Social support after TBI: an investigation of Facebook posts in open access support groups.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) significantly affects social interactions and emotional well-being. Following COVID-19, there has been growing interest in how individuals with TBI use online social media groups for support. This study examined engagement patterns in four Facebook support groups: two for TBI and two control groups. A deductive approach was used to categorize 4,133 posts and comments into a framework of support discourse, including seeking and giving support, and non-social support. Each category was further subdivided to analyze post content in more detail. Comments on posts were …

An Examination of the Joint Effect of the Social Environment and Air Pollution on Dementia Among US Older Adults.

UNLABELLED: Evidence suggests exposure to air pollution increases the risk of dementia. Cognitively stimulating activities and social interactions, made available through the social environment, may slow cognitive decline. We examined whether the social environment buffers the adverse effect of air pollution on dementia in a cohort of older adults. METHODS: This study draws from the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory Study. Participants aged 75 years and older were enrolled between 2000 and 2002 and evaluated for dementia semi-annually through 2008. Long-term exposure to particulate matter and nitro…

Infants' early understanding of interactions enables the acquisition of institutional roles.

Infants demonstrate a number of early-emerging sophisticated communicative and linguistic skills that allow them to infer situational constraints, interpret instrumental and communicative interactions, attribute goals to others, recognize group membership, and construct higher-level, abstract distinctions through language. Here, I argue that the understanding of institutional roles develops gradually from these uniquely human cognitive capacities, rather than as an independent skill.

Relational models are too elaborate for basic social relationship reasoning.

Thomas proposes that infants use relational models to reason about interactions between relationship partners. However, many basic social interactions do not contain enough information to differentiate between models. We propose that both basic interaction reasoning and the formation of diverse, culturally relevant relationship categories are better accounted for by positing relationship features that can be flexibly combined.

Integration of a Social Robot in a Pedagogical and Logopedic Intervention with Children: A Case Study.

The effectiveness of social robots such as NAO in pedagogical therapies presents a challenge. There is abundant literature focused on therapies using robots with children with autism, but there is a gap to be filled in other educational different needs. This paper describes an experience of using a NAO as an assistant in a logopedic and pedagogical therapy with children with different needs. Even if the initial robot architecture is based on genericbehaviors, the loading and execution time for each specific requirement and the needs of each child in therapy, made it necessary to develop "Adapt

Parasocial Engagement With Social Media Influencers and Mental Health Outcomes: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social media influencers occupy a pervasive role in billions of users' daily digital lives, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Audiences develop parasocial engagement with these figures, including parasocial relationships (PSRs) and parasocial interactions (PSIs). Despite growing concern about their mental health implications, no prior meta-analysis has quantitatively synthesized this evidence. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the associations between influencer-directed parasocial engagement and mental health outcomes, examine pr…

Changes in social reward across adolescence in male mice.

In humans, adolescence is a time of dynamic behavioral and emotional changes, including a transient decrease in affect associated with being among family members. It is not clear if a similar change occurs in rodent species used to model human psychiatric disorders. Here, we investigated the developmental profile of the rewarding value of interactions with siblings across adolescence in male mice, using the social conditioned place preference task. We found that the reward value of social interactions followed a similar course to that in humans: high in early adolescence, it decreased in mid-a…

A 45-year follow-up study of adolescent schizophrenia. Part I: Premorbid values of psychological and relational indicators in the context of illness course and long-term social functioning of patients.

OBJECTIVES: Research on predictors of adolescent schizophrenia, especially those based on long-term follow-up studies, is rare in the literature. In our analysis, we examine the relationship between the premorbid functioning of the respondents and clinical and social indicators of the illness course. METHODS: 69 patients at the average age of 16 years (time point 0), hospitalized due to schizophrenia (retrospectively re-diagnosed according to ICD-10 criteria) and re-examined 5 years later (time point 1 - personal examination of 41 individuals), were re-evaluated for clinical and social parame

Real-World Social Reward Processes are Linked to Momentary Positive Affect in Adolescent Girls.

