Fast recognition of social emotions takes the whole brain: interhemispheric cooperation in the absence of cerebral asymmetry.

Hemispheric asymmetry in emotional perception has been traditionally studied for basic emotions and very little is known about laterality for more complex social emotions. Here, we used the "redundant target paradigm" to investigate interhemispheric asymmetry and cooperation for two social emotions in healthy subjects. Facial expressions of flirtatiousness or arrogance were briefly presented either unilaterally in the left (LVF) or right visual field (RVF), or simultaneously to both visual fields (BVF) while participants responded to the target expression (flirtatious or arrogant, counterbalan

The social learning account of trypophobia.

Trypophobia is the condition in which individuals report a range of negative emotions when viewing clusters of small holes. Since the phenomenon was first described in the peer-reviewed literature a decade ago, 49 papers have appeared together with hundreds of news articles. There has also been much discussion on various Internet forums, including medical and health-related websites. In the present article, we examine the degree to which the phenomenon is caused by a form of social learning, specifically, its ubiquitous social media presence. We also examined its prevalence among the broad pop

Social Isolation Among Individuals with Incontinence: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: Urinary and fecal incontinence, as well as the presence of an ostomy, are globally prevalent conditions with substantial implications for individuals' daily lives. Among the psychological consequences, social isolation is a frequently reported experience but remains poorly explored in the existing literature. The aim of this scoping review is to explore how social isolation has been conceptualized and operationalized in research on individuals with incontinence and to synthesize evidence on its antecedents and outcomes. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the Jo

Developmental Brain Injury and Social Determinants of Health: Opportunities to Combine Preclinical Models for Mechanistic Insights into Recovery.

Epidemiological studies show that social determinants of health are among the strongest factors associated with developmental outcomes after prenatal and perinatal brain injuries, even when controlling for the severity of the initial injury. Elevated socioeconomic status and a higher level of parental education correlate with improved neurologic function after premature birth. Conversely, children experiencing early life adversity have worse outcomes after developmental brain injuries. Animal models have provided vital insight into mechanisms perturbed by developmental brain injuries, which ha

On cognitive ecology and the environmental factors that promote Alzheimer disease: lessons from Octodon degus (Rodentia: Octodontidae).

Cognitive ecologist posits that the more efficiently an animal uses information from the biotic and abiotic environment, the more adaptive are its cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, this approach does not test for natural neurodegenerative processes under field or experimental conditions, which may recover animals information processing and decision making and may explain, mechanistically, maladaptive behaviors. Here, we call for integrative approaches to explain the relationship between ultimate and proximate mechanisms behind social behavior. We highlight the importance of using the endemic

[The lateralized effects of the melanostatin analog alaptide in rats raised in isolation and in a community].

Effects of alaptide on self-stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus, rotation behaviour and learning ability were studied in rats growing either in social adaptation or in groups. The effects on self-stimulation were opposite in these rats. Alaptide facilitated the learning process in grouped rats and potentiated the indirect dophamine-mimetic action of amphetamine in isolated rats.

Effects of circumscribed interests on the social behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorders.

This study compared the effects of circumscribed interests (CI) to less preferred (LP) tangible stimuli on the social behaviors of three children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Based on single subject design methodology, the CI experimental sessions resulted in longer durations of target-child initiated social interactions in comparison to LP sessions. In addition, latency of participant's initial social bids to peers was decreased when CI were present. The results suggest that embedding CI into dyadic play situations with typical peers can be used to increase the social behavior childr

Patterns of social participation among older adults with disabilities and the relationship with well-being: A latent class analysis.

AIM: Living with a chronic condition or a disability at older age impacts social participation. Social connections and social activities seem interrelated leading to heterogeneous patterns in social participation. The aim of this study was to identify a typology in social participation among older adults with disabilities, and to relate this typology to their background characteristics and well-being measures. METHODS: A total of 1775 older adults with disabilities or chronic conditions aged 65-97 were sampled from a nationwide panel study in the Netherlands. Social participation was assessed

The observer perspective: biased imagery in social phobia, agoraphobia, and blood/injury phobia.

