The social dimension of apathy: evidence for a distinct domain from 11,243 individuals across health and neurocognitive disorders.

Apathy is a highly prevalent and disabling neuropsychiatric syndrome, but its multi-dimensional structure is a challenge for progress towards better identification and treatment. A crucial unresolved question is whether social disengagement reflects a distinct deficit in social motivation or a by-product of diminished initiative or emotional blunting. Previous studies have been constrained by modest sample sizes and limited use of apathy-specific instruments or phenotypically narrow cohorts. Here, we analysed item-level data from 11,243 individuals recruited across multiple centres, including

Personality traits and their effects in patients with hemifacial spasm.

This study aimed to investigate the personality traits of patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS) and their effects on depression, anxiety, social phobia, and quality of life (QoL). This was a prospective cross-sectional study. Fifty patients diagnosed with HFS and 50 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled between June and September 2023. Personality traits were assessed using the Korean version of the 50-item International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) representation of Goldberg markers for the Big-Five factor structure. In terms of personality traits, patients wit

Study on the spatiotemporal distribution of Neolithic settlement clusters based on complex social evolution: Evidence from the Dongting Lake Basin.

Settlement aggregation has been a fundamental feature of human sedentary societies and provides important evidence for understanding changes in prehistoric social organization. However, previous studies of prehistoric settlement clusters have focused predominantly on spatial division and morphological structure, while comparatively little attention has been paid to their long-term spatiotemporal evolution at the watershed scale. This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of Neolithic settlement clusters in the Dongting Lake Basin and its implications for the development of social com

Behavioral outcome of very preterm children at 5 years of age: Prognostic utility of brain tissue volumes at term-equivalent-age, perinatal, and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: Prematurity is associated with a high risk of long-term behavioral problems. This study aimed to assess the prognostic utility of volumetric brain data at term-equivalent-age (TEA), clinical perinatal factors, and parental social economic risk in the prediction of the behavioral outcome at 5 years in a cohort of very preterm infants (VPT, <32 gestational weeks). METHODS: T2-weighted magnetic resonance brain images of 80 VPT children were acquired at TEA and automatically segmented into cortical gray matter, deep subcortical gray matter, white matter (WM), cerebellum (CB), and cereb

Molecular genetic approaches to the study of primate behavior, social organization, and reproduction.

In the past several decades, the development of novel molecular techniques and the advent of noninvasive DNA sampling, coupled with the ease and speed with which molecular analyses can now be performed, have made it possible for primatologists to directly examine the fitness effects of individual behavior and to explore how variation in behavior and social systems influences primate population genetic structure. This review describes the theoretical connections between individual behavior and primate social systems on the one hand and population genetic structure on the other, discusses the ki

Structural threat as a theoretical driver of trans health inequities.

Transgender and nonbinary (trans) people in the United States are increasingly exposed to structural conditions that undermine their safety, belonging, and inclusion. Existing theoretical frameworks focus on how anti-trans stigma and discrimination impact health, but structural drivers of trans health inequities remain undertheorized. This paper introduces Structural Threat to explain how cultural, legal, administrative, and institutional systems destabilize and withdraw social safety and protection for trans communities. Structural threat places trans people in a constant state of uncertainty

Social capital, functional health status and quality of life among adults in rural Southwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of adults is important for attainment of the third sustainable development goal. Both social capital and health are essential for development, hence research is needed to explore this relationship in low income countries. Therefore, this study explored the association(s) between structural social capital, functional health status, and quality of life among adults in rural southwest Nigeria. METHODS: Cross-sectional data was collected from 922 residents of rural communities in three states of southwest Nigeria. Questions on adult health, subjective well-be

Social Isolation and Health Outcomes in Japan: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation is an important social determinant of health, but its relationship with health-related outcomes remains incompletely understood. This study examined whether structural social isolation is associated with subjective health, symptom burden, chronic disease diagnoses, and healthcare-seeking behaviors in a nationwide Japanese population. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using data from the 2024 Japan coronavirus disease 2019 and Society Internet Survey, including adults aged 18-79 years. Social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social N

Neurodevelopmental origins of social competence in very preterm children.

Social problems are an important feature of the preterm behavioral phenotype but are diverse and multidimensional. A model of social competence comprised of the three interrelated components of social cognition, social interaction, and social adjustment is useful in conceptualizing these problems. Weaknesses in social cognition in very preterm (VPT) children, although rarely studied, are found on tasks involving interpretation of social cues. Difficulties in social interaction in VPT infants and young children are documented by structured observations of their interactions with adults. Problem

Illusory social agents within and beyond voices: A computational linguistics analysis of the experience of psychosis.

