Intestinal parasitic co-infections associated with Helicobacter pylori among paediatric patients with gastrointestinal illness attending a general hospital in southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent infections or co-infections caused by intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori are quite rampant in paediatrics living in endemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, and if left untreated, can result in severe complications and hence must be addressed to ensure their health and well-being. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic and H. pylori co-infections and associated factors among paediatric patients with gastrointestinal symptoms who attended the Arba Minch General Hospital (AMGH), Arba Minch, southern Ethiopia, from Septemb

Death Cafés for prevention of burnout in intensive care unit employees: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial (STOPTHEBURN).

BACKGROUND: Burnout is an occupational syndrome that leads to mental health problems, job turnover, and patient safety events. Those caring for critically ill patients are especially susceptible due to high patient mortality, long hours, and regular encounters with trauma and ethical issues. Interventions to prevent burnout in this population are needed. Preliminary studies suggest debriefing sessions may reduce burnout. This study aims to assess whether participation in regular debriefing can prevent burnout in intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial will

Mycetoma: a clinical dilemma in resource limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic mutilating disease of the skin and the underlying tissues caused by fungi or bacteria. Although recently included in the list of neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization, strategic control and preventive measures are yet to be outlined. Thus, it continues to pose huge public health threat in many tropical and sub-tropical countries. If not detected and managed early, it results into gruesome deformity of the limbs. Its low report and lack of familiarity may predispose patients to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment initiation. More so in sit

Exploring How People Interact With Dental Misinformation on Social Media: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media has been widely utilized to spread health-related information, which has led to the possibility of spreading medical misinformation. The extent of the issue is unknown, even though policymakers, researchers, and medical professionals agree that health misinformation must be controlled and combated. OBJECTIVE: A cross-sectional study was conducted by the faculty of dentistry at Damascus University. METHODS: This quantitative cross-sectional study used a voluntary questionnaire distributed online in social media groups. Participants were of different ages, genders, and

Young children understand how social connections affect what people know about each other.

An unwritten expectation in our everyday social interactions is that intimate personal information about someone-"insider knowledge"-is usually confined within close relationships. For example, it would be odd, or even unsettling, if a stranger knew about your favorite movie. Such expectations about who knows what about whom constitute a cornerstone of complex social behavior, but much remains unknown about their cognitive underpinnings and developmental origins. Drawing on parental report (Study 1) as well as a novel experimental approach using controlled but naturalistic videochat conversati

Perinatal anxiety and depressive symptoms and perception of child behavior and temperament in early motherhood.

The perinatal period is a vulnerable time for the development of psychopathology, particularly mood and anxiety disorders. In the study of maternal anxiety, important questions remain regarding the association between maternal anxiety symptoms and subsequent child outcomes. This study examined the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms, namely social anxiety, panic, and agoraphobia disorder symptoms during the perinatal period and maternal perception of child behavior, specifically different facets of development and temperament. Participants (N = 104) were recruited during pregna

Sudden unexpected death in infants in the Oxford Record Linkage area: the mother.

Of the 206 cases of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUD) 170 were linked with the maternity information and birth certificates on the Oxford Record Linkage files. Statistically highly significant correlations were demonstrated with low maternal age, high parity, and low social class, the last two associations being more marked among the mothers of infants who died after the 12th week. Each case of SUD was then matched with three control livebirths for maternal age, parity, civil state of mother, social class, year and hospital of delivery, and as closely as possible for area of residence.

What drives horse success at following human-given cues? An investigation of handler familiarity and living conditions.

Cues such as the human pointing gesture, gaze or proximity to an object are widely used in behavioural studies to evaluate animals' abilities to follow human-given cues. Many domestic mammals, such as horses, can follow human cues; however, factors influencing their responses are still unclear. We assessed the performance of 57 horses at a two-way choice task testing their ability to follow cues of either a familiar (N = 28) or an unfamiliar informant (N = 29). We investigated the effects of the length of the relationship between the horse and a familiar person (main caregiver), their social e

A mixed methods approach to assess animal vaccination programmes: The case of rabies control in Bamako, Mali.

