Hearing outcomes following microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm.

PURPOSE: Facial nerve microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS) provides relief to most patients. Due to the proximity of the cochlear and facial nerves, hearing loss is a potential MVD complication, however, there is a wide range in the reported incidence of hearing loss (HL) in the literature. In order to better understand the HL incidence in our MVD population, we utilized the combination of speech discrimination scores (SDS) and air and bone pure tone threshold averages (PTA) to identify patients with no hearing change, sensorineural hearing loss, or conductive hearing l

Acoustic Features of Sustained Phonation for Schizophrenia Classification: A Feasibility Study.

Voice and speech are increasingly studied as indicators of mental health, but the acoustic features of sustained phonation in schizophrenia remain underexplored. This feasibility study examined whether a 500 ms sustained vowel /a/ contains meaningful information for distinguishing patients with schizophrenia from healthy controls. Recordings from 84 participants (41 patients, 43 controls) were analyzed using features from eight acoustic domains. Random Forest, XGBoost, and logistic regression were evaluated under four train-test configurations with data augmentation and participant-grouped cro

Maternal voice contingency affects tactile habituation in full-term newborns.

Multisensory interactions are central to early development, yet their influence on newborns' tactile processing remains unclear. In particular, it is unknown whether auditory input interferes with or modulates tactile habituation, and how this depends on voice familiarity and temporal contingency. This study investigated these questions in 96 full-term newborns using a manual habituation-discrimination paradigm across four auditory conditions: silence, recorded stranger voice, recorded maternal voice, and live maternal voice contingent on the infant's object-holding behavior. Infants explored

Smartphone-Based Multimodal Digital Biomarker Integration for Parkinson's Disease Screening and Diagnostic Support.

INTRODUCTION: Timely identification of Parkinson's disease (PD) is often delayed because of clinical heterogeneity and limited awareness of early symptoms. Digital biomarkers obtained via smartphones offer scalable screening potential. However, unimodal assessments may lack sufficient sensitivity or specificity given the multidimensional nature of PD. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a smartphone-based, multimodal digital biomarker framework for PD screening and diagnostic support. METHODS: The study progressed through two phases: an initial version [n = 368; 233 PD, 135 heal

Audiologic findings in patients with a point mutation at nucleotide 3,243 of mitochondrial DNA.

A mitochondrial tRNALeu(UUR) mutation at nucleotide 3,243 is known to be found in most patients with MELAS (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and strokelike episodes) and has also been identified in several families with maternally inherited diabetes mellitus and hearing loss. We report here audiologic features in patients with hearing loss associated with the mutation. Four patients without and five with MELAS were studied. Most of the patients had bilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss. The most common shape of the audiogram was sloping, while cases in the ad

Inner Ear Active Hearing Device in Non-Otosclerotic, Severe, Mixed Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the efficacy of a powerful active hearing device in a patient different from far-advanced otosclerosis, specifically when the stapes footplate is mobile. PATIENT: A patient with severe-to-profound mixed hearing loss, who was not benefiting from the use of a conventional hearing aid, was selected for an inner ear active implant. This was justified by a bone conductive threshold above 60 dB, which had discouraged any other rehabilitative solutions such as a bone conductive implant, or an active middle ear implant (AMEI). INTERVENTION: The hearing device was surgically appl
