Soil Correlates and Mortality from Giraffe Skin Disease in Tanzania.

Giraffe skin disease (GSD) is a disorder of undetermined etiology that causes lesions on the forelimbs of Masai giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi) in Tanzania, East Africa. We examined soil correlates of prevalence of GSD from 951 giraffe in 14 sites in Tanzania, and estimated mortality using 3 yr of longitudinal mark-recapture data from 382 giraffe with and without GSD lesions, in Tarangire National Park (TNP). Spatial variation in GSD prevalence was best explained by soil fertility, measured as cation exchange capacity. We found no mortality effect of GSD on adult giraffe in TNP…

Photoautotrophic microorganisms as a carbon source for temperate soil invertebrates.

We tested experimentally if photoautotrophic microorganisms are a carbon source for invertebrates in temperate soils. We exposed forest or arable soils to a (13)CO2-enriched atmosphere and quantified (13)C assimilation by three common animal groups: earthworms (Oligochaeta), springtails (Hexapoda) and slugs (Gastropoda). Endogeic earthworms (Allolobophora chlorotica) and hemiedaphic springtails (Ceratophysella denticulata) were highly (13)C enriched when incubated under light, deriving up to 3.0 and 17.0%, respectively, of their body carbon from the microbial source in 7 days. Earthworms assim…

Interpreting Interactions between Ozone and Residual Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Soil.

We evaluated how gas-phase O3 interacts with residual petroleum hydrocarbons in soil. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were 18 ± 0.6 g/kg soil, and TPH carbon constituted ∼40% of the dichloromethane-extractable carbon (DeOC) in the soil. At the benchmark dose of 3.4 kg O3/kg initial TPH, TPH carbon was reduced by nearly 6 gC/kg soil (40%), which was accompanied by an increase of about 4 gC/kg soil in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and a 4-fold increase in 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). Disrupting gas channeling in the soil improved mass transport of O3 to TPH bound to soil and incre…

Leaching of arsenic, copper and chromium from thermally treated soil.

Thermal treatment, if properly performed, is an effective way of destroying organic compounds in contaminated soil, while impact on co-present inorganic contaminants varies depending on the element. Leaching of trace elements in thermally treated soil can be altered by co-combusting different types of materials. This study aimed at assessing changes in mobility of As, Cr and Cu in thermally treated soil as affected by addition of industrial by-products prior to soil combustion. Contaminated soil was mixed with either waste of gypsum boards, a steel processing residue (Fe3O4), fly ash from wood…

Morphological Alteration and Survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei in Soil Microcosms.

The resilience of Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, was evaluated in control soil microcosms and in soil microcosms containing NaCl or FeSO4 at 30°C. Iron (Fe(II)) promoted the growth of B. pseudomallei during the 30-day observation, contrary to the presence of 1.5% and 3% NaCl. Scanning electron micrographs of B. pseudomallei in soil revealed their morphological alteration from rod to coccoid and the formation of microcolonies. The smallest B. pseudomallei cells were found in soil with 100 μM FeSO4 compared with in the control soil or soil with 0.6% NaCl (P < 0.05…

Spatio-temporal distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, preventive chemotherapy targeting soil-transmitted helminthiasis is being scaled-up. Hence, spatially explicit estimates of infection risks providing information about the current situation are needed to guide interventions. Available high-resolution national model-based estimates either rely on analyses of data restricted to a given period of time, or on historical data collected over a longer period. While efforts have been made to take into account the spatial structure of the data in the modelling approach, little emphasis has been placed on the temporal dimension. …

Viable Legionella pneumophila bacteria in natural soil and rainwater puddles.

AIMS: For the majority of sporadic Legionnaires' disease cases the source of infection remains unknown. Infection may possible result from exposure to Legionella bacteria in sources that are not yet considered in outbreak investigations. Therefore, potential sources of pathogenic Legionella bacteria--natural soil and rainwater puddles on roads--were studied in 2012. METHODS AND RESULTS: Legionella bacteria were detected in 30% (6/20) of soils and 3·9% (3/77) of rainwater puddles by amoebal coculture. Legionella pneumophila was isolated from two out of six Legionella positive soil samples and …

The shared antibiotic resistome of soil bacteria and human pathogens.