In the framework of the research network on integrated control of zoonoses in Africa (ICONZ) a dog rabies mass vaccination campaign was carried out in two communes of Bamako (Mali) in September 2014. A mixed method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative tools, was developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention towards optimization for future scale-up. Actions to control rabies occur on one level in households when individuals take the decision to vaccinate their dogs. However, control also depends on provision of vaccination services and community participation at the in

Information Source-Message Effect on Consumers' Intentions to Adhere to Food Safety Practices When Handling and Preparing Raw Chicken.

Ideal food safety communication provides timely evidence-based information for consumers to protect themselves from foodborne illnesses. We investigated if information sources (experts providing factual information vs. social media influencers (SMIs) providing misinformation), cognitive, affective, and sociodemographic factors influenced participants' intentions to adhere to food safety practices for raw chicken, a high-risk food. In a quasi-experimental, cross-sectional survey, 727 U.S. adults watched videos about raw chicken food safety from an expert, SMI, or a control. Structural model A e

"Fragments that define my shape": a qualitative study of self-identity on social media after an acquired brain injury.

PURPOSE: Self-identity is disrupted when encountering significant life changes such as an acquired brain injury (ABI). Use of social media can facilitate self-expression, providing an opportunity for identity exploration. For people living with other neurological conditions, online self-expression has been described as being beneficial for sense of self, advocacy, and connection. We aimed to learn more about online self-identity after an ABI to inform rehabilitation approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this qualitative study, we interviewed 11 people with ABI and used reflexive thematic anal

Spatiotemporal clustering, social vulnerability and risk of congenital syphilis in northeast Brazil: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the spatial distribution of congenital syphilis (CS) and its association to social vulnerability indexes in northeast Brazil. METHODS: This was an ecological study referring to all cases of CS and CS deaths recorded in the northeast region of Brazil from 2008 to 2015. Data were obtained from three Brazilian information systems. We examined statistical correlations between CS indicators by state and municipality and their socioeconomic and social vulnerability characteristics. We used Bayesian empirical local models to identify fluctuations of the indicators. Spatial

The Effects of Social Support on Health-Related Quality of Life of Patients with Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

Patients with metastatic prostate cancer (PC) live longer than patients with metastatic tumours of other sites. Consequently, their social network can influence their quality of life (QoL) during a remarkable life span. The aim of this article is to present the findings of a systematic review of the studies that focused on social network supporting the quality of life of these patients. A systematic review for studies meeting specific criteria was undertaken on three databases. Some level of unmet psychological needs was present in 54 % of the patients. Depression and fatigue are highly preval

Building a social media-based HIV risk behavior index to inform the prediction of HIV new diagnosis: a feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Analysis of geolocation-based social media Big Data provides unprecedented opportunities for a broad range of domains including health as health is intrinsically linked to the geographic characteristics of places. HIV infection is largely driven by HIV risk behaviors, such as unsafe sexual behavior and drug abuse/addiction. This study explores the feasibility of building a Social media-based HIV Risk Behavior (SRB) index at the United States county level for informing HIV surveillance and prevention, considering social determinants of health and geographic locations. METHODS: The S

Neural correlates of inhibitory control and functional genetic variation in the dopamine D4 receptor gene.

BACKGROUND: The dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) has been implicated in psychiatric disorders in which deficits of self-regulation are a prominent feature (e.g., attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and substance use disorders) and in dopamine D4 receptor insensitivity within prefrontal regions of the brain. Our hypothesis was that carriers of 7-repeats in the Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR) of DRD4 (7R+) would recruit prefrontal brain regions involved in successful inhibitory control to a lesser degree than non-carriers (7R-) and demonstrate less inhibitory control as confirmed b

Training of goal-directed attention regulation enhances control over neural processing for individuals with brain injury.

Deficits in attention and executive control are some of the most common, debilitating and persistent consequences of brain injuries. Understanding neural mechanisms that support clinically significant improvements, when they do occur, may help advance treatment development. Intervening via rehabilitation provides an opportunity to probe such mechanisms. Our objective was to identify neural mechanisms that underlie improvements in attention and executive control with rehabilitation training. We tested the hypothesis that intensive training enhances modulatory control of neural processing of per
