Speech pathology telepractice for children with cleft palate in the times of COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether providing Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) interventions by telepractice (TP) could effectively improve speech performance in children with cleft palate (CCP). METHODS: Forty-three CCP were treated with TP intervention in 45 min sessions, 2 times per week for a period of one month. Children ages ranged 4-12 years (X = 7.04; SD = 2.59). All children presented with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and compensatory articulation (CA) after palatal repair. TP was provided in small groups (5-6 children) following the principles of the Whole Language Model (WLM). Sev

Each Child Matters: Contributing Factors to Speech-Language Pathologists' Perceptions of Stuttering Therapy.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often report feeling less confident treating children who stutter. Yet, prior research has focused on SLPs' perceptions of groups, rather than an individual child who stutters. The aim of this study was to assess SLPs' perceptions of the therapy they provide to an individual child who stutters and to identify key factors underlying these perceptions. METHOD: A total of 115 SLPs rated their general experience, knowledge, and confidence related to stuttering treatment and rated how well they perceived therapy to be going for an individual child who s

A Survey of Clinicians With Specialization in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose Little is known about how clinicians develop expertise in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), a rare speech disorder with heterogeneous presentation. The purpose of this survey study was to examine the beliefs and practices of clinicians specializing in CAS. Method Speech-language pathologists who self-identify as having expertise in CAS (n = 165) completed an online survey regarding influences on clinical practice and beliefs about CAS. Practice patterns and perspectives regarding CAS were analyzed for respondents who self-identify as having expertise in CAS, across 4 experience bands

A nationwide survey of nonspeech oral motor exercise use: implications for evidence-based practice.

PURPOSE: A nationwide survey was conducted to determine if speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs) to address children's speech sound problems. For those SLPs who used NSOMEs, the survey also identified (a) the types of NSOMEs used by the SLPs, (b) the SLPs' underlying beliefs about why they use NSOMEs, (c) clinicians' training for these exercises, (d) the application of NSOMEs across various clinical populations, and (e) specific tasks/procedures/tools that are used for intervention. METHOD: A total of 2,000 surveys were mailed to a randomly selected s

An Internet-based telerehabilitation system for the assessment of motor speech disorders: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: This pilot study explored the feasibility and effectiveness of an Internet-based telerehabilitation application for the assessment of motor speech disorders in adults with acquired neurological impairment. METHOD: Using a counterbalanced, repeated measures research design, 2 speech-language pathologists assessed 19 speakers with dysarthria on a battery of perceptual assessments. The assessments included a 19-item version of the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA; P. Enderby, 1983), the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech (K. M. Yorkston & D. R. Beukelman, 1981), perce

Cognition and anatomy in three variants of primary progressive aphasia.

We performed a comprehensive cognitive, neuroimaging, and genetic study of 31 patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), a decline in language functions that remains isolated for at least 2 years. Detailed speech and language evaluation was used to identify three different clinical variants: nonfluent progressive aphasia (NFPA; n = 11), semantic dementia (SD; n = 10), and a third variant termed logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA; n = 10). Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) on MRIs showed that, when all 31 PPA patients were analyzed together, the left perisylvian region and the anterior tempor

Beyond Nodules-Diagnostic and Treatment Options in Pediatric Voice Disorders.

Pediatric dysphonia is common; however, not all vocal fold pathology in children is due to nodules. Laryngeal stroboscopy (transoral or transnasal) often is essential for the diagnosis of other not-nodule lesions. As in adults, multidisciplinary care with a speech language pathologist helps with patient buy-in for therapy. Breathy dysphonia due to glottic incompetence may be related to vocal fold movement impairment (VFMI) or posterior glottic insufficiency. There are several medialization procedures available for children with VFMI due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

Management of voice disorders.

Voice disorders are commonly seen in general medical practice. In some cases voice disorders represent the presenting symptom for serious underlying disease. It is important for clinicians from internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice to be able to identify those factors in the history or observed vocal symptoms which suggest need for referral for comprehensive voice evaluation as well as to understand the distinct but complementary roles of the specific disciplines (otolaryngology and speech-language pathology) involved in diagnosis and treatment of patients with voice disorders.

Atypical progressive supranuclear palsy underlying progressive apraxia of speech and nonfluent aphasia.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a clinicopathological entity typically presenting as an akinetic rigid syndrome with early falls, axial rigidity, vertical supranuclear gaze palsy and levodopa resistance. Pathological features consist of tau deposition in neuronal and glial cells located mainly in subcortical and brainstem structures. Rare cases with the pathological diagnosis of atypical PSP have been described in which neocortical tau deposition is more widespread than what is usually seen in typical PSP. Progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA) is a syndrome characterized by spontaneous

Comparative Effects of High-Tech Visual Scene Displays and Low-Tech Isolated Picture Symbols on Engagement From Students With Multiple Disabilities.

Purpose Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an intervention approach that can promote communication and language in children with multiple disabilities who are beginning communicators. While a wide range of AAC technologies are available, little is known about the comparative effects of specific technology options. Given that engagement can be low for beginning communicators with multiple disabilities, the current study provides initial information about the comparative effects of 2 AAC technology options-high-tech visual scene displays (VSDs) and low-tech isolated picture symb

Compassionately reactive: Personality profiles of speech-language pathologists and their professional trajectories.

Personality traits significantly influence health career trajectories, clinical performance, and burnout vulnerability. However, limited research has explored personality traits among speech-language pathologists (SLP), particularly across professional development stages. This study compared certified SLPs, Communication Disorders students, and a comparison group from the general population, examining differences in personality dimensions and the relationship between clinical experience and personality among SLPs. A total of 359 participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, assessing N

Dysphagia education in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: student self-competency ratings during their dysphagia course.

PURPOSE: Training programs focused on dysphagia have been identified as an area needing improvement due to the specialized skills required to provide clinical care to patients with dysphagia. Globally, a lack of standardized training has been recognized and has led to the introduction of competency and training frameworks in the clinical practice of dysphagia. Previous studies have explored the experiences of students in training programs and their self-perceived competency; however, none have explored this in the Ethiopian context due to the infancy of the Speech Language Therapy (SLT) profes

Subtypes of progressive aphasia: application of the International Consensus Criteria and validation using β-amyloid imaging.

Primary progressive aphasia comprises a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative conditions with diverse clinical profiles and underlying pathological substrates. A major development has been the publication of the recent International Consensus Criteria for the three major variants namely: semantic, non-fluent/agrammatic and logopenic. The logopenic variant is assumed to represent an atypical presentation of Alzheimer pathology although evidence for this is, at present, limited. The semantic and non-fluent/agrammatic variants are largely associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration with
