Health disparity by neighbourhood income.

BACKGROUND: Canadian cities are becoming more segregated by income. As such, investigation is required into the magnitude of health disparity between low-, average- and high-income neighbourhoods in order to quantify the level of health disparity at the scale of an urban city. METHODS: A cross-sectional ecological study design was used to review all hospital discharges, physician visits, medication utilization, public health information and vital statistics for an entire city by neighbourhood income status. Postal code information was used to identify six existing contiguous residential neigh

Bias and bulimia nervosa: how typical are clinic cases?

OBJECTIVE: Since patients being treated for bulimia nervosa constitute only a minority of persons with the disorder, the cases seen in clinics may be subject to sampling bias. The aim of this study was to investigate sampling bias as it affects secondary referrals for bulimia nervosa. METHOD: The personal and family characteristics of a consecutive series of 60 women with secondary referrals for bulimia nervosa (clinic subjects) were compare with those of 83 subjects with bulimia who were recruited directly from the community. Most of the data were collected by interview. RESULTS: The demogr

Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Among American Indians: The Role of Social Determinants of Health.

American Indian populations experience a disproportionately high prevalence of risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This study assessed Alzheimer's disease knowledge across seven domains and identified factors associated with overall and domain-specific Alzheimer's disease knowledge among American Indian adults. Guided by the social determinants of health framework, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of American Indian adults residing in South Dakota. A total of 227 participants completed a self-administered survey questionnaire measuring Alzheimer's disease knowledge

Assessment of Social Vulnerabilities of Care and Prognosis in Adult Ocular Melanomas in the US.

BACKGROUND: Prior works have studied the impact of social determinants on various cancers but there is limited analysis on eye-orbit cancers. Current literature tends to focus on socioeconomic status and race, with sparse analysis of interdisciplinary contributions. We examined social determinants as measured by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), quantifying eye and orbit melanoma disparities across the United States. METHODS: A retrospective review of 15,157 patients diagnosed with eye-orbit cancers in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and En

Mapping the Vulnerability of Older-Adult Neighborhoods: An Ecological Study of New York State.

We examined neighborhood-level demographic, economic, and social characteristics and food and health-services access to gauge the vulnerability of older-adult neighborhoods in New York State (NYS), which is understudied and is significant given the rapid aging of populations worldwide. We conducted descriptive ecological analyses using data from the American Community Survey, historical redlining maps, Social Capital Instruments, U.S. Department of Agriculture food access atlas, ESRI businesses, and Social Determinants of Health. We compared census tracts classified as having high and low leve

Comparison of Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) scores with exercise duration and measures of ischaemia during treadmill exercise testing in patients with coronary artery disease.

A cross-sectional study of patients with stable coronary artery disease was performed to compare perceived health status with the results of a treadmill exercise test. One hundred and twenty one patients, mean age 55.07 years, 106 male, who had all suffered a myocardial infarction under the age of 56 years, up to 9 years earlier were studied. Perceived health status was assessed using the Nottingham Health Profile, part 1 of which assesses six dimensions of normal living, and part 2 seven areas of daily life. Nottingham Health Profile scores were higher (worse perceived health status) in patie

Intersectional socioeconomic disparities in continuous smoking through pregnancy among pre-pregnant smokers in Sweden between 2006 and 2016.

BACKGROUND: While well-established associations exist between socioeconomic conditions and smoking during pregnancy (SDP), less is known about social disparities in the risk of continuous SDP. Intersectional analyses that consider multiple social factors simultaneously can offer valuable insight for planning smoking cessation interventions. METHODS: We include all 146,222 pregnancies in Sweden between 2006 and 2016 where the mother smoked at three months before pregnancy. The outcome was continuous SDP defined as self-reported smoking in the third trimester. Exposures were age, education, mig

Equality of opportunity and mortality around the world: implications for global public health.

BACKGROUND: Educational mobility is considered a key driver of population health. While prior studies suggest that intergenerational equality of opportunity may be linked to mortality, most evidence comes from high-income countries. Little is known about whether these associations apply globally. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the relationship between intergenerational educational mobility and all-cause mortality across a global sample of countries. METHODS: We combine country-level data from the WHO Mortality Database and the World Bank's Global Database on Intergenerational Mobility, cover

Severity of gambling problems and psychosocial functioning in older adults.

This study examined the relationship between severity of gambling problems and psychosocial functioning in older adults. Twenty-one current pathological gamblers and 10 current problem gamblers over 60 years of age completed the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), and Social Provisions Scale (SPS). Compared with problem gamblers, pathological gamblers reported increased severity of gambling and family/social problems on the ASI; scored higher on the GDS, BSI, and UCLA-LS; and scored lower on the SPS.

Discovering that the shoe fits: the self-validating role of stereotypes.

Stereotypes can influence social perceptions in many ways. The current research examined a previously unexplored possibility-that activation of a stereotype can validate thoughts about other people when the thoughts are stereotype consistent (i.e., that stereotype activation can increase people's confidence in their previous stereotype-consistent thoughts). Given previous results for other forms of metacognition, this thought validation from stereotype activation should be most likely when people have the cognitive capacity to carefully process individuating information. In two experiments, pa

Twice upon a time: Examining the effect socio-economic status has on the experience of dyslexia in the United Kingdom.

From the mid-1990s, there have been a number of campaigns aimed at raising awareness of dyslexia and social inclusion. In conjunction with these campaigns, educational and employment policies have been implemented that advocate inclusive and workplace adjustments for people with dyslexia. This study aims to explore the intersectional relationship between dyslexia and socio-economic status. The findings analyse adult perceptions of education and employment, which have been shaped by 23 years of social policies promoting anti-discriminatory practice. The study applies a quantitative approach, wh

[Dynamics of geriatric status in older patients under conditions of prolonged hypomobility during the COVID-19 pandemic.].

The COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictive measures introduced during this period had a significant impact on the health status of older adults. In this regard, particular interest is focused on assessing changes in geriatric status, especially the transition from prefrailty to established frailty syndrome under conditions of prolonged physical inactivity and social isolation. The aim of the study was to analyze the dynamics of geriatric status in older patients during prolonged exposure to reduced mobility conditions during lockdown. The study included 525 patients aged 65-74 years residing in
