Illness acceptance and community self-efficacy mediate the relationship between social isolation and loneliness among elderly people with parkinson's disease.

In this study, we investigated the status quo of illness acceptance, community self-efficacy, and social isolation in elderly patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). We explored the effects of illness acceptance and community self-efficacy on the relationship between social isolation and loneliness in patients with PD based on the self-regulation theory model. We selected elderly patients with PD from the outpatient department of two Grade iii-A hospitals in Guangdong Province using convenience sampling. We collected data using a general information questionnaire. We used the Lubben Social Net

Social support and resilience in persons with severe haemophilia: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Haemophilia is a hereditary haemorrhagic disorder characterized by deficiency or dysfunction of coagulation factors. Recurrent joint and muscle bleeds lead to progressive musculoskeletal damage. Haemophilia affects patients physically but also socially and psychologically. Traumatic experiences, chronic stress and illnesses can lead to mental disorders, but many persons with haemophilia maintain a highly positive outlook. AIM: To explore qualitatively which coping mechanisms persons with haemophilia use and in what way they help them to live with their diagnosis. METHODS: We re

Two cities, two stages in transforming society-a mixed methods study comparing doctors' adoption of mobile apps for communication with patients in Hangzhou and Yancheng, China.

OBJECTIVES: Mobile apps have become commonplace in doctor-patient communication over the last 20 years. Doctors mainly use two kinds of app, social networking apps (i.e., WeChat) and medical platform apps (i.e., Haodf). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the attributes of social interaction in local society impact doctors' choice of mobile apps to communicate with patients. This article addresses two research questions: (a) To what degree do doctors' adoption patterns in different societies differ? (b) Why do doctors choose certain mobile apps to communicate with patients? M

Problematic social media use, mental health, and substance use in Czech adolescents: the comparative role of extracurricular activities - findings from the 2022 HBSC study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic social media use (PSMU) has become a critical public health concern. However, little is known about how the associations between PSMU, mental health, and substance use differ depending on participation in distinct types of extracurricular activities. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine how the associations between PSMU, mental health, and substance use vary across network models that include different types of extracurricular activities. METHODOLOGY: A representative sample of 14,588 Czech adolescents (50.69% boys, mean age 13.6 ± 1.7 years) was used

Knowing green to invent green: Dose enterprise internal green community facilitate the green innovation transformation of inventors?

Facilitating inventors' green innovation transformation (IGIT) to bolster the green talent reservoir serves as a crucial pathway for enterprises to enhance their internal motivation for green transformation and attain sustainable development. Guided by social network theory, this study innovatively introduces an informal organizational structure-enterprise internal green community (EIGC)-and systematically examines its multifaceted impact on IGIT from a coopetition perspective. Focusing on the decoupling of social and knowledge networks, this study further explores how EIGC influences IGIT by

Love on lockdown: how social network characteristics predict separational concurrency among low income African-American women.

One out of nine African-American men between the ages of 20 and 34 is behind bars, resulting in many African-American women losing their primary romantic partners to incarceration. Research suggests that partner incarceration may contribute to increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); however, factors associated with women's decisions to begin new sexual partnerships following partner incarceration (i.e., separational concurrency) have not been well studied. This study examined the social context relevant to initiating separational concurrency

From Selection to Influence: The Moderating Role of Classroom Norms in the Evolution of Aggression and Victimization in Adolescent Friendship Networks.

Aggression and victimization are well-documented factors influencing adolescent social relationships, yet little is known about how these behaviors interact with friendship networks, particularly in the context of aggression norms. This study explored the relationships between aggression, victimization, and friendship networks, and further examined the moderating role of two types of aggression norms among Chinese adolescents using longitudinal social network analysis. A sample of 879 students (Mage = 12.73 years, SD = 0.43; 42.09% girls) from 16 classes (Mclass size = 54.94, SD = 2.64) was tr…

Genomic surveillance uncovers regional variation in HCV transmission networks among people who use drugs in rural U.S. communities.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a significant public health concern in the United States particularly in rural communities where the opioid epidemic has accelerated transmission among people who use drugs (PWUD)/ Despite, this growing burden the genetic features and transmission patterns of HCV in these settings are poorly understood. This study analyzed 692 HCV antibody-positive specimens collected from rural communities in ten U.S. states. Using amplicon-based deep sequencing and the Global Hepatitis Outbreak and Surveillance Technology (GHOST) platform, transmission networks were reconstruc

Alterations of Brain Functional Architecture Associated with Psychopathic Traits in Male Adolescents with Conduct Disorder.

Psychopathic traits of conduct disorder (CD) have a core callous-unemotional (CU) component and an impulsive-antisocial component. Previous task-driven fMRI studies have suggested that psychopathic traits are associated with dysfunction of several brain areas involved in different cognitive functions (e.g., empathy, reward, and response inhibition etc.), but the relationship between psychopathic traits and intrinsic brain functional architecture has not yet been explored in CD. Using a holistic brain-wide functional connectivity analysis, this study delineated the alterations in brain function

Support factors contributing to successful start-up businesses by young entrepreneurs in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment and restricted work opportunities for youth are enduring social challenges that affect health, well-being, and quality of life, especially in low- to middle-income countries. When considering the advantages associated with work as a determinant of health, unemployment is understood to contribute to occupational injustice. However, self-employment, hailed the solution to youth unemployment, is often necessity-driven, precarious in nature and restricted by the low success rate of business start-ups. OBJECTIVE: Research was undertaken to explore factors perceived to cont

At the edge? HIV stigma and centrality in a community's social network in Namibia.

Social network analysis was used to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS stigmatization, perceived risk, and centrality in the community network (via participation in community groups). The findings from respondents in Keetmanshoop, Namibia (N = 375) showed an interaction between stigma and risk perceptions\hose who perceived higher HIV risk and stronger HIV stigma participated in fewer community groups and participated in groups with members who participated less widely across the network. In contrast, those who perceived higher HIV risk and weaker HIV stigma participated more, and were …

Emergence of criticality in the transportation passenger flow: scaling and renormalization in the Seoul bus system.

Social systems have recently attracted much attention, with attempts to understand social behavior with the aid of statistical mechanics applied to complex systems. Collective properties of such systems emerge from couplings between components, for example, individual persons, transportation nodes such as airports or subway stations, and administrative districts. Among various collective properties, criticality is known as a characteristic property of a complex system, which helps the systems to respond flexibly to external perturbations. This work considers the criticality of the urban transp

The brain network underlying attentional blink predicts symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disease that can markedly impair educational, social, and occupational function throughout life. Behavioral deficits may provide clues to the underlying neurological impairments. Children with ADHD exhibit a larger attentional blink (AB) deficit in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) tasks than typically developing children, so we examined whether brain connectivity in the neural network associated with AB can predict ADHD symptoms and thus serve as potential biomarkers of the underlying neuropathology. We first

Using citation network analysis to enhance scholarship in psychological science: A case study of the human aggression literature.

Researchers cannot keep up with the volume of articles being published each year. In order to develop adequate expertise in a given field of study, students and early career scientists must be strategic in what they decide to read. Here we propose using citation network analysis to characterize the literature topology of a given area. We used the human aggression literature as our example. Our citation network analysis identified 15 research communities on aggression. The five largest communities were: "media and video games", "stress, traits and aggression", "rumination and displaced aggressi
