where smooth muscles are present. We present a case of soft-tissue leiomyoma of the forearm eroding the midshaft of the ulna, with emphasis on radiological diagnosis and histopathological correlation.

68 Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT of Glomus Tumor of the Small Bowel.

A 57-year-old woman had an incidental finding of a hypervascular small bowel lesion on a contrast-enhanced CT scan performed for a suspected renal graft infection. The morphologic features of the lesion were suggestive of a neuroendocrine tumor (NET), but serum chromogranin A and urinary 5-HIAA were negative. 68 Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT showed high SSTR-2 expression in the lesion, suggesting a NET. However, pathologic examination revealed diffuse alpha-smooth muscle actin positivity, consistent with a glomus tumor. This case highlights the utility of PET/CT for in vivo molecular tumor characterizatio