Positive peer interactions are critical for adolescent development and well-being. Showing little interest in interacting socially with peers and/or extracting little reward from positive peer interactions can be markers of social anhedonia, which impacts many youths, especially girls, with social anxiety and depressive disorders. Reduced interest or reward in peer interactions may contribute to social anxiety and depression in girls through effects on positive affect (PA), though associations between social anhedonia and momentary PA have yet to be tested. The present study used ecological mo

Social Cognitive Moderators of the Relationship Between Social Anxiety and Alcohol Outcomes in Young People.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety has been linked to problem drinking in young people. Identifying moderators of this relationship will aid the development of effective interventions for this at-risk group. This cross-sectional study examined whether anticipated social outcomes and controlled drinking self-efficacy moderated the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol outcomes. METHOD: A total of 385 participants (drinkers and nondrinkers; mean age = 20.98, SD = 2.35; 65% female; 81% born in Australia), completed an online survey measuring alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harms, social an

Impact of hearing aid use on depression and quality of life in older patients with age-related hearing loss: A focus on social relationships.

Hearing loss is a sensory deficit prevalent in older adults. In South Korea, over 40 % of individuals aged 60 and older reportedly experience unilateral or bilateral hearing loss. An association between perceived social support and satisfaction with hearing aid use has been reported. Although most previous studies focused on the direct effects of hearing aid use, its impact on social relationships remains poorly explored. We analyzed data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging between 2006 and 2022 for those aged 65 years or above. Outcome measures in this study were depressive symptoms a

Interpersonal consequences of social anxiety.

The behavioral manifestations of social anxiety may have implications for social outcomes. Unfortunately, little is known about how anxiety shapes social interaction. The present study examined social interactions in dyads consisting of either 2 nonsocially anxious (NSA) individuals or 1 socially anxious (SA) and 1 NSA individual. Behavior, self-reported affect, and perceptions were examined. In comparison with the interactions of NSA pairs, high levels of fidgeting, poor reciprocity of smiling behavior, more self-talk, and more frequent reassurance seeking and giving characterized interaction…

Stress Among Older Adults With an Incarcerated Family Member: Testing the Buffering Model of Social Support.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether levels of social support moderate the association between age and stress among a sample of individuals who have a family member incarcerated. METHODS: Survey responses from individuals who are members of a nonprofit organization for individuals with a family member incarcerated in Texas were used (n = 376). Ordinary least squares regression analysis was conducted to assess the interaction between age and levels of social support on stress. RESULTS: Findings demonstrated a negative interaction between social support and age (b = -0.040, p = .027), i

Considering the context: social factors in responses to drugs in humans.

BACKGROUND: Drugs are typically used in social settings. Here, we consider two factors that may contribute to this observation: (i) the pres … s, in turn, enhance these drugs' effects. In contrast, opioids and cannabis have subtler effects on social interactions and their effects are less influenced by the presence of others. Overall, there is stronger evidence that drugs enhance positive social contexts than that they dampen the negativity of unpleasant social settings. Controlled research is needed to un …

Popularity at first sight: Dominant behaviours mediate the link between extraversion and popularity in face-to-face and virtual group interactions.

Although there is robust evidence that being more extraverted is related to higher popularity, only few studies have examined which actual behaviours (e.g., verbal content, body language) might explain this association. The current study examined whether observer-rated dominant behaviours (nonverbal, paraverbal, verbal, and general cues) mediate the relationship between self-rated extraversion and its facets (assertiveness, sociability, and activity) and other-rated popularity in zero-acquaintance settings. In two studies, we analysed data from face-to-face (Study 1, N = 124) and virtual (Stud

Fear of positive evaluation and social affiliation in social anxiety disorder and major depression.

Fear of positive evaluation (FPE) is posited as a core feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD); however, little is known about its role in interpersonal functioning. We examined relationships between FPE and responses to a standardized social affiliation paradigm designed to facilitate positive social connection with an unacquainted conversation partner (trained confederate). The sample included adults with SAD (N = 52), major depressive disorder (MDD; N = 23), comorbid SAD and MDD (N = 36), and non-psychiatric controls (N = 33). Participants completed measures assessing FPE, affect, safety b