OBJECTIVES: Psychosis has a strong social component and often involves the experience of being affected by 'illusory social agents'. However, this experience remains under-characterized, particularly for social agents in delusions and non-vocal hallucinations. One useful approach is a form of computational linguistics called corpus linguistics that studies texts to identify patterns of meaning encoded in both the semantics and linguistic structure of the text. METHODS: Twenty people living with psychosis were recruited from community and inpatient services. They participated in open-ended int

Social determinants of chronic kidney disease: from association to clinical and population action.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To synthesize recent evidence on how social determinants -socioeconomic conditions, health system, physical environment, psychosocial factors, life course, structural forces, migration, gender, and population vulnerability - shape the risk, progression, and outcomes of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and to identify clinical and health policy implications. RECENT FINDINGS: The evidence confirms a consistent and cumulative social gradient: simultaneous exposure to low income, lower education, unemployment, housing insecurity, and barriers to healthcare access is associated wit

Engaging Social Stakeholders in National Asbestos Research for Public Health: An Italian Experience.

Background: Asbestos and its impacts on the population worldwide are threats to the environment and public health, striking both countries that have banned asbestos, such as Italy in 1992, and those that continue its use. In Italy, asbestos‑affected communities have experienced diverse progress in their involvement in prevention and asbestos risk management. Objectives: Exploring social stakeholders' engagement in research projects on asbestos health impacts and discussing the benefits of the ongoing SEPRA project (Epidemiological Surveillance, Prevention and Research on Asbestos). Methods: A

Long-Term Social Isolation Reduces Expression of the BDNF Precursor and Prolyl Endopeptidase in the Rat Brain.

Early-life stress is a risk factor for the development of behavioral and cognitive disorders in humans and animals. Such stressful situations include social isolation in early postnatal ontogenesis. Behavioral and cognitive impairments associated with neuroplastic changes in brain structures. We have found that after ten weeks of social isolation, male Wistar rats show behavioral abnormalities and cognitive deficit, accompanied by an increase in the relative expression of gene encoding serine protease prolyl endopeptidase (PREP, EC 3.4.21.26) in the brain frontal cortex. The present study aime

"Over here, it's just drugs, women and all the madness": The HIV risk environment of clients of female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico.

HIV vulnerability depends upon social context. Based on broader debates in social epidemiology, political economy, and sociology of health, Rhodes' (2002) "risk environment" framework provides one heuristic for understanding how contextual features influence HIV risk, through different types of environmental factors (social, economic, policy, and physical) which interact at different levels of influence (micro, macro). Few data are available on the "risk environment" of male clients of female sex workers (FSWs); such men represent a potential "bridge" for transmission of HIV and other sexually

Validation of the Persistent Somatic Symptom Stigma Scale for Healthcare Professionals.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) describe recurrent or continuously occurring symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, or pain that have persisted for at least several months. These include single symptoms such as chronic pain, combinations of symptoms, or functional disorders such as fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome. While many studies have explored stigmatisation by healthcare professionals toward people with PSS, there is a lack of validated measurement instruments. We recently developed a stigma scale, the Persistent Somatic Symptom Stigma scale for Healthcare Professional

How place shapes diarrheal risk: An eco-social analysis of environmental and social infrastructures in riverine Indonesia.

Diarrheal disease remains strongly patterned by environmental and social inequalities in place-based riverine settings, where daily interaction with contaminated water environments shapes exposure risk. Guided by eco-social theory, this study examines how environmental and social infrastructures jointly structure diarrheal vulnerability in riverine communities of Jambi Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey of 463 adult household heads was integrated with river water quality assessment and analyzed using a parsimonious structural equation model to estimate pathways linking social capita

Proposing an identity-in-context framework for culturally responsive evaluation.

Evaluation exists within social, cultural, environmental, and economic contexts defined by human experience. Taking an identity-oriented, culturally responsive approach to evaluation highlights the consequences of evaluation and how they relate to the social reality and context of priority populations. This article presents a conceptual framework for culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) practice using identity as an orienting construct. The Identity-in-Context Framework (ICF) can help evaluators and practitioners be cognizant of cultural implications for practice and explore how identity int