Clark and Wells' (1995): 'A cognitive model of social phobia'. In Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment (pp. 69-93), R. G. Heimberg, M. R. Liebowitz, D. A. & F. R. Hope (eds.); cognitive model of social phobia proposes that social phobics generate a negative impression of how they appear to others. This impression often occurs in the form of an image from an "observer" perspective in which social phobics can see themselves as if from another person's vantage point. This study investigated the specificity of the observer perspective among patients with social phobia, agoraphobia,

Internet communication: an activity that appeals to shy and socially phobic people?

Shyness (or social anxiety) and social phobia can be viewed as two distinct conditions, and this study investigates whether they are related to use of the Internet generally, and for communication purposes. 362 participants from two schools, a college and a university in the Teesside area in England were asked to complete Mattick and Clarke's (1998) Social Phobia (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety (SIAS) scales and also answer a questionnaire which asked them about their use of the Internet generally and for communication purposes. The findings from these suggested that social anxiety and so

Cognitive mediation of treatment change in social phobia.

Ninety individuals with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) participated in a randomized controlled trial and completed cognitive-behavioral group therapy, exposure group therapy without explicit cognitive interventions, or a wait-list control condition. Both treatments were superior to the wait-list group in reducing social anxiety but did not differ from one another at posttest. Changes in estimated social cost mediated treatment changes in both treatment conditions from pre- to posttest. However, only participants who received cognitive-behavioral therapy showed continued improvement fr

Mental health literacy for social phobia in Ghana: Investigation of gender stereotypes and previous experience for recognition rates and prejudice.

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) research has been of substantial interest internationally. Nevertheless, the interplay between beliefs, attitudes, previous experience with mental disorders, and knowledge of Ghanaians on specific mental disorders remains to be understood. The present study explored the interconnectedness between gender stereotypes, prejudice, previous experience with social phobia, and MHL among the general population in Ghana. METHOD: Six hundred and one Ghanaians were recruited for an online experimental study design using a survey approach for data gathering. Respo

Using simple economic games to assess social orienting and prosocial behavior in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Deficits in socio-emotional reciprocity, in prosocial behavior and in developing social relationships are diagnostic criteria of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), usually assessed by self-report or observation. Simple social experiments developed by behavioral economists allow for quantification of ASD-related social behavior. In this study, we used such experiments to compare social-economic decision-making between ASD adolescents and neurotypical controls. Precisely, we analyzed social orienting and prosocial behavior in 17 adolescents with ASD (Asperger syndrome) and 24 matched neurotypical a

The relationship between social reward behavior and mesolimbic dopamine release.

Deficits in social behavior, such as reduced motivation and social avoidance, are key symptoms in several psychiatric disorders. Distinct modes of reward, such as drug and social, may rely on different dopamine release patterns in the mesolimbic pathway. We investigated the relationship between social reward behaviors and dopamine release elicited by phasic and tonic stimulation patterns in C57BL/6J mice. Cocaine (10 mg/kg, ip) was administered during dopamine recordings to assess drug-evoked dopamine release in relation to social reward behaviors. Social conditioned place preference was used

Post-weaning social isolation increases the incentive value of nicotine-related contexts and decreases the accumulation of ΔFosB in nucleus accumbens in adolescent rats.

Adolescent social conditions profoundly affect vulnerability to drug abuse. Preclinical studies have shown that preventing social interactions during adolescence increases the rewarding effects of drugs like alcohol, cocaine, or amphetamines, however, little data exist regarding the impact of social isolation on nicotine effects. The current study evaluated the effects of differential rearing conditions during adolescence (isolation or group rearing) on (1) conditioned place preference induced by low nicotine doses (0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg) and (2) sensitization to the locomotor effects of nicotine a…

Do some cases of anorexia nervosa reflect underlying autistic-like conditions?

In a sample of 51 teenagers with anorexia nervosa (AN)-which included 24 cases constituting the total population of AN cases born in 1970-several had shown social, communicative and behaviour patterns suggestive of autistic-like conditions as children, long before the onset of AN. One of the three boys in the AN group had Asperger syndrome. Three of the 48 girls had histories suggesting high functioning autism and continued to show many features typical of autism. Two further girls had Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive traits in combination with social interaction problems. Eighteen o