Soil microbiota represent one of the ancient evolutionary origins of antibiotic resistance and have been proposed as a reservoir of resistance genes available for exchange with clinical pathogens. Using a high-throughput functional metagenomic approach in conjunction with a pipeline for the de novo assembly of short-read sequence data from functional selections (termed PARFuMS), we provide evidence for recent exchange of antibiotic resistance genes between environmental bacteria and clinical pathogens. We describe multidrug-resistant soil bacteria containing resistance cassettes against five c…

Molecular identification of Coccidioides spp. in soil samples from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Since 1991 several outbreaks of acute coccidioidomycosis (CM) were diagnosed in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil, mainly related to disturbance of armadillo burrows caused by hunters while digging them for the capture of these animals. This activity causes dust contaminated with arthroconidia of Coccidioides posadasii, which, once inhaled, cause the mycosis. We report on the identification of C. posadasii in soil samples related to outbreaks of CM. RESULTS: Twenty four soil samples had their DNA extracted and subsequently submitted to a semi-nested PCR technique using specific pr…

Chromium speciation in mildly heated Cr(VI)-doped latosol soil.

Cr(VI) chemical reduction in natural organic matter (NOM)-bearing latosol soil was investigated under various heating conditions at < or = 378 K. An enhanced Cr(VI) reduction rate has been observed for the reaction at 353-378 K. The effect of Fe(II) naturally occurring in the latosol soil on Cr(VI) chemical reduction is negligible compared with the effect of NOM. Cr(OH)(3) was quantitatively specified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy to be the key chromium species ( approximately 80%) after approximately 90% of Cr(VI) was chemically reduced by NOM at 353-378 K. This study indicates a potential…

Malignant cells facilitate lung metastasis by bringing their own soil.

Metastatic cancer cells (seeds) preferentially grow in the secondary sites with a permissive microenvironment (soil). We show that the metastatic cells can bring their own soil--stromal components including activated fibroblasts--from the primary site to the lungs. By analyzing the efferent blood from tumors, we found that viability of circulating metastatic cancer cells is higher if they are incorporated in heterotypic tumor-stroma cell fragments. Moreover, we show that these cotraveling stromal cells provide an early growth advantage to the accompanying metastatic cancer cells in the lungs. …

Burkholderia pseudomallei is spatially distributed in soil in northeast Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is a frequently fatal infectious disease caused by the soil dwelling Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Environmental sampling is important to identify geographical distribution of the organism and related risk of infection to humans and livestock. The aim of this study was to evaluate spatial distribution of B. pseudomallei in soil and consider the implications of this for soil sampling strategies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A fixed-interval sampling strategy was used as the basis for detection and quantitation by culture of B. pseudomallei in soil in two e…

Soil physicochemical properties related to the presence of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The incidence of Burkholderia pseudomallei in the soil from north-east Thailand is estimated to be 20-fold higher than that from central Thailand, and is associated with a 10-fold higher incidence of melioidosis in the region than in central Thailand. This study investigated the presence of B. pseudomallei in relation to the physicochemical properties of soil from Khon Kaen province, north-east Thailand. Thirteen districts (54.2%) were positive for B. pseudomallei. From a selected district, B. pseudomallei was cultured from 19 of 50 sites (38%). The soil in this area was predominantly sandy. F…

Enhanced soil flushing of phenanthrene by anionic-nonionic mixed surfactant.

Laboratory column experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of anionic-nonionic mixed surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with Triton X-100 (TX100), in enhancing phenanthrene flushing for contaminated soil in an aim to improve the efficiency of surfactant remediation technology. The experimental results showed that the sorption of TX100 onto soil was severely restricted in the presence of SDS in batch and column experiments and decreased with the increasing mass fraction of SDS in mixed surfactant solutions; meanwhile the enhanced solubilization of phenanthrene by SDS-TX10…

An unceasing problem: soil-transmitted helminthiases in rural Malaysian communities.

Despite great development in socioeconomic status throughout 50 years of independence, Malaysia is still plagued with soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH). STH continue to have a significant impact on public health particularly in rural communities. In order to determine the prevalence of STH among rural Orang Asli children and to investigate the possible risk factors affecting the pattern of this prevalence, fecal samples were collected from 292 Orang Asli primary schoolchildren (145 males and 147 females) age 7-12 years, from Pos Betau, Kuala Lipis, Pahang. The samples were examined by Kato-…

Physical and biochemical interactions of soil fungi with asbestos fibers.

Iron, a structural component of most asbestos, is thought to play a crucial role in asbestos toxicity. Surface iron favors fiber uptake by mammalian cells and promotes the generation of free radicals with consequent DNA and lipid damage. In some cases, chemical removal of iron from asbestos fibers has reduced several cellular responses to asbestos. Since iron represents an essential element for soil microorganisms, many of them have developed mechanisms to scavenge this element from poorly soluble forms. We have investigated the ability of some soil fungi to produce iron chelators capable of e…
